1. EXHIBIT NEWS
WHITE SHARK UPDATE
White sharks have been around for more than 11 million years. Our
new young male has only been around here for a few weeks--since
Aug. 31. But already his life has been evolving pretty fast. We
don't know how long he'll be with us; our first white shark
stayed for 6½ months. So now is definitely the time to visit if
you want to get a look before we return him to the wild.
When he first moved in, the shark had to get used to the window
on our million-gallon Outer Bay exhibit so he wouldn't bump into
it. A temporary "bubble curtain" did the trick in just a few
days.
He also had to get used to his fellow exhibit residents, and
that wasn't much of a problem either. At 5 feet 8 inches and
104 pounds, the young shark isn't the biggest fish in the
exhibit by any means. But the others seem to give him the
biggest berth. (Who says fish aren't smart?)
Not eating his exhibit-mates is a very good thing in our shark.
But at first he didn't eat any of the food we offered him either,
and that wasn't ideal. Then, exactly a week after he arrived,
he ate a California skate. And ever since, he's been chowing
down on a regular basis--sometimes more than five pounds a day--
with salmon fillets a huge fave.

"OCEANS IN GLASS" RE-BROADCAST
If you missed it in January, the compelling "Oceans in Glass:
Behind the scenes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium" will re-air on
Sunday, Oct. 15, on PBS's Nature. Filmed by the award-winning
team at Sea Studios in Monterey, the program offers a visually
stunning look at what it takes to create our exhibits. The
program also features the white shark we had on exhibit for six
months before releasing her in March 2005. For a preview of the
program, visit www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/oceansinglass/.

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION
A VICTORY FOR SEA OTTERS
We're celebrating two big victories for marine life and the
California coast. First, legislation giving California's
threatened sea otter population more protection has been passed.
Assemblyman Dave Jones was inspired to write the bill when he
visited our sea otter exhibit with his family. The assemblyman's
5-year-old son, Will, was moved to tears when he learned about
threats that sea otters face.
"Dad, you've got to do something to help the sea otters," Jones
recalls his son saying. Jones talked with staff at our Sea Otter
Research and Conservation program and introduced the bill a few
months later.
A VICTORY FOR MARINE PROTECTED AREAS
In August, the state's Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously
to create a network of marine protected areas off the Central
Coast, including marine reserves where fish and other marine
life will be protected, so populations can rebound and eventually
restore waters outside the reserves, too.
Our thanks to all of you who joined our Ocean Action Team and
contributed your voices to the outpouring of support that won the
day for sea otters and coastal protection. If you're not yet an
Ocean Action Team member, you can join now and be part of the
victories to come.
