I have decided to take the unusual step of posting my weight info here for all to see. This will keep me even more motivated to bring those numbers iin line. Feel free if you want to throw your numbers into the mix...
Weight: 282.5 Pounds
Body Fat: 36.5 %
Lean Body Mass: 170.6 Pounds
stan4d_steph 07-06-2006, 08:59 AM How did you get your body fat percentage? I am interested in finding out mine, but I would like to get it done properly.
Well, it is probably not 100% accurate, but I am pretty sure the error is within a percentage point. The only truly accurate way is to do the immersion test, or the new low-grade x-ray test. Both have to be done at a clinic by a skilled technician. I have a scale that uses impedence to determine body fat. It correlates to the other tests pretty well, and is much better if you average your results over a week. However, it is more likely to give you bad readings if you are dehydrated, or over over-hydrated or just took a long bath. This is the scale I have:

It was $74.99 at the local Target...
(I think it is a slightly different model in the store, but it looks almost exactly the same)
Rhiannon8404 07-06-2006, 02:38 PM Ok, I'm brave. Also, I'm not one to worry to much about what others think of me. ;)
Current weight is 207.
Highest weight (March 05) 242.
Goal weight is 145-155 depending on how I look.
I wear a size 16.
I attend Weight Watchers, which is primarily responsible for the 35 lbs loss. I'm also walking 3x week and I work at a horse ranch 3x week.
TrekkieDad 07-06-2006, 05:17 PM I'm 5-7 and weigh about 154, the same as nine months ago. (I had lost 15 pounds the previous year.) BF% is 10-12%, with the scale set on "athletic." That's the setting you are supposed to use if you exercise 30+ mins/day. I spent 14 hours and 23 minutes on a bike over the last week for a total of 235 miles.
I wouldn't mind losing a few more pounds, since I still have a little flab around the middle, but I'm in no hurry. The weight loss was a side effect of a change in diet in order to control LDL levels. I gave up red meat primarily and avoid high saturated fat foods in general.
If I didn't ride so much, I'd probably have to be a lot stricter about how much I eat.
My main reason for the exercising is to improve my cholesterol and lower my blood pressure. I'm 5'11", and my weight has gotten out of control. My goal weight is 210, with another 15 pounds of muscle. I have lost some weight in the last five weeks when I finally got serious about cycling. I have no idea what I got up to since our old scale finally kicked the can, but I am kinda glad not knowing. I am guessing I was pushing three large.
Faith Trust & Pixie Dust 07-08-2006, 09:34 AM I am finally within the recommended weight range for my height...granted it's still at the high end, but it's a start. I now weigh 159 pounds and I'm 5'9". Until the last few years I was generally between 140 (too low for me--always hungry or exercising) and 155. My goal is to get down to about 150.
Wow, that was liberating!
cfitz/pirates 07-10-2006, 10:21 PM okay here I go 265lbs at 5'10 and what is weird my blood pressure and cholesteral levels are normal. My goal before my trip is 220.
cfitz/pirates 07-10-2006, 10:22 PM oops sorry my height is 5'7 I acccidently put in my DH height

Way to go, grundler!
I am impressed reading of all your bike riding. Not that you are doing it to impress me. :p ;)
Enjoy your bike ride this morning.
TrekkieDad 07-14-2006, 03:47 PM I did my last bike ride today before heading to Disneyland tomorrow. 42 miles, Wallace to Mokelumne Hill and back. On the way back, I ticked over 4000 miles for this year so far. I'll be off the bike for the next four days, but my legs will probably get sore from all the walking.
Almost forgot to mention my weight. After I got home and had lunch, I stepped on the scale before my shower, and it read 151.5--a new low. It's probably from slight dehydration, and I'm sure I'll be back up to my usual 154 real soon.

Thanks. It was a nice slow ride since my mom has a fixed gear cruiser bike. One of my other sisters showed up as well. Thanks too for the encouragement.

I would rather be in DL. 4000 miles is just awesome!
TrekkieDad 07-19-2006, 10:27 AM OK, I'm back. The trip to DL took my weight up to 158, but the extra pounds should disappear once I'm back in the old routine.

Weight: 277.4 Pounds
Well, my weigh-in this morning was the exact same as last week, which was a little dissappointing. However, because it fluctuates a lot day-to-day, I have been looking at the 7-day average (I weigh in every morning). Last friday, my 7-day average was 280.7.

Weight: 277.4 (down 0.0)
7-day average: 278.9 (down 1.8)
Rhiannon8404 07-25-2006, 05:23 PM Day-to-day weight fluctuations can be very frustrating. I know from weighing daily, that my weight can vary as much as 6-7 lbs in a day based on water retention and what foods I ate (ex. chinese food).
Good job on being down overall.
TrekkieDad 07-26-2006, 01:12 PM Well, I'm down a couple from last week's post Disneyland trip weight of 158. Weighed in at 156 today. Maybe it would have been lower if I hadn't had Chinese food last night. ;) So I should be back to my normal 154 in another week, right?
Despite the heat, I've managed to get in some bike rides. Yesterday 46.5 miles before noon. This evening I should roll out another 25. And I should get in at least 30 tomorrow morning.

You are making it hard to catch up! ;) What is your typical cadence? I've been working on getting mine up to the 80-90 range, but it is quite an effort at this point. I find myself falling back to 60.
This has been a bad week for me so far. I only have about 30 this week. I was going to go for a long ride this morning, but my daughter woke me up about 10 times last night, and I just couldn't get out of bed.
Well, I got in about 29 miles this morning. Rode a little slower than normal, but really concentrated on using lower gears and spinning faster. I maintained an average of 70 RPM for the two hours, and most of the time, that was about 75-80. It is going to take a long time to retrain myself in the 80-90 range, but I can see that it will pay off big. My average heart rate went up today, but my muscle fatigue is a lot lower than normal. Anyway, I am looking forward to my weigh-in tomorrow.

I've never quantified my cadence, and I don't have a computer that checks it. That being said, I do observe the apparent differences in cadence between myself and other riders about me, and I probably fall within 1 standard deviation. Sometimes I pedal faster, sometimes not.
Let me cite two extremes. Joe, whom I most freqently ride with, pedals with a very high cadence. He's also very thin (probably under 135 at 5-10), and it suits him well. But he will also shift to a higher gear, stand, and pedal slowly to give himself some variety. Seana, who is a reknowned ultra distance rider, typically pedals very slowly in high gears. I asked her why: Over long distances (500+ miles in a single ride) fewer pedal strokes means less chafing and fewer saddle sores.
My advice is that you should vary your cadence. Slower and harder strengthens your legs. Faster and easier is easier on the knees and improves endurance. I learned a great deal by riding with bike club members and copying their moves. Some things worked for me, others didn't. Now I'm told that others watch and follow me because my pedaling appears smooth, effortless, and efficient. (And I transition pretty well between a high and low cadence.)
Thanks for the info. I have the strong and slow down. I moved it up today and backed off on the gears, and my knees are thanking me for it. I had an ACL reconstruction on my left knee, so it concerns me when it starts aching.
