Comments: For her final trip to Disney World in May (her third), Sue made a quick weekend trip to see a friend's last performance at Comedy Warehouse. Plan: Check in AS Movies, Comedy Warehouse (Jen's last night)
Actual: I'd planned to leave at 4, then decided 3:30 would be safer, and actually left the office at 3:45. It was an easy drive with no real traffic, and when I arrived at All Star Movies there was NO WAIT to check in!! I've never seen this, so it was a really nice surprise to not be in a long queue like cattle being led to slaughter, lol! Originally I was going to stay at Leesa's tonight, but knowing that it was going to be a very long day there was no way I wanted to have to do that long drive. So, Tuesday I booked a room at All Star Movies - money very well spent, in my opinion! I was put in the Love Bug section, which is the furthest one from the main building. That didn't matter though, since I had no need to be near anything other than my car in the parking lot. I truly would only be here long enough to sleep, so location didn't matter at all. The room ended up being nice & quiet - it was on the top floor, and near the end of one wing. Of course, maybe I was just too tired to hear anything ;-)
After checking into the room I got changed and called Leesa to see where she was. Lisa had already called and I knew she & Adie were skipping the first show. It was early enough I could make it in time, and I thought Mary might be working that show, so I decided to give it a try. I drove over to PI and arrived just after 7. Leesa met me in the parking lot to put her stuff in the trunk, then we went to the turnstiles. Mary ended up being at the turnstiles getting a few friends in for the evening - Leesa & I were further back, so Mary took her friends to drop them off at the back door and said for me to meet them when I got in. I left Leesa at the door and went upstairs to let Joe know we would be at all 5 shows - and chatted with him briefly. Back downstairs I introduced myself to Mary's friends and spent the time before the show getting to know them - nice people. David showed up without a ladyfriend tonight - we teased him about being solo!
We went inside and sat in long row. Jen B came out from the back and came over to give me some late-breaking news - she's also working Sunday & Tuesday! She said she would have emailed, but figured I was on the road already by the time she found out - I wouldn't have changed my plans anyway, since the hotel room was already paid for and I don't have to work tomorrow. Tonight is her official last night anyway, so Sun/Tues don't count - those are her first return visits as a sub. I did tell her I would not be coming back for either night, lol. I gave her the going away gift I'd brought, and she came up and watched the show from the stools behind us.
The 7:20 cast was Philip, Mary, Krista, Chris & Karl. Philip opened with the phone bit, and got a lady from CA who works corporate events as Barbie (works for Mattel) and is also Mrs. California. I really expected it to be a great opening, but it fell pretty flat early on and never recovered. The audience was very small, and not very responsive, but the material was also partly to blame tonight. Karl rang the bell in Should Have Said where Chris was in Dallas selling hats to Philip, her former boyfriend. Krista and Mary came in as the Bush wives, which provided some humor, but overall it was just ok. I kept sending telepathic messages to Karl to end the scene, but to no avail <g>. Next Mary & Krista came out as Buttercup & Saffron to sing a song called "Those soggy nights." Christine came in as a hippie on a guitar - it was a nice song & pleasant to listen to, but not particularly funny. They did Up Your Alley hosted by Mary as Yolanda. The subject was matchbox cars, and this structure wasn't any better than the others. Karl was Mario T Andretti, driver of actual matchbox cars on the racing circuit. Chris was a kid named Cindy Witherspoon, and Philip was Lloyd from the American Indian Match Co.
After the show I let Mary's friends know that was NOT a typical show, and that usually it's a lot funnier. They were here for the first time, and decided to give it another try. We talked to the cast after the show - everyone shared the same sentiments - it can only get better from here <g>. Outside I listened to Patty's voice mail, so I knew when to expect her and the rest of the gang. Once back inside Adie, Lisa, Tracy & Tyger were seated in tech row, so I went over to see them until the show started. Lisa had done something really cool - she used a ton of pictures of Jen (some she'd taken, the rest were mine) and created a collage inside the letters of her name. I loved the design, and she printed it on a mug for Jen. Later she got the idea to do t-shirts, so she & Adie provided Jen shirts to the 6 of us (Adie, Lisa, Tracy, Tyger, Leesa, me) plus Mary and of course Jen. Lisa gave us our shirts, and my bag had another bag inside - from Palm Beach Confectioners! I loved to buy chocolate there on each Ft Lauderdale trip, but that location closed. They found another one on their way up and brought me a box of chocolate-covered oreos - yummmmy!
