I finally received my free Vista Express upgrade that I was able to get because of my recent purchase of a Toshiba Laptop. I have heard conflicting reports about the operating system.

My daughter says don't use it. A friend says the same thing. However, I see all the magazines praising it.

Has anyone had experience with Vista? If so, what do you think? Am I taking too big a risk if I upload it to my laptop?

Thanks for any assistance.

Do you have your original startup disks for your laptop with winxp on them? If so, copy anything you couldn't bear to lose onto like a portable hard drive and try vista. That way, even if it sucks and you lose "everything" it's already saved somewhere else. Or, if you hate vista, you can uninstall it and go back to winXP on your startup disks.

Then again, that's just me. I won't switch operating systems until SP2.

I've been using Vista on two different systems for a couple months now. I like it very much and have had no significant problems with it.

My suggestion would be to do a little research and find out if there are any important software packages or peripherals that you use that are incompatible with it. If not, then it is worth at least giving it a try. Make a backup of your system before installing it, which would give you the option to fairly easy go back if you end up disliking it or having serious problems.

I have yet to use to Vista myself. I've read in numerous articles it runs well, but runs much better with a few tweaks. The tweaks are safe; just disabling services you don't use or telling the OS not to start services you run infrequently.

I'm sure you can find a lot of info with a Google search or two on Vista tweaks.

I think people are a bit paranoid when it comes to new Microsoft operating systems. My philosophy is, if you're really that concerned about security, worms and viruses, run Linux or Solaris 10 for PC.

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista running on it and haven't had any problems with it yet.

I agree with JeffG. Make sure the software and peripherals you want to use are Vista compatible or have a patch or driver which will make it run on Vista BEFORE you install.

May Heaven have mercy on your soul.

And have you considered Linux instead?
