1. EXHIBIT NEWS
WHITE SHARK RELEASED
How fast they grow! We released our young male white shark on Tuesday
(January 16), 137 days after we introduced him into the million-gallon
Outer Bay exhibit on August 31, 2006. While on exhibit, he grew from
5 feet, 8 inches long and 104 pounds to 6 feet, 5 inches and 171 pounds.
BUFFLEHEAD GALS
The bufflehead duck that has been in the Aviary for a while, and that
aquarists thought was a male is actually a female! With the recent
introduction of a new female bufflehead, there are now two females on
exhibit. We're still looking for a suitable male bufflehead, which when
mature will sport striking black and white plumage.
SPINY DOGFISH PUPS
What a litter! We introduced nine newborn spiny dogfish pups into the
non-touch area of the Bat Ray Pool in the Aviary. These were born behind-the-scenes
to an adult female spiny dogfish from the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit.
The pups are about a month old, range from six to eight inches long,
and are eating well.
NEW OCEAN SUNFISH
It's sort of like the sun and the moon. We introduced a second ocean
sunfish into the Outer Bay exhibit--a little guy that weighs about 70 pounds. The
large (600+ pounds) mola mola is still on exhibit and still amazing
visitors just with his/her presence. (It's notoriously difficult to
figure out a mola's gender without a necropsy.)
Visit What's New? on our web site to learn more about new arrivals
in our exhibits.

to the aquarium, taxpayers now have the option to contribute a small
portion of their tax refund to the state's sea otter research fund.
You'll find the check-off box on Line 63--the California Sea Otter
