1. EXHIBIT NEWS: GIANT OCTOPUS, FLOWER HAT JELLIES, PREGNANT
SURFPERCH
A new male giant octopus, weighing about 14 pounds, has joined
the Octopus exhibit, on the side closest to the sheep crabs.
Although he's missing most of one tentacle and the tip of another,
he's healthy -- and over time he may even regenerate his missing
parts.
We received several flower hat jellies from our colleagues in
Japan, and they're now on exhibit in "Jellies: Living Art." This
unusual and mysterious species typically appears along the south-
eastern coast of Japan during May and June when the warm-water
Kuroshio Current runs close to shore. Little is known about flower
hat jellies, though our aquarists continue to try to raise them
throughout their life cycle so we can have them on permanent exhibit.
We're also partnering with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research
Institute to study the fluorescence in the jelly's tentacle tips that
seems to function as a lure to attract small fish.
Several dwarf surfperch in the Slough Pipefish exhibit are very
pregnant. Surfperch give birth to live young that are born tail
first. The pregnant fish will be giving birth soon, so keep an
eye out for fish with an extra tail!
Visit What's New on our web site to learn more about these new
arrivals in our exhibits.

2. AQUARIUM NEWS: CLIMATE CHANGE COLLABORATION,
BAY AREA PARENT AWARD
We're collaborating with Sea Studios Foundation to engage people in
seeking solutions to pressing environmental issues, starting with
climate change. You're invited to join us on Saturday, Sept.16,
for a 90-minute session. You'll see a short film about climate
change ("Strange Days on Planet Earth: The One Degree Factor")
and learn more about what you can do to make a difference. By
taking part, you'll give us important feedback that we can use
to engage others on this and other critical environmental topics.
Please register in advance for one of five sessions (10 a.m.,
12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m.) by contacting Paul and
Judy Myers at paulmy@comcast.net. All sessions take place in
Monterey at our Center for the Future of the Oceans,
100 Heritage Harbor (near Fisherman's Wharf). To learn more
about "Strange Days on Planet Earth," visit
http://www.pbs.org/strangedays/episodes/onedegreefactor/.
The aquarium is the "Best Place to See Animals for 2006"
according to a recent poll of families in the Monterey area
conducted by "Bay Area Parent" magazine. By winning this
"Family Favorite" award three times in a row, the aquarium
has also earned a spot in the magazine's Hall of Fame and will
be featured in its annual "Best of the Best" issue.
