When I went to disneyland with my 1 year old we went on teacups and the first time she loved it, I held her on my lap and the CM running the ride was fine with that. We went on it a second time that day and a different CM told me I had to have her sit flat on the seat, so I followed what he said, and it made for a terrible ride. She couldn't hold on by heself so she wasn't stable and I was sitting sideways trying to hold her, I felt very unsafe with her like that. I was just wondering is this typical, which way do they normally do it? I didn't see any restriction about who could ride at all, so what if she was younger and couldn't sit by herself at all? Thanks for any help!!!

we just put our toddler next to us and held on tight with one arm. Ofcourse, there was very little spinning going on, so we weren't too worried.
No one said "boo" to us about it, so my advice would be once the ride starts, do whats comfortable for you.
Like on Peter pan- I only feel comfortable if my daughter is on my lap, so i atleast try to start that way. If i am corrected by the cast member, then I'll put her next to me and hang on TIGHT!

They have this restriction on Roger Rabbit - I dont' know if it's written anywhere but they have it.

It seems to be one of these things that either it's an official policy they don't tell the common people about or it's an urban legend that CMs have been trained for it at one attraction and then cross it over to another attraction or they have CMs that are trained differently by different trainers or....

Whatever the "official" answer is, it's frustrating that it's clearly unevenly applied. One time we went on the Pooh ride three times in a row. (There was no line, we were waiting for taller people who were riding Splash Mountain and it's my middle son's favorite ride.) Two times in a row, Cman sat on my lap and had a great time. The third time, the voice came from above that he had to get off my lap. I took him off my lap, he couldn't see and he was much less secure than he had been on my lap and holding on to the safety rail.

The reason goes back to the parents who weren't watching their son and he fell off of Roger Rabbit and was horribly injured. But it's stupid if you ask me. Either let them on the rides or don't.

Thanks for the help! Its hard becuase I completly understand why they would enforce that rule, but it was much harder on my daughter and I felt she seemed a lot less safe, that way. When she was on my lap I could firmly hold her.

That's my problem - If they were told that it was the way it had to be, I can understand "Ok, the lawyers tell us we have to do it this way."

But it's not clear that they have been and I agree with you, it is much less secure to have a young child sitting next to me than on my lap. Heck, those lapbars do nothing for him if he's next to ME on a seat  and on top of that, if he bounces around and I can't hold him firmly, he's going to hit the lapbar with his head!!! Or on the tea cups, if he leans forward, and then pulls back, the back of his head would hit the wall of the cup.

On my lap is much more secure!

I started POTC with DD next to me, but she couldn't see a darn thing. After the drops, I got her into my lap & she was much happier. She sat between adults on the teacups & we didn't have any issues. Then again, we didn't spin very much... She was 2 1/2 for that visit.

On PotC I have always held my little one, and it was my favorite nursing ride (had to make sure to cover up still, because of the cameras). I had my dd in my lap for every ride (that she could go on) and nobody said a thing. She was only 9 mos. though. I was holding in the queue for Roger Rabbit and a CM did tell me that she had to be fully awake to be able to ride. I opted to let her nap instead of riding. I am wondering if anyone will say anything this next trip now that she is almost 3, but will still be in my lap for most rides.

Last Summer & Fall I took both kids on the tea cups. My daughter was 3 & wanted to sit solo (totally capable, BTW). My son was 18 & 22 months, and I held him on my lap. Acceptable the 4-6 times we rode. Go figure   ... the lap thing is so much safer! It's not like we're in bumper cars and his tummy would be rammed as a lap rider ...
