View Full Version : WDW Marathon/Half Marathon Training Thread
stan4d_steph 08-22-2006, 08:53 AM Okay, the DL folks have one, so I thought I'd start one for the WDW runners/walkers!
I have just begun my training for the WDW marathon. I'm hoping to do the full, but I may have to do the half. I'm participating with Team in Training (see my .sig below!) so I have the luxury of waiting to decide until October.
Right now I'm starting out from essentially zero. I have been playing soccer 1-2x per week for a while now, so I have been working out, but I have no idea how far I run each game. My first group run of 4 miles went well though, so I'm feeling good. I'm doing an 8/2 min. run/walk.
Where's everyone else at right now?
TheChock 08-22-2006, 07:44 PM Oops... posted a while back in the DL thread, not realizing it was DL and not WDW.
I'm running in the half marathon, not with any team. I've been training for a little while now, and have been consistently doing 4 miles pretty easily. This weekend I am moving up to 5 miles!
stan4d_steph 08-23-2006, 09:12 AM No worries, TheChock.
Is this your first half marathon? This will be my first race. I'm a little apprehensive, so I'm glad I'll have a built in support system with TNT.

Wow, that's great, Steph! And I didn't know you got to wait until October. How cool is that? Just make sure when you make your travel reservations that you leave plenty of time on both ends so you don't get short-ended should you decide to do the half or full (since one is on Saturday and the other is on Sunday).
Most marathon training plans (including Hal Higdon's) assume you have a baseline of a full year of regular jogging before you start on the actual plans, but if you have been playing soccer, I'm sure that will help greatly. Plus, having the coaches train you in your Team in Training is a sure way to make sure you are conditioned on schedule.
Back when I was running more regularly, my normal workout was an hour's worth on the treadmill (anywhere from 5-6.5 miles). When I needed to, I incorporated some sprints in there and shortened it to about 45 minutes. For the half-marathon, all I needed was to do a few longer runs (upwards of 10 miles or so). For the full, though, the training has to be far more regimented. I'm sure the TiT (yikes! What an acronym!) people make sure the trainees put in their required 20-mile run. The toughest part of marathon training is having to do the reallllly long endurance runs. Those get kind of lonely, but they are necessary in order to be able to complete the entire marathon distance.

Thankfully, the long runs are planned for Saturdays when we do our group runs. It's voluntary to attend, but you're more likely to be with someone else for more of it than all alone.

Yeah, and it sounds MUCH better too. ;)
stan4d_steph 08-25-2006, 06:21 AM Ran about 3.5 last night with my usual run/walk. I really need to get a watch though. Using the clock on my iPod is non-ideal, since I have to keep looking at it.
I'm going to try to go 6 tomorrow for the group run. Hopefully I will be able to do it.

You mean, you KNOW you can do it! Positive attitude. You can do it!

I am pretty amazed at how I'm doing so far, so I will do 6 tomorrow, just for you grundler. ;)

Sweet! Knew you could do it! What's next?
mousedreamer 08-27-2006, 12:43 PM I also origianlly posted on the Disneyland thread. I did the 10 mile CRIM in Flint Michigan yesterday. It was my first race. The route was not flat at all, hill after hill, but with all the joggers, wogglers, runners, and walkers I felt like I fit in. I finished in 2 hrs and 20 minutes,at a 14.02 pace. My GPS said it was 10.25 miles. Maybe the hills made it read longer. I think there's hope for the 1/2 in January if I keep up the training. One thing that I thought odd was that I was passing alot of joggers even though I was only walking. I've always thought jogging was faster and that if I could jog some with the walking I'd have a better time. One thing for sure it was exciting, when I crossed that finish line it was great!! Something I'm sure I'm gonna want to do again.

GOOD FOR YOU!
OviedoFan 08-27-2006, 02:57 PM Nice to see a thread here for the races in January. I have run the Disney Half twice (2004 and 2005) and am now going for the full.
I used the months leading up to August to get myself into a consistent habit of running (5 days a week) and am now training in earnest. Just 18 weeks, 6 days and 12 hours until the marathon!
Did a 10 mile long run today in 2 hours. I do a run - walk combination that averages out to about a 12 min / mile pace. I run 4 min and walk 1 right now. I want to extend my runs to a mile before my walking break if possible. I am worried that in the latter miles I may slow down for my walking breaks and not want to get running again!
Does anyone have experience with run/walking an entire marathon?
Next weekend I am running the Miracle Mile 15K here in Orlando. This is a good time in training to run that distance, methinks!
Keep running!!

