I just got a hand-me-down Visor handheld and I need to know one thing... what should I Put on it? I still do not know how to justify its existence.

Head Over to www.freewarepalm.com , and get some free games and stuff for it. :)

You can also go to PalmGear (http://www.palmgear.com) to download stuff.

Since you got a Visor, start visiting Visor Central (http://www.visorcentral.com) for articles.

Obviously you want to make use of the primary apps that you get on your Visor. Enter in all your addresses, start including your appointments. You might want to download a few games, and maybe a database program (ThinkDB, MobileDB, etc.) and a word processing program if you want to write longer files than just the notepad that is available to you.

Congrats!

Lani's right about checking out the websites for free/share-ware. There is a ton of stuff out there, and after poking around the net for a while, I'm sure you'll find stuff that will be of use in one way or another.

Personally, I justify my Visor Pro's existance with the following software:

Core Programs:
- Address Book for storing all my contact info for work, MousePlanet, home, etc.
- DateBk4 (Pimlico Software) for synching up with my Outlook calendar for appts and to-dos.
- Memo for capturing wish lists, shopping items, and other stuff I used to write down on little sheets of paper.
- Documents to Go, Sheets to Go, & Slideshow to Go for providing mobile versions of critical pdf files (ebooks), Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint presentations

Work/Science Programs:
- Periodic table of the elements
- Molecular weight calculator
- Mass spectrometric isotope calculator
- RPN 3.04 scientific calculator (to replace my old HP 48)

Hobby Programs:
- Planetarium 2.1.1 for stargazing reference
- PocketSat for calculating visible satelite positions
- Scan Guide for radio scanning reference
- TealInfo for all sorts of little reference guides, like for my Yaseu VX-5R Ham radio
- Morse Pilot for Morse code training/practice for Ham licencing
- QuizApp for Ham radio exam training

Internet/News Programs:
- AvantGo for providing up-to-date info from the net

Utilities:
- X-Master for hack management
- BackupBuddy a must-have for disaster recovery

Games:
- Pocket Chess
- Rally 1000
- Sim City
- Liberty (GameBoy emulator)

I've also been exploring the possibilities of linking a Garmin 12CX GPS to my Visor and using them to do automated map navigation.

So, it all comes down to what you like to do and the software that can help you do what you like. :)

A nice list of software, but one question:

DateBk4 (Pimlico Software) for synching up with my Outlook calendar for appts and to-dos.

Last time I looked DateBk4 didn't sync with Outlook... Just reads the DateBook DB on the Palm.

Is this a new thing? Or are you talking about something else to sync with Outlook, like PocketMirror?

ha! jokes on you! I am a liscensed HAM radio operator. I had to pass the test to get an A in HAM radio class, so I did. I think it's Kg6bvh, but I doubt that's right.

Nothing new. You're correct; the app doesn't do the synching itself. The conduit between Outlook and the PalmOS is through PocketMirror, and I use DateBk4 because it ties the DateBook, Address and ToDo DBs together in a single, fairly slick package.

Cool. I purchased DateBk3 and upgraded to 4, but as I discovered, it's just 'too' powerful, and 'too' confusing to really get enough value out of. So I went back to the regular Datebook.

BTW, for those of you with Palm V's, look around for closeouts of products. In the last few days, I've picked up:

GPS for $50 (From an amazon.com vendor)
Palm V modem for $23 (NIB from Staples)
Palm V clipon keyboard for $12.00 (NIB from Staples, too)

I also noticed that Fry's has marked down most of their Palm V stuff..

Just curious, why do you need a program to sync your outlook and visor? Mine works just fine with the software that came with it.

I use Outlook 2000.

PocketMirror, which comes with the Visor Desktop software, provides the actual sync conduit for the Outlook <-> Palm transfer. DateBk 4 simply ties all the Palm PIM databases together in a nice package on the Visor.

there is a guy in my class who has a mini keyboard hooked up to his visor or palm (not sure which) and he takes notes for all his classes...instead of lugging around a laptop. I think thats how I can justify buying one that I so badly want hehe :D
