Well the verdict is in, what was going to be my first Disney
Marathon is now officially not happening. This is one of those "it
sucks to be me" moments, so I am posting this to the friends who
will understand better than anyone what a blow this is to me. :crying:

I have managed to screw up my right hip so badly with a combo of
bursitis and IT band issues that my training came to a grinding halt
3 weeks ago after a 10 miler left me in such agony I wasn't sure I
was going to make it back to my car.

I've been in a "no training period" since then and had x-rays and an
MRI. It is so bad that I was put on crutches on last Thursday in
addition to the meds in a effort to get the inflamation down. I
will start 2x a week intensive PT this coming week.

My docs and PT folks are with The Ohio State University Sports Med
Center that treats all of the OSU athletes, so when they tell you
that it is not happening, you believe them. Since this was going to
be my first marathon ever, I know that even with a "miracle" cure, I
won't be ready to conquer that distance in Jan.

My new short term goal is to be able to stroll a 4 miler on
Thanksgiving Day with my DH and DS. The cool part is that it is a
Penguin Race :) including the famous big Honkin Medal. That little
penguin always cheers me up.

To those of you who will be at the Disney, smile extra big in those
pics, post great trip reports and here is hoping I can join you next
year!

Kathy, I'm so sorry to hear about your injury. That's one of my big worries as well. I will keep you in my thoughts when I'm feeling too tired, and will definitely be sharing a trip report of some kind here after my experience!

It's good that you're listening to the docs, and sounds like you're getting excellent treatment. Take care of yourself, and let us know how the 4 miler goes!

Oh Kathy - that stinks! I'm so sorry that you can't make it this year. But I think that as special as a Mickey medal is, it doesn't trump having the ability to walk!!

I hope your healing goes well.

Take care,

Mara

On the bright side...it still could be possible....try to look at that glass as 1/2 full...

Years ago I ran the first Disney marathon to accomplish my lifetime goal of running a marathon and had the same problem happen to me [for the second time!] at the other end of the it band near the knee. To make a long story short I went through PT, running sparingly and found x-training to help. As the weeks went on [3 weeks of PT and probably 2-3 more of 'self PT'] the my reduced running, stretching, anti-inflamitory drugs, icing combo worked...to the point that I could run stretch and ice.

I said for the 2nd time since I had gone through this on the first attempt to run a marathon 10 years earlier but after I got off crutches I took up another sport which took me on a 10 year detour from this goal and never 2nd guessed the first diagnosis of you can not run. In your case, I'm sure you have the medical staff that can help you through this...I did the second time around due to my other sport. This happened at almost the exact same time for me as you, the mid-point of Oct.

To this day I never have beaten the time I ran in that first marathon. Today I religiously perform a series of stretches and have never had a reoccurance of the problem and have run now a 1/2 dozen marathons.

Good luck

Kathy,
So sorry that you won't beable to do your full in January. I'm sure it won't be to long and you'll be back. Maybe for Minnie's 15k in May. You've been an inspiration for us newbies just getting starting. Good luck with your therapy.

Kathy,

I'm so sorry to ear about your injury. I have suffered from IT band issues in the past. I can't imagine what it must be like when combined with bursitis, but I'm sure it is excruciating. Best wishes for a complete recovery.

Thans to everyone who has sent the good wishes my way - this group is great! Per my race packet, while I can't get a refund for this year, I can get a guaranteed entry for next year by notifying Disney in writing by Nov 11.

Sooooo, I am thinking positive and writing that letter!
