Just saw on the news that a trainer was hurt while trying to inseminate a whale. The whale hit the trainer with it's tail and knocked them down off a 3 foot wall. I couldn't find a link right away. Anyways, glad we didn't go to SeaWorld today as planned. We will be there tomorrow!

Did they say which Sea World it was?

Sea World San Diego - the gal was just giving the whale a routine medical exam - no insemination.

You know, I can't really blame the whale... :D

Hmmm, well, it doesn't say why Orkid (what a nice name ;) ) bumped the wall, whether it was intentional or by accident, and if intentional, if there's another reason why she might have done that or if she seemed to be purposely trying to hurt the trainer. I'm impressed that they actually said which whale it was and not just "Shamu" like they usually do. If I had to guess, I would have thought it was Kasatka again, though Orkid can be pretty spunky herself. Of course, the biggest news to me from the article is that they're considering inseminating Orkid - they must think she's matured enough and learned enough from Kasatka to be a good mother herself.

(I know, no one cares about this but me.)

emilousmom, the title of your post is "another accident at Seaworld" and I was just wondering if you could explain why you say this. I am a little behind on my knowledge of Seaworld current events, so I have no idea how many accidents there have been, and how recently, but have their really been that many? Just curious, no offense intended in any way.:)

I care, too! In fact, I heard about this last night on a teaser for an upcoming news report, and immediately started trying to find out what happened.

I agree. It was nice to not have to hunt through reports to try to find out which whale it was. I'm looking forward to the planned press conference, and I hope they'll have some more good information for us then.

And I really hope they don't have to keep the trainers out of the water! It really weakens the show for me when there isn't the interaction in the water. (and it seems like it makes most of the "Believe!" show pointless).

I totally understand. I don't think there have a been a lot of accidents to make it like it is a regular thing, but more that they happened so close together.

We just went yesterday to SeaWorld. We did not see the Shamu show though, the kid didn't want to.

Re- insemination Sorry, the news I was watching made it late breaking and that is what they said

I'm glad she wasn't hurt badly. I'm also glad that they mentioned which Orca it was. I just wish the press would quit calling them "Killer" whales. I know that that is their, I guess you could say, "common" name, but they are no more killers than any other meat eating mammals.
Including us!!

. . . I just wish the press would quit calling them "Killer" whales. . .
I think that at least for halloween they should call them "Killer whales from hell!" and have a show that tops "Jaws."

But seriously folks, orcas are presented as blue whale hunters in the show in the lobby of the Long Beach Aquarium. And my seal friends have informed me that several killer whales were kicked out of PETA when if was discovered that they weren't really vegetarians. They probably shouldn't even be in those (relatively) small Sea World tanks, and maybe they shouldn't be swimming with humans. Sea World could replace Shampoo (sp?) with a duck stunt show.
