NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAST CHANCE TO SEE AWARD-WINNING 'SHARKS: MYTH
AND MYSTERY' AT MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exhibit that features nearly two dozen species from around the world
will close September 4
They've sent thousands of shivers up thousands of spines, but now
they're leaving - and so soon it's almost scary. September 4 (Labor Day)
is your last chance to see the awesome sharks and rays - more than 20
species in all - in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's award-winning special
exhibition, "Sharks: Myth and Mystery."
Sharks and rays are not exactly party animals, of course, but the
aquarium is having a big going-away bash for them anyway. In fact, it's
so big that it's happening each and every weekend throughout August. The
celebration is part of the aquarium's "Year of Exploring," and kids can
get their Official Explorer's Passports stamped during one of the
weekend events.
So if you haven't seen "Sharks: Myth and Mystery" yet, or want to say
good-bye to a favorite shark, here's the line-up of special shows and
activities; all free with regular aquarium admission:
August 5 & 6: Entertainment by Kevin de Noto Steelpan Duo from noon to 3
p.m.; craft room activities between noon and 4 p.m.
August 12 & 13: Entertainment by Melange Jazz Duo from noon to 3 p.m.;
craft room activities between noon and 4 p.m.
August 19 & 20: Entertainment by the Bolero Brothers from noon to 3
p.m.; meet Maya & Miguel - the hip, 10-year-old twin stars of "Maya &
Miguel" on public television between noon and 3:30 p.m.; craft room
activities between noon and 4 p.m.
August 26 & 27: Entertainment by the Banana Slug String Band at noon, 1
and 2 p.m.; craft room activities between noon and 4 p.m.
"Sharks: Myth and Mystery" explores how cultures around the world
celebrate sharks and rays through art, dance, stories and other
traditions. It features a dozen different cultures and nearly two dozen
living species, including scalloped hammerhead sharks, African
catsharks, freshwater rays, southern stingrays and more. It also
includes touch pools, a craft room and several interactive displays.
In 2005, "Sharks: Myth and Mystery" earned the Exhibit Award as the best
new exhibit from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), and
also received the Munson Aquatic Conservation Exhibitry award, presented
annually by the AZA and the Charles and Edith Munson Foundation.
Additional information about "Sharks: Myth and Mystery" and August
events are available at www.montereybayaquarium.org.
The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of
the oceans.
