Wade Sampson's article about the "Original Pleasure Island" reminded me that there was a Pleasure Island theme (or amusement--not sure about the theming) park by the creator of Freedomland USA in the Bronx.
While I'm sure that many of you know about Freedomland, I was fascinated to recently learn about this elaborate East coast Disneyland rip-off that existed in the early 1960s. If you Google "Freedomland USA Bronx" you will get sites that show photos of a large, expensive park that obviously borrowed from Main Street USA, POTC, various boat attractions, and about a dozen other Disneyland attractions. Themeparkreview.com showed an Asian park that stole charcters from Disney, but Freedomland USA was even more blatant--yet I wish I could go back in time and visit it.
P.S. Do any of you remember visiting Freedomland USA in the Bronx in the early to mid 1960s, and if so, how did you like it?
