Please help!!! Could some of you Disney fans from AZ tell me what the best way to go from Phoenix to DL would be? It has been two years and I don't remember what worked best. Plus, are there any closures or other trouble areas I should know about? I'm coming Sunday by myself with kids and could use some reassuring directions!
One last thing...how likely is it that I could buy tickets Sunday afternoon and get into the parks that day with the Candlelight Processional? Do they ever get busy enough to close DL on that day?

Looking at the end of that route, I'd actually suggest staying on The 91 to The 57 South and getting off at Ball Road.

Disney Jones would be a great person to PM and ask this question. He makes the trip often. Have a great time!!! I lived in Phx. for 30 years but forget (after 15 years in Seattle) how we used to drive to DL. I do remember the I-10 being involved! ha! (And passing the prison signs telling you not to pick up hitchhikers!) ;)

we made the trip november 8th.
The 10 West to The 60 West, to The 215 North, to The 91 South to the 5 North to Ball Road.
there are like limited signs (no signs that say "this way to disneyland" lol). And when there are signs, they come up on you FAST. Dh cursed alot. When you see the sign for anaheim you're getting close

and 91 South sucks during any kind of high traffic time.

Minor change to the suggested route above.

Stay away from the 91/60/215 interchange. It's still under construction. Depending on the time of day, stay on the 10 west all the way to the 57 south all the way to Ball road, go east for about 3 miles and you're there.

When we went in May of 05,we took 10-60-91-57.Coming from Tucson we usually do 10-8-805-5.
But thats just me,I know which 'lanes' to be in.

I have taken the 10-60-91-57 route as well. I have also tried staying on the 60 until it hits the 57. This is a tad longer distance wise (I think like 8 miles) but you can avoid the 91. I get off on Ball, go right, and it is about 3 miles or so to DL. There is a 7-11 on the right about a mile off the freeway. We like to stop there to throw out our trash and for a soda or water or something before we get to the park!

I agree totally!!!!!!!!

We have always done the 10, 60,91,57 route( good ole AAA)

We went June '05 and that interchange was a MESS!!!!. We were stuck in that mess for an hour before I got the map out.

We stayed straight on the 60 all the way to the 57 then to Katella. It was only about 10 miles out of the way but there was NO TRAFFIC. This was a Sunday, midday. It took about the same amount of time if you could get throught the 60/215/91, during normal no construction!!!.

the 91 through Riverside is... UGH!!!!!!

We are going to go the 10,60,57 in june. We will be pulling a trailer so we know to stay in the left lane to go straight on 60

One more suggestion for routing...

10 westbound
15 south to the
91 Westbound to the
57 Southbound
Get off on Ball Road go about 2 miles and you are there!

I live near Riverside and the 60/91/215 interchange is a mess all the time! I went to DLR yesterday and stayed on the 10 to the 57 south and where the 60 and the 57 come together is also a mess, I wasted about 25 minutes stuck in traffic on a Tues. morning around 10 am. and it was all because of the construction going on. My route above avoids all construction!

Looking at the end of that route, I'd actually suggest staying on The 91 to The 57 South and getting off at Ball Road.with andrew's modifications, this is the best: 10 W to 60 W (Beaumont) to 215 N a few miles, then the 91 West (Riverside), to the 57 S a few miles to Ball Road then west.

i've lived i the desert all my life (Phoenix, Palm Springs) - its the shortest route. the key is to avoid Riverside during rush hour, especially the 91 from 6am to 10 am heading from Riverside to OC.

i'm shocked how many people drive miles out of their way to avoid the 91, (or even the 60), but if they do, they'll be in Brea Canyon on the 57 S while i'll already be on Matterhorn Mountain.

I've gone every year for the past 4 years and I do the 91 to the 57 to Ball Road route. I only did the I-5 route once, and it seemed to take longer. Of course, construction had only just begun on the 215 interchange last time I went, so I'm not sure if we'll take that exact same route this time around or what. We usually hit that area right around the middle of the day, not at rush hour. Has anyone found it to be not so bad at midday, or is it a nightmare no matter when you reach that spot?

(And passing the prison signs telling you not to pick up hitchhikers!) ;)

LOL...I remember those from when I was a kid. I was just telling my sister about them on our way out of Phoenix for Thanksgiving. Unfortuneately, they're long gone. So much so that she doesn't even remember them and she's only a year and half younger than me.

One big benefit of doing the 10 straight to the 57, is that much of the trip is using Carpool lanes. Only the segment from the 10/57 interesection to where the 57 splits with the 60 doesn't have them.

And IMHO, anything to avoid the 91 is worth it. Seems that freeway can be a mess any time of the day.

I live about 15 minutes south of Disneyland on the 5. We go a lot and have the route to the parking structure down to a science. (of course if you are going to a hotel or need to make additional stops before the park, this may not be the best.) Simple instructions in bold.

