Hello All,

I'm looking for some advice from a sound person. I am one of many who run the sound system at my church on Sundays.

Background:
We purchased a new set of speakers (JBL Mpros) and finally had them mounted on the walls. We run a goose neck mic for the pulpit and use it for sermons and other speaking parts. We run a Mackie 1604 and a QSC amp (forgot the power levels).

The problem:
The speakers are getting some feedback through the system when we use the pulpit. The wierd thing is that you can hear the feedback at the front of the sanctuary but you cannot hear it at the back. My thought process tells me that if we have a feedback problem that it will be throughout the church, not just at the front. The sound room is in the back of the church (its own problem) but you cannot hear the ringing that we are getting from the back.

SO, can anyone come up with a suggestion as to how to fix it? I was told by GuitarCenter to get a feedback destroyer but I was hoping that I could get another idea so we didn't have to spend the money of the feedback destroyer.

Are you running monitors on stage at all? Sometimes if they are too loud, we get feedback as well.

If not, try adjusting the location if the pulpit, if its not stationary, or position of the mike. Even a few inches can make a difference.

Any way to adjust the main speaker angles?

Sometimes, even a different mic would do the trick.

This is one of those cases where experemtation, and patience, is going to teach you more than anything else. It may take several hours to tune things just right, but if the results are acceptable and you dont have to shell out cash for a consultant, then it is time well spent.

Thanks GusMan, good things to work on. I tried moving the pulpit back a few inches last weekend, didn't work but we might be able to get a few extra inches this weekend.

We do not have monitors set up right now, this is the next project. Actually, the project is to get the main speakers set up with new speaker lines and this will allow us to free up the old speaker lines.

I think I'll work on the new mic in the next few weeks to see if that helps.

Thanks!
