View Full Version : Double stroller advice for a big four year old and a two year old...
annieb727 07-04-2006, 10:51 AM I'm wondering if you have any advice - on kinds of double strollers (brands, etc)...I have a BIG four year old - he's about 48 lbs and can ride most rides at DL (height wise). We have a double stroller but it's falling apart and my four year old barely fits in it...so I'm wondering if you have any suggestions.
My two year old is little (only about 23lbs and still wearing 18 month clothes - some of which are still too big) LOL...so my main concern is having a seat that my four year old will fit in comfortably.
justlittleoldme 07-05-2006, 10:33 AM We have a Combi Twinn Savvy (its a side by side double) that my 5 and 2 1/2 year old fit in. It has two baskets on the bottom, drink holders, nice shade canopies and folds up really small with a carrying strap for the tram. I bought it specifically for Disneyland, and it works great. I believe the seats only go to 45lbs, that might be the only downside- but under the seat is plastic, so you might be able to get away with it. If not, most double joggers hold about 50lbs per seat, but they are bulky.
annieb727 07-05-2006, 11:23 AM does the side by side work well for navigating at DL? That was my only concern with a side by side, as opposed to tandem (though tandems are longer and the boys fight over who is going to sit in BACK LOL)...I think we could make due for a while with a stroller that is side by side...but i definitely want something that folds down easily
hersheythecat 07-08-2006, 04:23 PM Have you thought about taking two nicer umbrella sized strollers? I ask only because my kids are the same age apart and we found that it helped us a great deal at WDW. I made my 2 yo take a nap every day but only made my 4 yo take a nap every other day. So I was able to take the 2 yo back to the room by myself and get her a good nap to cut down on the meltdowns. The 4 yo and my husband were able to continue playing in the parks and just meet up with us at dinner.
babytmakes5 07-09-2006, 07:36 AM The last time we were at Disneyland we used two strollers. We brought our nice Combi umbrella-sized stroller for our 17 month-old to ride in, and we rented a stroller for our two older children to take turns sitting in (they were 3 1/2 and 5 years old at the time). It worked out great because our little one could be taken for diaper changes and naps while the other two children could enjoy the rides and attractions more. It was nice to have the option of splitting up if we needed to. The only thing I would have done differently is brought two strollers of our own, rather than rely on renting. The walk back to the DLH was too much for our three year old and it would have been nice for her to ride. HTH! :)
annieb727 07-09-2006, 08:43 AM using two strollers is a great idea, however, there will only be ONE person who can push the strollers...I will be using an ECV due to some pretty major foot problems ...so that's why a double stroller seems the best option for us
babytmakes5 07-09-2006, 12:20 PM Oh, Ok! I guess I would go with what one of the other posters suggested, which is the Combi Twin Savvy. It is an excellent stroller, and is much more narrow that some of the other side by side strollers. When my kids were smaller we brought our Twin Savvy with us everywhere and never had a problem maneuvering it, even in the tightest spots. We have owned two Twin Savvy's and they are wonderful, even for kids with differences in size. Well worth the price tag! Have a wonderful trip...:)
justlittleoldme 07-10-2006, 07:57 PM I believe the combi twin is the same width as a standard wheelchair. It fits through regular doorways, so its not that hard to push through crowds.
munchkinsmom0003 07-15-2006, 09:21 AM When my DD and DS were four and two, we bought a 2004-2005 Maclaren Twin Traveller (now called "Twin Techno") after "test drving" a bunch of other side-by-side strollers. We found the Maclaren sturdier than other brands we tried. It steers easily, even with one child riding in it and fits through all standard doorways. It also had the highest weight limit over all the others. My kids are now five and three and we still use it when we do day trips to the DLR or Legoland.
Just another stroller to consider. :)
annieb727 07-16-2006, 09:42 AM thanks for the great info!!!
DizChick45 07-16-2006, 06:12 PM Is your heart really set on a stroller for your big guy? Just asking as when our fella was 4, we didn't use a stroller at all - he did a great job walking with us.
The two year old is different story, but a single stroller is a heck of a lot easier for navigating in crowds.

I think it depends on each child. Our older child is fully capable of walking on her own, and at times she chooses to do just that. Other times she rides to conserve her energy so that by the end of our day at the DLR, she's not extremely tired and cranky. It's also nice to have both kids riding in our stroller when the crowds are huge because we know that our little ones won't get lost in the shuffle or trampled on.

