View Full Version : Turnstile Anxiety... help me!

I'm going to Disneyland tomorrow and my "turnstile anxiety" is turning into a full blown turnstile fear.
I'm heavy and carry my weight in my hips and rear. My last time there, I had a couple of moments of panic at some of the tight turnstiles (I seriously thought I was stuck) and I really want to avoid that this time.
Which attractions now have the new electronic "people counters" instead of the old fashioned turnstiles?
Is it possible to circumvent them at some of the attractions by asking to use the wheelchair access?

MrsSmith,
I would strongly suggest you ask to use the stroller gate/wheelchair gate at the main entrance. If questioned simply say you have a fear of the turnstile, the CM's are very gracious. Once inside the park you can go into the City Hall and explain the situation to the CM inside. I don't KNOW that they will offer any alternatives but that would be the route I would highly recommend.
Hi! I hope you have a fun, fun trip!
My dear friend, a major Disneyland fan, weighs 300 pounds. She always uses the wheelchair entrances to the rides and the two parks. The CMs have never been anything but gracious about it - always acting like its the most normal request to make.
So, just use those entrances and have fun!

Thanks for the advice mamma and rkkm....eases my mind to know I have that option.
But if anyone knows about the "electronic" ones, I'd sure like to know.

To the best of my knowledge....
The Opera House has converted to them
Indiana Jones has them in the exit (no turnstiles at the entrance)
Pirates has an new version (overhead), so no turnstiles.
Haunted Mansion has turnstiles at the exit, so you need to let the CM know you can't use them when loading onto the Doom Buggy
Pooh has the new electronic eye version
Roger Rabbit has the electronic eye version, as does the Mickey and Minnie house, and Gadget Go coaster, but that would be a tight fit to sit in the kiddie coaster train.
Space Mountain has the electronic eye version
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters also has the electronic eye.
In DCA, all attractions use the electronic eye version, the only turnstiles you will find will be at the main entrance/exit to the park.

NO turnstiles at any attraction inside DCA?!?! Woo hoo !!!
So pirates took out the turnstiles that were inside the building? I don't have to worry about that one? Wow. That's good to know. I would have probably skipped it.
And if I go on Haunted Mansion, then how do I get out if I can't use a turnstile?

Talk to the CM loading the vehicle, they will allow you to return to the beginning and go back up thru the entrance.
As mentioned earlier, go to City Hall when you first arrive and explain the situation, they should give you the most current information possible.

when DW was pregnant, up until 2 weeks ago, she wold get stuck in a few turnstiles, such as Jungle cruise and HM. usually, the cast members would understand and let us in through the wheelchair access, or out as in the case of HM. If that doesn't work for you there is always the SAC. city hall is pretty good with people that have special needs, if explained in a non-expectant manner. just tell them your frustration and anxieties, and that you would rather avoid any embarassment, and they will give you this rather nifty card that you can use on most rides. and avoid all turnstiles.

I always have a shoulder bag with me and the two worst turnstyles I found are Mr. Toad and Peter Pan. (I think they are the narrowest ones).

Wow, I didn't even know there were electronic turnstiles! Cool!

The turnstile in the Jungle Cruise is the only one I have to turn sideways to fit. For some reason, that's the only one I have a problem with.

Did anyone see the first of three reports on obesity on The Today Show? Turnstyles are just a minor problem.
Turnstyles are just a minor problem.
Why a minor problem? If you're not sure you can get to where you want to go, wouldn't they potentially be a major problem?
I can so relate to this. Major turnstyle anxiety at DL when I was at my heaviest. Fantasyland was the worst for this-possibly due to the fact that it houses some of the oldest attractions. City Hall was very understanding as well as the CM's at the individual attractions.
Not a turnstyle but Indiana Jones caused a moment of panic-the lap/bar seat combination was a narrow fit. I'm short and carried my weight(still do in fact) thru the middle so the stomach/back-end part was an issue-but taller people probably wouldn't have this problem.

I was referring to the health problems. For example this generation maybe the first to not live to an older age than their parents.
I was trying to say that dying early is worse than not being able to easily get into a theme park.

Right and everybody is already aware of that.
Have a lovely time in the parks, MrsSmith.

Are you sure everyone is aware of this?
Two thirds (!) of Americans are obese. If you knew you had trouble getting through turnstyles and that obesity is unhealthy what would you do? Lose weight or fret about getting through turnstyles?

When you look at the first words of the original post
I'm going to Disneyland tomorrow...(emphasis added)
the problem is clear.
Everybody is aware that obesity is a problem, and everybody from a stick-thin anorexic model to those twins on the motorscooters in the Guinness book knows exactly how much extra poundage they're packing and how they got it. And everybody knows how to lose weight: Eat less, exercise more. That's all there is to it. Although executing is difficult.
MrsSmith's problem is "How do I get through those turnstiles tomorrow?"
And an anti-obesity rant, however factually correct, isn't going to help MrsSmith tomorrow.

I will not start an anti-obesity rant. But note this isn't her first time there and she knew this problem (of her own doing) was coming.

Medical problem--oh please. Take a look at the pictures of visitors to Disneyland in the 50's and 60's. Take a look at the medical statistics. An increase of 50% in obesity in the last 20 years. This is due to a new medical condition? What percentage of obesity is due to medical conditions--.1 to .2%?
I wasn't going to turn this into a rant, but get real. We are a nation of porkers and it is mostly our own choice.

The old man, if you wish to debate obesity in the United States, I would suggest that you start a new thread in the Lounge to discuss it.
The OP was asking a question about access issues; your continued posts regarding obesity are rude, insensitive and not helpful.