If you KNOW that you're going to have walking breaks, then try incorporating the aid stations with it. The aid stations are about 1 mile apart anyways so the jog a mile, walk the aid station route might work out. Check the course map for the actual locations of the aid stations. The aid stations are long enough that walking through them will be a good break.
Also, when you start early in the morning, it will be dark and cool. You don't need that many walking breaks that early. I'd say you might even go the entire first 10K (6+ miles) without a walk break. You'll slow down naturally at the water stops, but just motor on through.

You sound like you're getting pretty high in your long runs. Are you following a particular training plan? You don't want to peak too early or get injured.
Tink13.1 08-28-2006, 09:44 AM I'm also training for the full marathon after having completed the half last year. I train using run/walk - 10/1. During last year's half we didn't ever really get into a good rythym because the route was so crowded...it seemed like we would finally get into a pack of similar-paced runners when it was time for us to walk, so we would stretch the run for a couple more minutes. Ideally I would like to only walk the aid stations -but my real goal is just to finish upright (although I am not above crawling over the finish line if necessary)
I don't know if you've read any of Jeff Galloways books on walk breaks, but he empasizes that the walk breaks you take in the first few miles are actually the most important ones. They are the walk breaks that will keep your legs moving in the later miles, so I wouldn't suggest skipping any walk breaks in the beginning of the run. Of course over the next couple of months you'll have plenty of time to perfect your technique...we've got a lot of miles ahead of us!!
My longest run so far has only been a five-miler, but I felt really good (the day after too!) I'll go 6 miles this week once the kids are back in school (:crying: )

arthurvance 09-01-2006, 07:58 PM I did my first marathon at Disney World (http://arthurvance.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_arthurvance_archive.html) in January. For 2007, I'll be back doing the Goofy Challenge...both the 1/2 and the full.
Since I started doing walking workouts in 2001, I've very slowly progressed to being able to run further and further. I think walking/running is great. You can make lots of progress doing the combo.
Since the January marathon, I've continued running, but not to any schedule until I started back into serious training mode at the beginning of July with a 22 mile week. I've been adding an additional 2 miles each week. As long as I get in my planned run tomorrow, I'll complete this week at 38 miles.
So, I'm 8 weeks into my training.
scullerjay 09-01-2006, 09:51 PM Will be running the Goofy this year as the rest of my family [5 total] are running a combo of the 1/2 and full...oh ya, the oldest's boyfriend is doing the half too. Lured the entire family into running last year!
Ran my first Disney [and first marathon] in '94, then '96 and returned in '05 an '06 running for the Train to end Stroke program.after a long layoff from running. Hope to help my wife and my son towards their goals in the 1/2 and full.
Can't wait!
Jay
stan4d_steph 09-02-2006, 07:28 AM Only four miles today, but I ran the whole way. My running buddy with a similar pace was having back issues so I decided to run the 4 with her instead of the 6 I was expecting. I'll try to up my mileage a bit tomorrow to make up for it.
I am definitely getting a watch this weekend. I need something to help me keep track of when I'm supposed to be running and when I'm supposed to be walking! Anyone have one they want to recommend?
TheChock 09-04-2006, 02:04 PM I have been bad, haven't ran in over a week. Tomorrow school starts, and I plan on starting a much more regimented schedule. I will do 4-5 miles tomorrow, and then this weekend maybe move up to 6. I figure if I get up to 10-12 miles, I will be fine for the half marathon. In December I may try to do a 12-13 mile run just to see how it is, but I'm not sure yet.
Tink13.1 09-04-2006, 05:29 PM I did 6 miles yesterday and felt pretty good. I started using a heart rate monitor which really helps me keep my pace down. Once I stop paying attention I seem to pick up my pace and then burn out quickly...now I'm going slow and steady at about a 12:00/mile pace. Plus I wear my HRM on my right wrist, and my watch on my left...I tend to check the HRM quite often, and it keeps me from checking my watch. I'd love to run the full at a 10:00/mile pace (if only to be finished sooner!) but I'm trying to keep the training slow and steady....

You don't have a HRM that has a stopwatch as well?
stan4d_steph 09-05-2006, 08:53 AM You don't have a HRM that has a stopwatch as well?I don't have a watch at all! I need to get one, but I wasn't planning to get a HRM.
What watch/HRM do you have timl33?
