QuikQuote: Mobile ESPN, a start-up cellphone company backed by Walt Disney Co., will announce as soon as Thursday that it is closing down operations, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
The newspaper said Mobile ESPN is hoping to reinvent itself as a content partner of bigger wireless carriers, citing people familiar with the matter. ESPN could not immediately be contacted.

I wonder if the same thing is going to happen to Disney Mobile. I waited quite a long time to buy a new cell phone, planning to sign on with Disney Mobile as soon as it was launched. What a disappointment! They offer very few unique features but charge a decent premium over competitors. Now I've started seeing ads for the service, telling me they're not meeting subscription goals. They either need to make it worthwhile or scrap it, partnering with a true mobile provider more openly.

Boy, does this sound fimilar. I believe many said the same thing in the discussion threads that came out when the service was first announced. Personally, they do not come close to package I have with Cingular and the GPS offerings they have are a premium type of feature. (Besides, is the GPS feature really all that necessary??)

I hate to say it, but most people are not going to buy it just because it has Disney's name on it, especially if it is more expensive. I know there will be people that do, and that is cool too. Though, with the industry being so competitive, there needs to be some value-add features included with the extra costs.

I hope that does not happen to Disney Mobile, but they need to price themselves correctly.

Okay seriously what enticed the people that bought into ESPN & Disney Mobile to do it? I don't see that what is added to the normal Sprint service is worth anything near what they're charging for it.

I mean what made them think people would be that willing to pay to have those names attached to their phones? hmmm it seems someone in a marketing department is about to be shown the door.
