Sea Notes
April 2007
1. EXHIBIT NEWS
WILD ABOUT OTTERS
It's almost here! Our fun and exciting new special exhibition--Wild About
Otters--opens March 31. The stars of the show, six African spotted-necked
otters, including two young pups, and four Asian small-clawed otters, will
captivate your heart as you journey into their native habitats and encounter
cool tropical freshwater fishes, reptiles and plants. Wild About Otters is a
multi-sensory adventure through five different galleries and an intriguing
array of live exhibits and family-friendly interactive displays. Start your
journey at: http://www.wildaboutotters.com
BABY WOLF-EELS
Don't miss the two baby wolf-eels on exhibit in the Kelp Lab. Only inches
long and with bright orange heads, they hardly resemble the fierce-looking
adults they'll grow up to be. They came from the Oregon Coast Aquarium where
they were born in November.
ADOLESCENT SEA BASS
Check out this youngster in the Rocky Reefs and Crevices exhibit in the
Kelp Gallery. This fish is currently 18 inches long, but adults can grow
to 7 feet long and weigh over 500 pounds! This youngster is from the
Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. We now have four giant sea bass on exhibit--there's
another adolescent in the Kelp Forest exhibit and two adults in the
Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit.
PARROTFISH
Splash Zone once again is home to several parrotfish and other reef fishes,
including surgeonfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and reef triggerfish--
"Humuhumunukunuku a puaa"--the state marine fish of Hawaii and a very
amusing name to say.
RUDDY TURNSTONE
We introduced a new ruddy turnstone to the Aviary. It's distinguishable by a
pink leg band and somewhat brightly orange-colored legs. This bird came to
us from a rehabilitation center in New York. It has an injured wing and can't
be returned to the wild.
Visit What's New? on our web site to learn more about new arrivals
in our exhibits.
