View Full Version : A Healthy Lemonade on the go?
mask41 03-13-2007, 08:36 AM I have 5-year old twin boys and I am planning on bringing along Juicy Juice boxes in our backpack for snack time in the park. However, one of my boys will only drink lemonade or milk. I was at the store today and all of the lemonade capri suns and CountryTime on the go packets were mostly sugar and high fructose corn syrup which I am trying to eliminate from their diets (autism and adhd - ugh). Does anyone know of a natural lemonade that can be stowed in a backpack for the day?
Thanks,
Amy

If they can have an artificial sweetner, you can get those add to bottled water packets, which have no sugar. Another option, which would have an artificial sweetner, is flavored water. The lemon flavored water tastes like watered-down lemonade. For an actual lemonade, check Whole Foods Market, if you have it in your area, which has their own brand of boxed juices and drinks, as well as other natural brands.
mom22gls 03-13-2007, 09:11 AM Another option. I have seen little packets of crystalized lemon juice, which you could just add to bottled water, adding little, or no, additional sugar.
Ponine 03-13-2007, 09:21 AM Hey Mask..
I have the Crystal lite lemonade packets all the time. My son loves the lemonade and pink lemonade.
They have 0 g sugar, and 35mg sodium.
I know the pink are a little different, but I dont have a pink box at work.
Give those a whirl.
TheKaz 03-13-2007, 09:35 AM I can't say I've seen them for sure, but I'd check your local health food store. We get all kinds of juice boxes for our daughter there.

Thanks,
AmyWhile we also have the ADHD/Autism (Aspergers) issues, we found the sugar made no difference (the activity we were participating in sure did though!) But, we do watch sugar now (weight issues) and we use the Crystal Light in the 16 oz bottles of water. They also come in tea versions, which my daughter and I like.
mask41 03-13-2007, 10:08 AM Thanks so much for all of your great ideas! I knew you guys would have the answer(s) for me!!!

woody9six 03-13-2007, 02:00 PM If you have access to a Trader Joe's, they have all natural lemonade juice box that are tasty, easy to transport, and free of all of the aforementioned icky-ness. They also have white grape juice, apple, and one other one...fruit punch perhaps. Hope this helps.
disney jones 03-13-2007, 03:56 PM thanks!! - we are going to DLR this week and i'm going to Trader Joe's for snacks right now.
(the only real lemonade i knew of was in bottles.)
disney jones 03-13-2007, 04:21 PM OK, i'm back from TJ's (3 mile RT). here's what i bought for 2-3 days at DLR:
Juicy Joe's kids Apple Juice - 80 oz. for $2.99 (8 x 10 oz boxes)
Juicy Joe's kids White Grape Juice - 80 oz. for $2.99
Juicy Joe's kids Lemonade - 80 oz. for $2.99
(ingredients for the lemonade are filtered water, sugar, concentrated lemon juice, citric acid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), gum acacia, natural flavors, ester gum)
avoid purple grape or fruit punch because the DD's pictures will end up with 'mustaches' on them. ;)
some trail mix bars, granola bars, and granola too - my bill was $21.21 - i couldn't even buy one meal for the me and the two DDs for that in the park!!
i usually like bigger containers of gatorade, just easier than multiple small boxes, but this will do. (I 'd previously picked up some propel and gatorade too.)
mommy-san 03-14-2007, 07:30 AM While this may not be what you need, the lemonade at DLR in the fountain pop machines is LIGHT with sucralose.
mask41 03-14-2007, 11:23 AM Thanks everyone - went to our local hfs today and got some lemonade juice boxes - all natural, lemon & other fruit blend - hopefully he will love them! Also got healthy go-gurts that I've stuck in the freezer to test those out. But now that I have looked at the desserts at Blue Ribbon, etc that my mom and I will indulge in at least once a day (horrible sweet teeth:D ) I wonder if the boys will nudge in on our chocolates and ice cream and forget the healthies - hee, hee!! Really, the healthy snacks I pack will be great for mid-morning snacks and line waiting times, so I feel pretty good about all of this!!!
Thanks again everyone,
Amy