This is the biggest reason why I still take two strollers to the parks. It is alot easier to push a stroller than have to worry about someone walking between you and your child and seperating you. For right now, this works for us. :-)

My 4yo still likes riding in the stroller and I really like having it for back and forth in the hotel. It also helps us get across the park faster and I don't have to worry about him getting seperated.
For my boys I have always taking my Graco DuoGlider. While it is big, I love the features. I had a dilemma for our trip this winter, whether to take it or 2 strollers. I have decided to take it, even though my son will be then be 5 and he is rather tall.
DuQuoi 07-22-2006, 02:16 AM We (2 parents, 3 kids ages 6+4(BIG)+2) just spend 4 days at DL/DCA in the midst of HOT july crowds with our double jogging stroller from Babies-R-Us, Baby-Trend brand. It's our 2nd trip with that stroller (previous ages 4+2+6mo) and the stroller was PERFECT!
I just walked slowly through the crowds which nearly always parted to go around me, otherwise I just stopped walking and waited for an opening. We'd park it in one area's stroller parking and "do the rides" around it, often leaving it parked for 1-2hrs. It was so nice to have it to hold everything (snacks, jackets for later, waterbottles, souvenirs, etc) and when the kids got tired or the little one needed a nap/crashed for the evening before park closed....we were ready! It made an awesome front-row viewing platform for the parades and fireworks and "held" our spot for the hour beforehand so dad could take kids on rides/get snacks and then be able to find me and still have a place just before show-time!
Occasionally in the crowds it was slow going and the first night at fireworks we didn't get there early and couldn't move through the masses, but a very nice cast member helped me lift it over into a grassy 'planter' area where we abandoned it until the crowds were gone. And sometimes we'd come back to the stroller parking area to find all the strollers moved, but never had a problem finding ours and hopefully always left it where it would NOT be a problem for other guests or staff.
It folded up easy to go on the Monorail (we stayed in the DL Hotel), the airport-to-hotel shuttle bus (Disney Express) and I was even able to gate-check it on the airplane and get it through security w/o any hassels. It fit into the doorways and elevators and through the gates at DL, but not over at DCA--had to go over to the side "truck entrance" and wait for a cast member--until my husband and I got smart and just LIFTED it over the 1/2 inch too narrow entrance gate! Much quicker than waiting for the 'truck entrance' to be opened.
With the 3rd child, we were able to put one up on top of the handle/canopy on the long walk back to the hotel at midnight after being out all day, while the other two snoozed below. At other times when they were all awake and wanting to ride, we'd double stack the little one on the biggest one's lap/feet.
And on the 3rd day when my pregnancy-swollen feet couldn't take the heat anymore in the hot pier area of DCA--the stroller made a great wheelchair for my husband to whisk me off to the first-aid station for bandaids and ice-cold washclothes!
My twice-proven recommendation-- take the big double, use it wisely and courteously in the crowds, and enjoy the ride!
lauras5boys 07-22-2006, 02:07 PM The Avalon from Burlington Coat Factory is the best double umbrella ever. I used it with my twins but my older one (he's 19 months older) often rode in it as well. Since the 4 year old probably won't be needing the stroller for much longer you may want to go the cheaper route. It's only $70, has a canopy, 2 baskets, reclining seats and straps that can be used as 5 point or lap only. It folds very easily in half, easy and light to carry and very sturdy. We loved it.
coach's wife 07-24-2006, 08:51 AM Just wanted to put a suggestion out. Have you ever heard of a sit and stand stroller?! I run a daycare, so needless to say I have children of many ages. The sit and stand is wonderful. I use it alot for my own 2 children (ages 5 and 13 months). This way she (my youngest) can ride and whenever my oldest wants to walk he can and when he gets tired he just hop on. The place in the back (the part for the older child) gives the option for sitting or standing.
Just a thought. Heck if anyone has used this at DW and found it didn't work well please let me know since I plan on using it in Dec. when we go.
Good Luck! Have fun
hg0079 08-01-2006, 09:37 AM Sit and Stand are awsome
the older one can sit or stand on the back

mulansgirl 08-03-2006, 01:01 PM I saw one of these sit and stand strollers at disneyland and my Sister-in-law thought it was the greatest idea. I was going to recomend it but someone beat me to it. I think this might be your best bet.
they also sell them at target:

hg0079 08-03-2006, 02:10 PM just today at Tacobell we saw one of these strollers they sure are getting popular (sit and stand.)
I just can't stand the people who's kids are too young to be in the back with out the strap on and they jump out and run run run and refuse to get back on.
