I don't know if this is a change you can easily implement, but I thought I'd bring it up.

CP and I share the computer at home, and we leave cookies on. Generally not a problem, now that I've finally learned to pay attention to whose user name is at the top of the reply page

But follow me on this. Today (and this has happened before), CP, who has her account set up to email her when she gets a PM, got a PM email. She clicked the link. I was the last person to be signed in on that computer, so it took her to my most recent PM (which happened to be an old one).

So I don't suppose there's any way to modify the link sent in the email to somehow ensure that it checks to see who's logged in? I'm guessing no since, thanks to the cookies, the board just goes to a generic url, and relies on the cookies for that kind of info. But it's worth asking, right?

If you're using either Netscape or Mozilla, you could set up a User Profile for each of you. It tracks each user's bookmarks & cookies separately and I think it would eliminate the problem you're having. You'd still share the same computer, but all you'd have to do is close your partner's browser and open "your" browser for the change to go into effect. You can even create your own shortcuts that open "your" browser (thus bypassing the "which profile" dialog.) PM me if you'd like assistance with setting this up. I set up my whole family on this system and it works great! (They're all technidiots, so I think that speaks to its ease of use.)

I don't use IE so I don't know if they have a simular (as we say in Indiana) feature.

Yeah, I know about user profiles. And I suppose that is the best way, deal with it on my end. But I'm an IE junkie. I used to be a Netscape devote, but just ran into too many hassles. IE is my lazy way out. It works 99% of the time (even if it is evil), and I'm just used to it right now. So the only way to do that would be to set up separate Windows users, and I never like having to log in every time I boot up, so you can forget that. Opening the wrong person's PMs is not life threatening, so I don't think I'll be doing anything drastic to prevent it.

This is how Tony and I have solved this problem on the computer that we share.

From the computer you share, Go to "Profile", and then "Edit Options"

You will see a question that asks:

Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies) yes no

If you set this to "no" on both accounts, you will be logged off the second you exit MousePad. It takes an extra few seconds to log in when you return to MousePad, but it's worth it to keep from resetting each other's cookies, or posting as the other one.

(It's also what we suggested when people found their cookies were reset just by reading the news headlines)

That would make sense, but doesn't that carry across to other computers? I do most of my checking at work and prefer to leave cookies on. Is that option selection computer specific? Can I simultaneously have cookies on at one while they are off at another?

YMMV, but I read MousePad from three different computers. One, (the one Tony and I share at home), is set NOT to accept cookies, the other two are. It seems to me that that one specific setting may be IP specific. If you don't mess with your other computer, you should be ok. Try it and tell us what happens.