The 8:15 cast was Philip, Mary, Jen B, Christine & Karl. They did Fill in the Blank with 2 volunteers from the audience. Jen & Chris were working doing hair transplants on a cat, and Jen ended up being Chris' lesbian husband. Mary was Chris' mom, coming in with a wedding gift, and Philip was the dad. Mary works as a stripper, and the scene was very funny - with the show off to a great start! Chris led the others in Madrigal, where each actor has a tabloid headline and they have to create new tabloids using the words in the original four. Mary started with Madonna marries rat boy, Jen had Spin & Marty shave Karen, Karl had Brad Pitt leaves Jennifer, and Philip had Where is Donald Duck? They all did a good job, and it was a fun structure. Next was Actor's Nightmare, which can be a show killer when it doesn't go well, but tonight it was Philip's nightmare and did an excellent job with it. Everyone except Philip had to recite all of their lines from different scripts, and Philip had to improvise his lines and make everything make sense to the scene he created in a Kroger supermarket. Overall this show was really good - more "normal". Mary's friends loved this one, and were glad they'd stayed. After the show a trip report reader came down and introduced herself - thanks so much for everything you said! Angela arrived, so I talked to her briefly, and then it was time for the next show.
The 9:15 cast was Philip, Jen B, Matt, Brian & Krista. During the opening song Matt was hysterical pretending to be the 14 yr old sister of the boy who answered the phone. The entire song was good, but Matt was the highlight! They did Conducted Story, led by Philip. The title was "Victory in Iraq", and it was funny but pretty disgusting at times. It had people chewing their lips off, chewing off fingertips, plates full of lice, but it worked <g>. The lead character was Jerry Lewis, who was President of the US. The deaths are always the best part for me, and tonight Krista was the first to die (the story got too weird for her so she committed suicide) in a silent death by chapstick. Brian died in a sound effects death by rubber band, but the audience volunteer wasn't very prolific with his sounds. Matt had a funny death by codfish, sung as an easy listening song. Jen wrapped up the story in the style of Fill in the Blank, and did an excellent job. Overall it was a great show!
After the show I met Patty, Gaby, Carey & Louis - Mary & Jason were out there, too. This was a long break between shows, but the time passed quickly with everyone there. The 10:30 cast was Mary, Jen B, Brian, Matt & Chris. They opened with the name rhyme game, which Jen won. They created a fairy tale narrated by Matt. It was set in Tulsa, and Jen was Amy Carter, who wanted to be a doctor. Brian at first was the only man - the village stud, and Chris was a woman without any sex. Later Brian came back as the village idiot - the jerk who brought sickness to the village that killed off most of the people. It probably sounds weird, but it was fun to watch! Forgotten Songs was next. Chris & Mary were alcoholics singing about AA in "Stairway to Hell." Matt wore an ape mask & hairy arms and sang "I love bananas" using sign language. Brian & Jen were a hick couple singing "Love is like feet" as a country-western song. The songs weren't the best I've seen, but they were pretty good. They played Schmeopardy next, with Mary hosting as Vanna Beige. Brian was a psychic investigator named Swami River the Happy Medium. Matt was hysterical as Roy Disney III, who works a minimum wage job cleaning up horse poop in the parade. Jen was a ditzy blonde named Peaches who drives a pink Mary Kay truck. It was a great Schmeopardy! After the show we visited with a bunch of people, and got Adie, Lisa, Tracy & Tyger added to the backdoor for the final show.
The 12:05 cast was Jake, Mary, Jen B, Matt & Krista. Jake announced it was Jen's last night, and she came out for some well-deserved applause. They did Song Cue, where the scene is interrupted 3 times to create a song from what was just said. Krista & Jen were working at a hot dog stand. They did "You come with us" as a country song, "The Mary Kay song" as an Indian musical, and "Get you a foot long mister?" as a reggae song. It was a great scene - it moved quickly and was lots of fun. As is typical on someone's official last night, they did Cliché next and tortured Jen. Tracy & Tyger gave the cliché - "Marry a man with an earring. He's bought jewelry and knows pain." Everyone did a great job - the clues were clever, and except for Jen thinking Caracas was the capitol of Mexico <g> she didn't have much trouble figuring everything out. It was a great show, but also sad knowing Jen won't be here very often anymore. She did tell me she'd email me when she'll be coming back into town, so hopefully our dates will match up.
After the show cm Bill complimented me on MousePlanet (which isn't my site - I just write for them) and all the trip report coverage of Comedy Warehouse. I don't know what he does at CW, but he seems like a nice guy - and Disney nut. The 6 of us posed with Jen for a photo on the stage, and then we headed out.
