View Full Version : New iPod release
stan4d_steph 09-12-2006, 12:31 PM For those in the know, a question.
The latest iPods were released today. Is the 30GB U2 video iPod that appears to still be available the same as the latest version of the 30GB iPod?

Thay have not announced a refresh to the U2 iPod model, so any that are available today are the old model.

Among the enhancements are new games (Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini golf, Pac Man, Tetris, Texas Holdem, Vortex, and Zuma), Gapless playback (#1 request according to Jobs), a 60% brighter display, and longer battery life.
Andrew 09-12-2006, 01:32 PM All the details about Apple's "Showtime" announcements can be found here (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060912-7722.html) with follow-up coverage here (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060912-7723.html).
adriennek 09-12-2006, 01:50 PM When I first opened the arstechnica coverage, it said that the $250 iPod was going to be 60 gigs. Not that $50 less for 30 gigs is bad, it's just it was REALLY exciting when it was 60 gigs ;)

stan4d_steph 09-12-2006, 02:15 PM They probably won't update the U2 iPod then. Bummer.
Opus1guy 09-12-2006, 02:19 PM Gapless playback (#1 request according to Jobs)...
I asked this question in the other thread on this announcement, but in case nobody answers that one...just what the heck is "Gapless Playback" that was the #1 request? Thanks.
NEVERMIND. Someone just answered my question in the other thread.

Someone beat me to saying "playback without gaps"? :p
Just to confirm here, "Gapless" means no more little micro-pauses between tracks. If you are listening to live albums that have no pauses between tracks, the old ipods would have a quick little gap in the recoring whie switching tracks.
The Lovely Mrs. tod 09-12-2006, 03:40 PM Okay...so I can get a pink nano, 8 gigs. Twice what I've got on my mini, which is cool. But I'm going to have a hard time telling it from my pink RAZR in my bag.
Hmmmmmm
If only they'd make the 30 in colors. Everyone at my house carrys an iPod and the color thing does make it handy when you're unhooking one from the charger. As in "okay, black...'Little tod, your iPod's ready' "...
BUT...the new nano's store a bunch of pictures. Is the 30 gig still necessary for videos?

Is the 30 gig still necessary for videos?
Yes, the larger iPods (currently 30GB and 80GB) are still the only ones that play video.
adriennek 09-13-2006, 03:25 PM Re: 80-gig iPods -
The Apple Store at Irvine Spectrum indicated that they probably had them in the back but hadn't unpacked them yet.
The Apple Store at South Coast Plaza said they don't expect them until next week.
The Apple Store in Rancho Cucamonga didn't know what was happening but realized that they have the new Nanos so the guy put Doc on hold and came back to say that they don't expect the 80-gigs until next week.
All three have the new Nanos.
This would've all been much more convenient if they'd made their little announcement last week, thankyouverymuch.

RayChuang 09-14-2006, 08:19 AM I have a new 4 GB blue-colored metal-case Nano.
A couple of things I've noticed--first, the unit has excellent sound quality; second, the unit is lighter than my brother's older 4 GB first-generation Nano; and finally, the new case is far more scratchproof than the original Nano. The Apple Store in Sacramento told me they are expecting a shipment of protective cases designed for the new Nano coming in within a week or so.

They probably won't update the U2 iPod then. Bummer.Engadget is reporting (http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/22/on-the-dl-apples-u2-ipod-goes-5-5g-falls-to-279/) that the U2 iPod is getting the refresh and the price is dropping by $50 to $279.
