View Full Version : Anyone here do anything besides run?
I Are Baboon 10-12-2006, 09:25 AM I'm still a newbie here but check this forum frequently. It seems to be seriously dominated by runners. I'm just curious what else people here do for exercise or active fun. You've probably covered this topic before, so go easy on me. :D
Myself, I'm an avid cyclist. Mountain biking primarily, but I do my share of road riding. I do one or two mountain bike endurance races every year as well. I also lift weights three times a week. As far as running goes, I do run a couple times a week on a treadmill...usually 3 or 4 miles each time.
When the winter comes, DW and I ski every chance we get. We're Mt Snow season pass holders.
I'm planning on trying a triathlon next year. You run, you bike, you swim. How hard can it be? :D
I Are Baboon 10-12-2006, 09:33 AM Oh, I also play deck hockey (organized street hockey...played on a rink and everything). I probably do that better than anything.
Yep. I respect the runners but I am not one of them.
I swim. I walk a lot. I do tae bo. When it's c-c-cold like today, I do the elliptical in the basement.
Swim and Cycle. Although my cycling has been cut back dramatically with equipment issues. I am being fitted for a new bike on Monday, so hopefully I can get back into it with a vengence soon.

Ugh. I joined a triathlon club and am training for my first triathlon. Running is by far the hardest for me. I would love to do a duathlon, but alas, they usually cut out the swimming, and not the running.
rtroeh 10-12-2006, 12:55 PM I just did the Redman triathlon in Oklahoma City two weeks ago. They offered an event called "Aquabike" which was just swimming and biking, no running.

Ooh ooh, what are you getting!?
I'll probably shop for a new mountain bike next year. The wife just got one, so now it's my turn. :)

I am right there with you. I would do a duathalon in a heart beat if they cut out the run.
TrekkieDad 10-12-2006, 07:57 PM I ride--mostly on the road. Once in a while I go mountain biking. I have a full suspension mtb and two road bikes--one for commuting and riding the flats and one for riding in the hills.
I also do a short weight training routine three times a week. But if you check my sig, you'll see that bike riding is my primary recreational activity.

Not sure yet. I am going in with the goal of getting something that will work well for flat roads and triathlons/time trials, however, I do not want a TT/Tri bike only. I will probably get another bike next summer for hills. I want a low-end bike of the high-end market, if that makes sense. Basically, I want a quality bike, but it would be silly to get something really expensive. I mean, I could spend a lot of money shaving a few pounds off of the bike, but I would be much better off shaving a few pounds of fat off of myself. ;)
So Monday, I am going to go be measured, and they are going to adjust a shop bike for me and have me ride on the trainer. Then, sometime in the next week, I will come back and test-ride a few bikes that he will have setup for my geometry. Maybe put 20-30 miles on each one (one ride each day). Then, once I find the one I like, I will buy it.
I am leaning towards the Cervelo Soloist Team (http://www.cervelo.com/models/fullsize/2006_Cervelo_Soloist_Team.png). It is the lowest model of the Cervelo lineup, and it doubles as a TT/Tri bike. However, I might also check out a true TT/Tri bike and continue to ride my Bianchi in the mean time.
These are on my short list, along with the Cervelo in roughly this order:
Pinarello Galileo (http://www.daviswheelworks.com/bikes/pinarello/images/galileo/galileo_blue.jpg)
Felt F55 (http://www.feltracing.com/store/images/extralarge/f55.jpg)
Specialized Allez Comp Double (http://www.daviswheelworks.com/bikes/specialized/images/road/06allezcomp2_lg.jpg)
By the way, does anyone else see the irony of "Soloist Team"?
Power walk 3-4 times per week. The other days I do aerobic walking dvd's. Do some toning with free weights most every day.
For the bikers, I co-led a Univ of Wisconsin bike tour through Ireland waaay back when I was pregnant with Daughter #1. Ireland is beautiful, shaped topographically like a bowl but the shoulders on the road are narrow and often there is a stone wall right there - no maneuvering space if a truck comes along. Also, the tertiary roads are the ones you want but often not marked with signs once you get there, not paved, similar to cow paths quite often.
My dream vacation is a walking tour of England's lake country.
Anyone ever think of doing a bike tour or walking tour?

I did six bike tours of southern and central Oregon with the Sacramento Wheelmen. Trucks carried our gear, and we camped in a different location each night for a week.

Before I took up running, I did a lot of walking (40 miles/week). A friend took a walking tour across Ireland. I thought that sounded like a lot of fun A walking tour of the English countryside would also be nice.
rph13 10-15-2006, 09:53 AM My daughters and I take Tae Kwon Do (we are up to our green belts, half way to black!!) and I power walk 3 to 4 mornings a week. In the winter we like to cross country ski on the local trails on in our backyard. and in the summer we swim in our pool but thats more for fun than serious exercise.

Nice work, rph13! My daughter is a first-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. It's a terrific sport.
kisroo 10-15-2006, 02:09 PM I walk, walk, walk!
I can't wait to get past my injury enough to get back into more group classes. I loved doing aerobics, spinning, and weight lifting classes. I'd also love to get back into swimming. I miss the pool at 5am. So quiet and peaceful. :)

rph13 10-15-2006, 06:10 PM Thanks 3894!! The great thing about TKD is that we can all do it together, the school we joined has a family class that starts at age 6 and up so as soon as my younger daughter turned 6 we joined up. I was afraid that she would be left behind but the kids do better at remembering the forms than I do! Congrats to your daughter, it takes a lot of hard work to make it to black belt.:D
RStar 10-16-2006, 10:36 PM I had started jogging on the beach at lunch time, and have always done a lot of walking. But that all slowed down since my surgery. I'm just starting to feel more like myself, and my PT is about done.
So, today I joined a gym. A private club type gym right next door to where I work in Huntington Beach. A bunch of the people at my work go there, so I figured I need to do something else to keep in shape. I use to run in High School, but that's been 30 years ago.
Other than that, nothing but staying active at work, around the house (a lot of yard work and gardening), and going to DL for Loooong walks! But nothing real structured.
I just hope I can keep it up!

Sweet. I joined a local gym yesterday, mainly for the pool. I'm going to start swimming tonight, but last night I did an hour of cardio on the treadmill.
stan4d_steph 10-17-2006, 09:15 AM I play soccer in an indoor league. Right now I'm on hiatus from that to avoid any additional injuries before the marathon.
I used to fence starting in junior high and all through college. I would like to get back into it, but I'm not in an area that's got any strong clubs unfortunately.