Last weekend Jen had invited us to her going away party after the final show. The location ended up changing - to the Burt Reynolds Suite in the Hotel Royal Plaza, which certainly made it very convenient. At the last minute (after I was at CW) I heard it got changed to "formal" - but it was too late for me to do anything about that, although I thought about skipping it rather than be inappropriately dressed. However, it turned out that Jen herself wasn't doing the dress-up thing - I got the impression the party wasn't entirely about her, either, based on several comments. In fact, it appeared to start long before she got there, and at one point when I asked a woman if she'd seen Jen recently the woman looked at me blankly. I repeated, saying I was looking for Jen Bascom and she said she had no idea who that person was - weird.
The suite is up on the 17th floor, and I saw the Barbara Mandrell suite down the hall. It was pretty big - someone said 1200 square feet, so it's smaller than the OKW 2-br villas. It's not nearly as nice, either - I thought it was pretty dated & somewhat tacky, although there were several balconies. None were wide enough for chairs, lol, but it was functional for people at a party to stand outside for a conversation. I don't mean to sound critical - I guess DVC is so superior it's hard to look at other places and say "wow" any more. The suite was very crowded, and entertainment was lined up performing in the living room. Krista's husband Mark hosted the party, and was dressed up in a tux - it was funny to see Philip and Jake also in tuxedos, looking very dashing. I ran into Jamie (keyboard player), who was also in a tux, and talked to him for a while, then wandered around checking the place out. I was there about an hour and got to talk to just about everyone I knew during that time. I told Jen that 2 different people had asked me tonight if I was related to her - and one of them even asked if I was her MOTHER!! Egads, I'd have to be quite the slut to be her mother, since she's only 13-14 years younger than I am, lol! Jen gave me permission to slap that person <g>. I had a really nice chat with Jason (Mary's husband) - I've met him a few times before, but this is the longest we ever spent together and I enjoyed his company. Eventually Brian (in jeans - thanks Brian <g>) joined us, Angela & Lisa too, and we had a great conversation. It was nice getting to know Brian better, as well. Around 2:30 I went to round up Leesa so we could get out of there. The others we came with had already left, and it was getting pretty late for us. We went in search of Jen (finding the woman who doesn't know her), and ran into Matt - he joined us in the search. We found her on a balcony and said our goodbyes, to Jen and other friends.
The drive back to All Star Movies was so much easier than driving to Kissimmee!! Leesa was wiped out and could barely walk, so I dropped her off near the building since I had to circle a good 5-10 minutes before finding an empty parking spot. My building's lot is shared with All Star Music, so parking spaces are hard to come by in that area. Eventually I went around to the other side of the building, and it was much easier. I gave Leesa the bed by the door and she pretty much fell face down on the bed and was sound asleep immediately. I wrote up a few notes, and went to bed about 3:20.
SATURDAY MAY 31, 2003
I got up around 8:15 - breakfast was cappuccino and biscotti, then I went to walk around the resort a bit. It was a gorgeous day - sunny, not too hot! At 9:30 I drove to Typhoon Lagoon and brought my chocolates to Angela. She was working in the ticket booth and she'd agreed to babysit them for me in the air conditioning while I was at the water park. She was pretty tired today, since she had to be to work at 8 and she walked out with us at 2:30 this morning! I set up my chairs in my little alcove and went to read at the edge of the wave pool. Eventually Adie arrived, and we spent the rest of the morning sitting at the water's edge talking. We didn't even bother with the bobbing waves, since we were busy talking.
Eventually we went back to the chairs, and brought in a lounge chair for her (my spot holds 2 comfortably). She went to get a soda and I laid on my chair. She came back hollering "take it off" because I'd taken off my swimsuit top (laying on my stomach, of course) and she made a point of calling Lisa to report that she was with me & I'd taken off my top. Lisa was too tired to care, though, lol - I didn't attract any men and wasn't doing any better with the lesbians <g>. I left around 1 and stopped to get the chocolate back from Angela and say goodbye to her. While in line waiting for her to be free, someone touched my shoulders and said "I know you" - it turned out to be someone who works for the same agency as me but up in Tallahassee. Small world! On the way out I stopped at Wetzel's for a pretzel. In retrospect, it was way too much food/calories for me at one time, but I had nobody to share it with. It wasn't really that great either, so I think Wetzel's is now in my past.
