View Full Version : CF card for Canon Rebel dSLR?
jazzysmom 08-17-2006, 02:12 PM I got a 1 gb CF card to go with my Canon Rebel, and was wondering what size cards you guys use when you go for several days to the park? I won't be bringing my laptop on this trip, so I won't be able to download them daily. Suggestions? Thanks!!!

Wow, that really depends on how many pictures you want to take, and what format you store the pictures in. I carry two 2GB cards, and I off-load them to my laptop every chance I get. I know others here have used some sort of portable hard drive that allows you to off-load them without a computer, but I haven't tried such a thing. How long is your trip?

I also have the Rebel XT, and I have a one gig card. We stayed for 10 days and had to dump the card twice. If you're not getting another card, I recommend bringing your laptop to dump the card. I use my camera for work and Disneyland, and I can generally fit about 320 pictures on my card at a time. We opted to bring the laptop to dump the card instead of buying another card (kinda expensive) then locked the laptop in a wall mounted cabinet during the day (incase any sticky fingers made their way into our room.) Hope this helps

Bobcat 08-18-2006, 05:57 AM Good morning all....
I JUST purchased my Rebel XT along with a 1GB card (Newegg's prices are great if anyone's interested) I may purchase another 1GB just to be on the safe side. Normally we pack enough to go on vacation so I tend to leave the laptop at home.
Has anyone used a microdrive?
Also (sorry to go off topic) I'm new to the Rebel XT and can't wait to start using it, any of you veteran users of this camera care to offer any tips, ideas or must have accessories?
Take care and have a great day!

bradk 08-18-2006, 06:37 AM i've never heard anyone say anything good about a microdrive. they're extremely fragile and i think much more temperature sensitive.
i shoot with 2 2GB CF2s and I carry a portable digital wallet (directly reads CF2). I can get about 400-500 photos on each card using fine mode. I typically can shoot between 800-1200 photos per day, so i'm a bit extreme.
the only real point to having 2 cards for me is so when one is full (or close to), i can swap cards and continue to shoot while the first one is downloading to the device.

Thanks for the tip on Newegg, they do have good prices! I ordered a 2 gig card from them. Our trip is 3 days. I am hoping 3 gigs will hold me. We also have a bunch of 256's & 512's I can throw in. Origionally, my DH had planned to give me his 8 gig card, but it won't fit! Bummer!
bradk 08-18-2006, 09:03 AM i honestly wouldn't go above 2GB. the larger the size, the slower the card tends to be (1 GB is ideal, but just not as practical).
i've been using sandisk extreme iii and have been fairly happy.

I also use the extreme III.
Your statement about speed might be true across the same line, but the Sandisk Extreme IV 8 GB will out-perform my Sandisk III 2 GB.
I carry a portable digital wallet
Which one, and do you like it?
bradk 08-18-2006, 11:48 AM i've been through so many. because canon doesn't want to operate as a mass storage device :( right now, i use a sony 40GB storage device - HDPS-M10. it's a one button copy that reads directly from CF2/Microdrive and MS/Pro/Duo.
the positive is it works. the negative is it lacks a color LCD screen to view the photos on. this is something i've relied on in the past to verify the photos were copied, but the device (which does have a small mono LCD display) has been fairly good at reporting success or not. in fact, it will not auto shutoff if there was an error, which is good as long as you don't forget to check. a full charge (takes 4 hours to charge it) is supposed to last about an hour. i've never run out of time on it yet though, so it's fine. copies quickly enough.
the other item i found last time i shopped which has glowing reviews (and an LCD color screen) is the epson p2000, but it costs significantly more.
i had an archos that i loved, but i lost it at WDW :( and they no longer manufacture it. that's the problem with these devices, they come and go overnight.
i've also known of someone who found a portable CD recording device that records a CD directly from the card and has AV outputs and she was successfully able to record and view the CD on the disney resort tv to verify it transferred properly (this was at WDW - not all hotel tvs will allow this).
i actually purchased a toshiba laptop last night, which i expect to take on my trips and will offload photos at night, but i'll probably keep using the digital wallet: (1) because i can use it multiple times during the day and it's in my camera bag which my laptop wouldn't fit in and (2) for redundancy. should anything happen to either device, i'll have the other to fall back on.
actually, i might even upload my photos every day since all disney resorts at wdw have inroom broadband.

It's a great camera, and a lot of fun to use. I have a 1 gb CF card that gets me through the day, with a 512 back-up just in case. When I shoot in jpeg, both are suffice for day. However, I've started shooting in RAW which has me re-thinking my capacity.
As for tips - I've learned at WDW to set the exposure compensation to -2/3 or even -1. The glare off of the sidewalks and other reflective surfaces wreaked havoc on the camera's settings and my shots were constantly over-exposed. I think the same goes for DL. I had the exposure compensation set to -1 most days this summer and generally liked my shots much better. At night, indoors, or in low-light, I go back to normal.

Unless you shoot in RAW mode or take a very high number of shots, 1 gb per day will probably hold you - even at fine mode. DL does sell CF cards (at typical theme-park prices!) if you get desperate. There's also a Target (5 minute drive or so) not too far South on Harbor Blvd if you wanted to one at the last minute.
Also you can review and delete the obvious rejects (bad focus, poor framing) but I find I need the computer screen to really see if I want to delete the questionable shots.
