View Full Version : tips on keeping 4 y.o. girl & 16 mo. old boy occupied...
four4disney 06-23-2006, 03:35 PM on our 2 1/2 hour flight to DLR & then in the lines for the rides. [going in Sept]
Our last trip was when our DD was 2. Now we'll have two kiddies...and my DD's favorite phrase is "what's taking so long?" I plan on taking some new toys/books [small] to kill time but looking for some other ideas...creative ideas.
Moms & dads, I need a refresher course. Thanks!
lauramaynot 06-23-2006, 10:11 PM When we had very little ones we would bring snacks. Cheerios, little marshmellows, goldfish...ect. I have also brought a squirt bottle/fan thing because it was great for cooling off and occupied the kids (anything double duty is great) I also like to get glow sticks for evenings. I get mine in the camping section at walmart for a buck a piece. A previous poster suggested a small bottle of bubbles which I think would work great.
On planes I usually go for the snacks and color wonder coloring books and markers. They aren't messy and don't melt like crayons so much better for travel.
junglemom 06-24-2006, 08:13 AM I have brought little bubble bottles. The wedding sized ones fit great in your purse or bag. If you are in a closed area I would check with the guests around you to see if they mind bubbles blowing around them.
I have seen other kids with travel sized games.
Have fun.
WDW heart 06-25-2006, 09:26 AM 16 month old - SNACKS, try to time it so he is hungry for the flight, get a bag of cheap, small, new toys and bring them out one at a time when his interest wanes with the first. maybe try to time it so he may take a nap.
4 year old. We play a great game with our kids in the car, at resterants, planes. It's like 20 questions only with animals. One person thinks of an animal. The others take turns asking yes or no questions about the animal until someone guesses it. We still do this today.

Have them make edible jewlery. Take little bags of fruit loops, cheerios, or (don't let the pediatric dentist read this), those gummy-type lifesavers. The kids can string them on those thin licorice strings. It's a fashion statement and a snack. I second Color Wonder kits, but also try those scratch art sheets, which are all black, and they scratch them with wooden sticks, to reveal the color. Also inflatable beach balls, which fold down to nothing in luggage, but can be blown up to play, in the hotel room, etc.
four4disney 06-25-2006, 08:47 PM Thank you! Great ideas! Never under estimate the power of snacks! =) Edible necklaces...that's good...
lauramaynot 06-26-2006, 07:08 PM Hey I saw a great idea on another board today. One mom always packs paper to fold origami (sp?). That way she can "make" her own toys (boats, airplanes, hats ect.) for her kids when they are at the airport or on a train, then she just tosses them when they reach their destination.
junglemom 06-26-2006, 09:47 PM Thank you! Great ideas! Never under estimate the power of snacks! =) Edible necklaces...that's good...Dum Dums are the greatest!!! Small enough to finish quickly if needed.
MommyTo2Boys1Girl 06-28-2006, 12:09 AM I buy new books and small toys each time we fly.
I got these great travel Mr. Potato Head games, they are electronic, at Toys R Us. They are wonderful for on the plane!
We never have anything to occupy the boys, now almost 3yo and 4yo, while in line for rides, the oldest has been going to DLR since he was 13 months. Thankfully we plan our trips during the less busy time and just talk about the rides to pass the time, the lines aren't really long enough to need activities to keep them occupied.
going2disneyAZ 06-29-2006, 01:17 PM Portable DVD player their favorite Disney DVD(s). [Toy Story for us]
adriennek 07-05-2006, 07:49 PM I have an appeal on behalf of other parents and kids in line: If you're bringing things like squirt bottle fans and bubbles, please be aware of the people around you.
One time I was in line with a baby and a couple of women thought they were the bee's knees with their squirt bottle fans. They were walking up and down the line squirting EVERYONE, as if they were doing us a favor. I did NOT want my baby to get wet! My friend and I were trying to cover him while my friend tried to get the women's attention to STOP ALREADY. At a Fourth of July parade yesterday, one group was squirting people and my 2-year-old was VERY unhappy.
The same goes with bubbles. In some lines it will be easy to direct the bubbles away from the crowd, but in many lines, especially in Fantasyland, it's not. I generally ask the people around me if they mind, just to be safe. :)

karliebug 07-07-2006, 01:59 PM pipe cleaners are great fun and quiet. You can make all kinds of people and animals out of them. Magna doodles are great too. A portable dvd player would be wonderful if you can swing it.
Mrs. GusMan 07-24-2006, 04:44 PM one of our favorite activities on the bus or in line is "What Disney Character Am I?" One person thinks of a character and the other family members ask yes or no questions to guess the character, very smiliar to "What animal am I". We have fun with this. Our daughter picks really hard characters and we usually wind up with questions like "does the first word start with an A, B C?"
Might be too hard with your little one, but your 4 year old may enjoy thinking of Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Pluto, and the princesses.
I think others had great ideas for your little boy. Snacks make wonderful learning tools. He can practice counting cheerios, identify the color of fruit loops, or match the color of m & m's to Mickey's shorts.
Enjoy your trip!
Mrs. GusMan:)
coach's wife 07-24-2006, 07:42 PM I can't take credit for this idea, someone told me about it. For the airplane ride get those window cling ons (ya know the ones they have out at different holidays for a buck at Walmart) and stick those on the windows. OK, I don't know if it really works but I thought when someone told it to me it was a great idea.
Some creative ideas listed, I think I'm going to try some when we go.
ThemeParkAddictOfOC 07-25-2006, 01:22 AM I make up endless Disney trivia questions for the kids. I also let them ask me questions and play along.
Example:
Who does Mulan fight against in the movie to save China?
Name the seven drawfs.
Who is buzz's enemy?
What is the name of Woody's horse in Toy Story?
What is Stanley's goldfish's name?
What does Winnie the Pooh like to eat?
Nothing tricky.
mkraemer 07-25-2006, 08:32 AM When my kids were little and we traveled on the plane (and we have some delay horror stories)...we always brought along an activity bag.
New toys (or toys that live only in the activity bag and aren't seen often) are always great. I get some of the bags of incredibly cheap dinosaurs or other plastic figures (somehow, after Toy Story, little green army men were a big hit), and the kids love to use the tray tables to play with them. If one drops, oh well!
Another favorite with my kids (and often with kids who sit near us) are party-sized containers of PlayDoh. You can get these little jars o' doh in a tube (the sellling idea is to have a small something to put in birthday party loot bags), and they are SO fun for little hands on the plane. (I'm not so sure how much the airline staff loves the doh, but my rule of thumb is that they prefer pretty much anything to restless kids.)
For a 2.5 hour flight, I would often use my laptop on the plane for movies. I take along a bungee cord and fasten it to the tray table (doesn't get knocked over or bumped with turbulence). I have a splitter jack for the headphones and voila! Everybody is pretty happy.
Snacks are highly recommended, as well as something to drink for takeoff/landing.
lauras5boys 07-25-2006, 09:14 AM My boys are 6, 4 year old twins and 19 months. On our trip to Disney World in April I packed a bunch of stuff for the plane and they used none of it. They were happy as can be watching the little TVs and movies on the plane. I did pack some extra snacks (especially for the baby). The best thing I did was I made the baby skip his nap so he slept most of the time on the plane. Worked like a charm.
One thing they did play with on the ride back was the gameboy and Leapster.
We go to Disneyland often (3 times this past week) and we've never needed anything for lines. We do ususally plan what we will go on next durning the line or what we will eat for lunch and that's usually enough.
four4disney 07-25-2006, 10:53 AM These are great! I'm actually looking forward to the plane ride! We've got 45 more days to go. :)