The drive home was boring but easy. I hate making the drive, especially so often, but I wouldn't have missed Jen's last night. At this point I'm not sure when the next WDW trip will happen, which is a scary thought! I know I'll be there in early August, but I can't imagine not being at Comedy Warehouse at all during June & July. There's an event Mary is planning, and I'll definitely go up for that, but at this point the date hasn't been scheduled. In the meantime, I've got my cruise on HAL's Zuiderdam to look forward to beginning June 7th. We've been looking forward to that trip for almost a year, and can't wait to get back on a cruise ship!

It's not nearly as nice, either - I thought it was pretty dated & somewhat tacky, although there were several balconies. None were wide enough for chairs, lol, but it was functional for people at a party to stand outside for a conversation. I don't mean to sound critical - I guess DVC is so superior it's hard to look at other places and say "wow" any more. The suite was very crowded, and entertainment was lined up performing in the living room. Krista's husband Mark hosted the party, and was dressed up in a tux - it was funny to see Philip and Jake also in tuxedos, looking very dashing. I ran into Jamie (keyboard player), who was also in a tux, and talked to him for a while, then wandered around checking the place out. I was there about an hour and got to talk to just about everyone I knew during that time. I told Jen that 2 different people had asked me tonight if I was related to her - and one of them even asked if I was her MOTHER!! Egads, I'd have to be quite the slut to be her mother, since she's only 13-14 years younger than I am, lol! Jen gave me permission to slap that person <g>. I had a really nice chat with Jason (Mary's husband) - I've met him a few times before, but this is the longest we ever spent together and I enjoyed his company. Eventually Brian (in jeans - thanks Brian <g>) joined us, Angela & Lisa too, and we had a great conversation. It was nice getting to know Brian better, as well. Around 2:30 I went to round up Leesa so we could get out of there. The others we came with had already left, and it was getting pretty late for us. We went in search of Jen (finding the woman who doesn't know her), and ran into Matt - he joined us in the search. We found her on a balcony and said our goodbyes, to Jen and other friends.
The drive back to All Star Movies was so much easier than driving to Kissimmee!! Leesa was wiped out and could barely walk, so I dropped her off near the building since I had to circle a good 5-10 minutes before finding an empty parking spot. My building's lot is shared with All Star Music, so parking spaces are hard to come by in that area. Eventually I went around to the other side of the building, and it was much easier. I gave Leesa the bed by the door and she pretty much fell face down on the bed and was sound asleep immediately. I wrote up a few notes, and went to bed about 3:20.
SATURDAY MAY 31, 2003
I got up around 8:15 - breakfast was cappuccino and biscotti, then I went to walk around the resort a bit. It was a gorgeous day - sunny, not too hot! At 9:30 I drove to Typhoon Lagoon and brought my chocolates to Angela. She was working in the ticket booth and she'd agreed to babysit them for me in the air conditioning while I was at the water park. She was pretty tired today, since she had to be to work at 8 and she walked out with us at 2:30 this morning! I set up my chairs in my little alcove and went to read at the edge of the wave pool. Eventually Adie arrived, and we spent the rest of the morning sitting at the water's edge talking. We didn't even bother with the bobbing waves, since we were busy talking.
Eventually we went back to the chairs, and brought in a lounge chair for her (my spot holds 2 comfortably). She went to get a soda and I laid on my chair. She came back hollering "take it off" because I'd taken off my swimsuit top (laying on my stomach, of course) and she made a point of calling Lisa to report that she was with me & I'd taken off my top. Lisa was too tired to care, though, lol - I didn't attract any men and wasn't doing any better with the lesbians <g>. I left around 1 and stopped to get the chocolate back from Angela and say goodbye to her. While in line waiting for her to be free, someone touched my shoulders and said "I know you" - it turned out to be someone who works for the same agency as me but up in Tallahassee. Small world! On the way out I stopped at Wetzel's for a pretzel. In retrospect, it was way too much food/calories for me at one time, but I had nobody to share it with. It wasn't really that great either, so I think Wetzel's is now in my past.
The drive home was boring but easy. I hate making the drive, especially so often, but I wouldn't have missed Jen's last night. At this point I'm not sure when the next WDW trip will happen, which is a scary thought! I know I'll be there in early August, but I can't imagine not being at Comedy Warehouse at all during June & July. There's an event Mary is planning, and I'll definitely go up for that, but at this point the date hasn't been scheduled. In the meantime, I've got my cruise on HAL's Zuiderdam to look forward to beginning June 7th. We've been looking forward to that trip for almost a year, and can't wait to get back on a cruise ship!
