I'm thinking about buying another personel GPS to help me with my training. I had a basic navman that I liked but it stopped working and the warranty is over. I've heard alot of good about the garmin. There's so many models out there, I'd like some opinions on some good ones. Thanks

I have a four year old (?) Garmin eTrex Legend that I carry on mountain bike rides. Generally speaking, I like the unit and it's certainly helpful to have so we can explore trails in the woods without worrying about getting lost. However, if the woods are very thick (like they are this time of year), sometimes it can be hard to lock in a satellite signal.
mousedreamer,
What type of training? Cycling only? Running only? Hiking? Some of each? I have some good recommendations, but it depends on what you are looking to use it for.

Walking/jogging, training for 1/2 in January
So, for walking/jogging, I would highly suggest the Garmin ForeRunner 205 or the 305. The main difference is that the 305 comes with a heart-rate monitor. Unless you already have a HR monitor, I would go with the 305. In addition, if you decide you want to start cycling, you can use the 305 for cycling, and it even works with the optional cadence sensor for your bike. If you do go this route, I have some free software to recommend that is better than "Training Center" which Garmin provides. The only drawback is the cost, as it is a little on the pricey side.

I also highly recommend the Garmin ForeRunner. Fantastic device as along as you're training outside.

Do these track mileage? I'm already thinking about Christmas, and my MIL is so frustrated with her pedometer. How much do they run?

I just got one for $100 and I cant remember the name until I get home from work to look. It works great. No heart rate but it gives speed, distance and averages and calories. Its brand new and triangle shaped.
I just did an internet search adn found it
Navman W300 Sport Tool for Walking by Navman
they also haev a different one for running. Not sure why GPS would be different for that?

Depends on what you want. The Forerunner 305, which includes the heartrate monitor will set you back around $300. All of the GPS-based devices will track mileage.

Thanks for the input. I ordered the garmin 305 from Amazon.com last night. Better price than I thought $282.00 with shipping. Definitly a little pricey but from all the reviews I think I'll be happy with it. I had the navman W300 I loved it never had a problem until after about 4 months acted like it had moisture in the display and I couldn't read the numbers. But it did work great.
