Atlantic City's Steel Pier closed for operation after seeing its last Labor Day yesterday. It has survived storms and heat, fire and neglect, and the throngs of thousands and thousands of visitors.

It's being razed for a condo/retail site. ~~sigh~~ Just what the world needs.

I am WAY too young to remember its hey-day, but according to my parents and grandparents, it was absolutely magical. For an admission of a nickle, you could see Frank Sinatra live, or Red Skelton, Milton Beryl. Pack in to scream laughter at the latest Abbott & Costello comedy, and then see them perform live. Dance at the dance hall. Watch the diving horse. Go 'undersea' in the diving bell (seeing little more than the murk of the sandy Atlantic, according to Dad -- no seamonsters or octopi). Ride the roller coaster. Win your honey a treasure at the midway.

I would have loved it 'in its day.'

R.I.P.

I saw that girl dive off on the horse, I must have been about six. Never forgot it though.