From the 5 heading North:

Go North on the 5.
When you go past the 57, get in the right lane.
The a new right hand lane opens up just before Harbor.
Get over to the right and exit at Harbor.
Stay in the left on the offramp, and edge to the middle lane at the light.
Turn right (on red) and head to the left most lane of Harbor.
Immediately, get into the far left turn lane of Harbor to Ball Road.
(use the near left turn lane on Ball if you want to hit the gas station on the far left corner)
Turn left onto Ball.
Stay on the left hand side and get in the left turn lane for the parking structure(big signs point the way)
Follow the signs and veer left to the parking structure (not the hotels).
Enter the parking structure in the far right lane, it seems to go the fastest.
When going up the long ramp to the upper levels, stay in the right lane, it will wrap around and put you closer to the escalators.
If you really want to be bold, cut down an empty row and park at the front (only recommended if are the kind who pushes your stroller into peoples calves to get through the crowds faster.)

^ But for many folks, that is not the best option...

If you are going North on the 5, many folks will be in the Carpool lane.

If you need to go to the parking structure, get off at the Disney Way exit, and then you can either go all the way to Harbor Blvd, make a right at Harbor to Ball, and then follow the instructions above.

Or you can turn right at Manchester (First right you can make, though it is the third light), follow that to Harbor (past Howard Johnson's) and then a right on Harbor, and a left on Ball, and follow the directions above.

But if you are not an AP holder, then all you have to do is go straight on Disney Way, it will take you to the Timon Parking Lot Toll Booths (Unless you decided to park in Pummba). The drawback of going to Timon, is the fact you are not sure where you will be sent to park. If Timon is open, and has spaces, you luck out, and have a short Tram ride to the park. Otherwise, you might be sent to Simba (especially in the early morning hours), this is the worst option, a longer walk than if you parked at Pummba, and no tram service. Otherwise, they will give you directions to the Mickey and Friends parking structure (this is the most likely choice, especially on slower days).

I never take the carpool Disney exit. It goes on surface street for too long, and if Timon is closed, you have to go all around the park to Mickey and Friends on some very confusing side streets adding a good 20 minutes to your drive. Traffic is never heavy past the 57, so getting to the right side shouldn't be a problem even during rush hour. I have done every variation of this route many times, and my method is the fastest. Trust me, Harbor is much faster than the carpool exit and the 57 to ball.

Yes DarkBeer, but MANY people also are able (capable) to merge out of the carpool lane and exit at the Harbor/Ball rd exit, the easiest route to the Mickey and Friends Prking Sturcture. I have to agree with BYTEBEAR. Getting off at the carpool exit leads to a mouse chase to find the parking structure in which you need to make many turns and detour that makes no sense, and will lead to a u-turn (90%) at Ball Road, SOOOOO, if you get off at Harbor/Ball, you will save yourself much hassle and headache.

bytebear is right - we usually stay in Dana Point (Doheny State Beach) on out multiday trips and take the car pool lane all the way up .... but don't take the Disney Way Car Pool exit - we get out of the carpool lane just after that, and quickly and easily merge to Harbor and Ball even at 8am - it's an easy merge over there.

but Darkbeer is right too - Timon is easy if you get in, and 50% of the time Mickey and Friends is a frustrating experience, so depending on my mood, i'll avoid it.

Never went the 10 to 57 before. Is it pretty straight, meaning no hills, as the 60 is?

Hate the 91 any time of the day!!!! Came in on the 91, 4 yrs ago around 8pm and it was a mess.

The only time been on 5 was going to Universal 4 yrs ago. early Sunday morning took us 30 min to ge tthere and 3 hrs top get home!!!

Any way to get there easy if GREAT!!! lol

I remember it being pretty straight. You go by Ontario airport if I remember right. It was more city driving then the 60. I liked having the carpool lanes.

One note, when we went this way I had to go to the restroom really badly! Like really badly!!! We were going through Brea (maybe 15-20 minutes from DL) and I couldn't take it anymore. So, we pulled off and stopped at this little coffee place. I look at map, we are right by Harbor. "oh, it doesn't look that far. We can just take Harbor instead of backtracking to the freeway." NO!!! It was forever and there was a light (red of course!) every three blocks. I think it was over an hour to get there! So, the moral is: if you can not wait to use the restroom- go back to the freeway!! Do not take Harbor from Brea!!!

So, does anyone know how the construction is coming along on the 215/91 interchange? I just remember that the last two years I went in March and that interchange was under construction. In 2004 we hit that spot around 5pm and it was a nightmare. In 2006 we hit it during the late morning, and it wasn't bad at all (we'll probably hit it around the same time this trip in early Feb.).

Knowing that I prefer country driving to city driving (and so care little about the carpool lane advantage), would anyone recommending sticking to that interchange? How far along is the construction? How far out of my way will it take me to avoid it, as others in this thread have suggested? Is it really worth it to take the I-10 all the way to the 57, or is the interchange mostly done (or should be mostly done by the first week of Feb.)? Is it really only a 10 mile difference?
