View Full Version : VMK deletes the park or vice versa
Doodle Duck 05-21-2007, 07:40 PM As you all probably know by now you have till June 3rd (next moon tree) to get over the in park Quests.
Personally I never got anything above an IQ of 15 (on ive) manning the booth so no big deal to me...I always knew far more than they did...I must have hit break times...anyway, do you think it's really about the CM shortage and not reasons given??
Would hate fot the Mouse to lose interest (yeah, I know they say they are not). It is the best game on the net and really ingenious in every way. YES I'll pay for it. It's so much better than the games that are charged for it's amazing.
Just curious as to thoughts on the loss of the 'booth'.
Shinku 05-21-2007, 08:28 PM I think its pretty sad, actually. In-park quests were pretty fun.
Tinkermommy 05-22-2007, 08:59 AM What?
How did I miss this?
Tinkermommy 05-22-2007, 09:41 AM Just went to the VMK newsletter and answered that question myself.
I am curious, however -- is anybody else disappointed (or to be honest, bugged) that they're getting rid of the quests at Disneyland, but keeping them at Walt Disney World?

To be honest, I'm too far away to do either so it doesn't make much difference to me, though I have done the DL ones ages ago, but it does seem strange keeping them in one and not the other...
I just heard about the removal this morning and I'm still raging mad, sickly furious and totally confused.
I can't even speak about it without cursing!
The "explanation" given in the newsletter is no explanation at all in my opinion.
Got to try to cool off and maybe join this discussion when and if that ever happens.
Vegitabeta 05-22-2007, 12:06 PM I just read the update, it doesn't really explain why does it?
Tinkermommy 05-22-2007, 12:25 PM I'm really trying to understand what could be behind the decision to pull it from Disneyland but keep it at WDW. I think if they'd just eliminated it completely, I'd be sad, but I wouldn't be as bugged by it.
I also wish they had given more notice. We were just there Saturday AND Sunday, and I would have liked to have gotten a picture of my daughter with the booth for our scrapbook. I wish I'd known then it was going away.
I know it sounds silly, but my little one and I have some wonderful VMK memories from Disneyland. We've been playing almost since the beginning. Our characters were born at the park, and we've done all of the quests. If we're alone, we go inside Innoventions and play VMK. We did this for at least an hour last weekend. If we get new codes, we go straight inside to enter them rather than waiting until we go home. We've even met people who helped us there, including a wonderful player who helped us finish quests that we were stuck on because of the fireworks game. There have been days when we didn't go on a single ride, but we did play VMK at the park.
When it was offered, we "earned" tickets to the VMK Insider Tour at Disneyland, and a friend and I took our kids to Disneyland on the last day of summer break two years ago to take the tour. We were the first ones to sign up that morning. But when we showed up in the afternoon, they'd cancelled our tour. On our next visit, they said it was no longer offered -- even though our tickets hadn't expired. In fact, I still have the ticket sitting on my desk -- worthless as it turned out to be, LOL.
Although that experience was very frustrating (and a HUGE disappointment for the kids), the rest of our VMK park experiences have been great. We loved doing the quests and earning the unique rewards. Last weekend, I spent $84 on pirate pins to try to get my daughter the "Mickey's Reward" pin and VMK code that had so far evaded her. (With success; she finally got it.)
I can't tell you how many times we've stopped by the VMK booth to see if anything new is going on and chatting with the CMs there, if they weren't busy. Just a few weeks ago, we had a delightful encounter with another mother and daughter who were doing the same thing. Because there was nothing we hadn't done and nobody in line, the CM asked the four of us Disney trivia questions, and gave each of us a VMK card good for 100 credits if we got the answer right. We had SO much fun with him! I asked him a trivia question that I'd just learned that morning, and managed to stump him. None of us had ever met before that day, but we had a wonderful, fun time together. It's a great memory!
I've also had many pleasant conversations with CMs who man the VMK terminals inside Innoventions. I remember spending a lot of time with a CM who had not yet seen the Peter Pan and Alice rides right after they came out. We were the only ones playing, so I had my characters go through the rides so he could see the rooms.
VMK has become a huge part of our park experience, and I guarantee you my daughter is going to be VERY sad.
I know things have to change, and I'm not going to lay flowers in front of the booth. But I would like to hear a good explanation for why they're taking it out of Disneyland while leaving it in Orlando.
tinker3 05-22-2007, 12:28 PM Not Good! I am not sure how to break the news to my boys. We won't be to DLR till November so there is no way to get in one last quest.
Very disappointing! Yes, tinkermommy it does bug me that DLR won't have a booth but Disney World will. I always thought the majority of the VMK players were West Coast. It really doesn't make a lot of sense. :crying: :(
Vegitabeta 05-22-2007, 12:28 PM Do you think that there's more demand for it in WDW maybe?

