HB Tigger Fan 06-15-2002, 08:02 PM If we use drumsticks to play drums, what do we use breadsticks to play? If shelled peanuts are w/o shells, why aren't they called unshelled peanuts? Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? Why are there toll booths on freeways? Morrigoon 06-15-2002, 08:05 PM Why is it a shipment when it goes by car, and cargo when it goes by ship? Nigel2 06-15-2002, 09:59 PM Fine, go the silly route... If you kill a loner in the woods, bury his body in a deep unmarked grave with a large amount of lye and.... oh wait nevermind. Ok, why are teachers not as revered here as in other places?:) Morrigoon 06-16-2002, 02:41 AM Sheer numbers. We need so many of them, that our schools cannot afford to pay them what they're worth. Status in America hangs a great deal upon the salary recieved for the work done. Since teachers are underpaid, they are also undervalued. Also, our cynical nature as a culture encourages questioning authority. An idea, ironically, which is promoted in our schools. Teachers are the first authority (beyond parents) that our kids encounter, so they constantly question and challenge authority, leading to a general lack of respect for the party in question (the teacher). Then we grow up and realize how valuable and important our teachers are, but our subconscious has already been trained to disrespect. Just a theory ;) HTHBellcaptain 06-16-2002, 07:20 PM From The Little Surrealist Dictionary Dog: A dog is not a hammock. Before electronics what real utilitarian use did it have?:) SoCalSnowWhite 06-17-2002, 08:48 PM Your life should never surround around another person, you're missing out on so many other things!! HB Tigger Fan 06-24-2002, 06:47 AM ATM Machine = Automatic Teller Machine Machine. baileykat 06-24-2002, 08:47 AM Speaking of ATM's....why do the drive up ATM's have braile on them....hmmm HTHBellcaptain 06-24-2002, 08:25 PM Or an even deep thought on that same point, Why do the drive up ATMs have braile on the buttons? HB Tigger Fan 06-24-2002, 08:31 PM The answer applies to both the above questions. ATM machines have braille on them so a person who is blind can use the ATM machine w/ only minimal assistance, ie...reading the screen. The person can enter their code themselves, and do what they need to do. The buttons are on the drive up machines because blind people do ride in cars, and need to be able to access an ATM machine from a car from time to time. Yes, this is all true. I had a friend in HS who was blind, and asked her one day and that is what she told me. Thanks Heather. :crying: MickeyD 06-24-2002, 09:11 PM My understanding is that they use the same machines for walk up and drive up. It's easier to manufacture one machine for walk up and drive up than to manufacture two separate machines, one for walk up with braille on it, and one without braile for drive up. I think it would be awkward for a blind person to have to lean across the driver and out the window to use the drive up ATM, or to specifically sit in the back seat to use the drive up ATM, but, hey, that's just me. Anyway, my random thought: I saw this bumper sticker on a Cal Trans truck today that made me laugh. "Next time wave at me with ALL your fingers." HB Tigger Fan 06-25-2002, 08:19 AM Mickey D Said: I think it would be awkward for a blind person to have to lean across the driver and out the window to use the It is very awarkard, but the option has to be there. Often times the blind person would be in the back seat if they were to use a drive-up ATM. |
