I really need to start a strength training program. I've been doing cardio and telling myself that I need to get going with the weights, but I haven't put a program together yet. I think I have everything I need--last year DH got (but hasn't used ;) ) a great set of adjustable free weights, a weight/incline bench, balance ball, etc. I've been reading magazines and trying to come up with a plan...I've lifted weights at the gym before and know the basics (targeting different areas of the body on different days, weight v. reps, etc.) but I need help drawing up a plan.

Can you recommend any good books or websites? I may ask for a visit from a personal trainer for Christmas, but since I need a new iPod I'd rather spend the money on that. I'm looking to tone up, strengthen my core and sculpt my arms.

Let me HIGHLY recommend one of the best programs out there for home training.

Body For Life by Bill Philips. (12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength)

There is also an ajoining cookbook, Eating For Life by Bill Philips

AND the website www.bodyforlife.com

In the late 80/s and early 90's I was a completely natural competive bodybuilder. (David Prowse, the original Darth Vader and trainer to Chris Reeves for Superman was my original trainer). I then worked with a local (Central CaL) gentleman who was also incredible. At the time, I weighed 181 lbs, had 16 1/2 in biceps and 5% bodyfat (and being a 5'7" female). Felt great and could take on the world.

Well, my trainer's divorce (not David, but Jerry), the loss of his gym, my own divorce, etc. took it's toll and I rediscovered fast food and slacking off. Recently I have been looking into getting back into shape and discovered Bill Philips program. It is very similar to my old work out, but the food is much more balanced and you don't even feel like you are watching what you eat. (You eat 6 small meals a day, the website and book fills you in on everything). I Feel great..workouts are tough, but in a good way. I currently broke down and purchased a Golds Gym Power Flex machine..and good quality treadmill. With these two machines I can perform every exercised needed, plus cardio. Add to it the Body For Life program and OMG...weight is dropping, muscle is building and I am confident I am going to get back into my 30 inch pants by this summer. (Currently just dropped to a 34 from a 38).

So. if I'm rambling..it's cause I'm excited. Hope this helps and will be checking in. I like the whole support thing going on here. It really helps. I've been incredibly fit, and ripped, and then went to the other side of the weight scale and bloated, fat (no other word for it) and felt miserable both physically and emotionally. Looked at my own health issues and decided it was time to do something about it. So...hope this helps.

Oh before I forget, the best part of Body For Life is that it is COMPLETELY spelled out for you. The exercise program, the eating program and 24/7 online support if you have questions.