It's possible, but there is almost always a line at the VMK booth in Disneyland on weekends.

Sorry for monopolizing this thread, but here's another thought...for some time, VMK advertised the Mickey furniture they would be giving away for in-park quests at Disneyland. The first item was supposed to be the Mickey window, which was adorable, and we could hardly wait for it to come out.
When the new quests finally came out, they'd substituted the television instead. (It's great, and I had/have no complaint about the change.) They said they'd been late getting it out, decided to do the tv first, and that they'd release one card each season. I figured we'd get the window later. Apparently that's now not going to happen.
It's like the tour I mentioned in my earlier post -- they hold something out, then take it away without explanation. I even had tickets in my hand! I'm a grown-up; I can deal with it. (Not well, but I can deal. :p ) But that leaves us to explain it to the kids. I know they have to learn to expect disappointment in life, but c'mon, not from Disney, and not on an annual basis.
Yes, it's a free game, but it's Disney. (And I'd happily pay for the game, just like I pay for ToonTown.) We're not talking about giving away cars -- we're talking about little laminated cards with codes for stuff that doesn't even exist in the real world.
Tinker3, I remember that it was VMK that got you and I talking in the first place, and how excited your boys were about the quests. I'm so sorry that they're not going to be able to do any more at Disneyland.
I'm trying to think of who I know with APs who might be able to get to the park in the next week and who would be willing to turn in the quests if I give them the answers. I'm hoping the kids I "know" (even if only virtually) can at least get a tv card before the quests go away.:(
PinokeFan 05-22-2007, 01:54 PM As an AP holder, I was absolutely sickened by this announcement. The VMK quests and specials are fuel for my frequent visits to the Park. So this morning I called Disneyland.
I had a heartfelt conversation with a wonderfully sympathetic Cast Member (who was very familiar with VMK, btw). I was told the "official reason" they were given as to why the Kiosk was closing and the Quests were ending was because there wasn't enough "guest interest" to financially support their continued operation.
I expressed my honest doubt that this was the real reason, as -- based upon my own anecdotal experience -- the VMK Quest Kiosk at DL was always well-attended by guests, as opposed to VMK Central in WDW (which was virtually empty the couple times I went there). The CM agreed, saying that had been their own impression, too.
I speculated that perhaps the opening of the new Finding Nemo Subs had a part in this decision for some unknown reason. (For those of you who don't know, the VMK Kiosk is located within spitting distance of the Nemo entrance.) Because the Kiosk closing is happening so suddenly -- and is occuring immediately before the Nemo Subs open -- I wondered about a possible connection between these two events.
The CM didn't know of a connection, but agreed with my contention that -- if more "guest interest" in VMK is really required -- what better way to accomplish this than to have the VMK Kiosk open right next to the hottest ride of the summer??? The Kiosk has been sitting in front of Innoventions without the benefit of a huge amount of foot traffic for a long time. It makes no sense to shut it down when it will suddenly be in a high-profile position. If, that is, the Powers-That-Be truly wanted more "guest interest."
I told the CM that this whole thing was being handled abysmally: The suddenness of it; the fact that we weren't being given real, logical reasons; etc. I also said that it sent out a negative message to us Disneyland fans. VMK was created for the 50th, after all. So why should our Park (which is Walt's Park) be treated in this way?
Finally, I told the CM that there were a lot of people online who were upset at this development. The CM said that they had already received A LOT of calls about it -- far more than were expected, apparently -- and encouraged me to tell my friends to CALL AND MAKE YOUR FEELINGS KNOWN!!! I was assured that all comments and responses would be compiled and forwarded to the appropriate parties.
The number is (714) 781-7290. You know what to do.
Doodle Duck 05-24-2007, 08:23 AM Sorry to have broken that news and made folks sad. :-(
I still think it's the CM shortage at DL (and not at WDW). They need bodies to man/woman things that make money. Just my thought.
IO'm glad to hear that there were CM's at the booth that knew the game. Lke I said I must have hit it at break time. :-)
Maybe some phone calls will add pressure but probably not but I'll place one anyway.
Regarding in park quests, interesting that the SoCal passes are no good this weekend and this past Monday the Red Space suit was made not tradeable. What's that about? Little virtual 'things' are treated like real goods to the point of being silly about it. Oh well. Still a GREAT game.
Mr.Abominable 05-26-2007, 01:38 AM I am saddened by this as well. It seems to me that this may be a move toward offering codes with purchased items. The VMK pirate pins have been selling very well. I think we may see a lot more of this type of thing in the future as VMK seeks to become a financially successful part of the Disney Parks.
