Thea Awards Announced, Walt Disney’s Tokyo DisneySea,
Animal Kingdom Lodge, and California Adventure’s Disney Animation and Soarin’ Over California Honored

April 23, 2002, Burbank, CA--“Through their work in themed entertainment and experience design projects, our members tell a story, capture our hearts, and let our imaginations fly free,” said Keith James, President of the Themed Entertainment Association in announcing the 2002 Thea Award Honorees for Outstanding Achievement. “This year, we are pleased to honor Disney with four Thea Awards for Outstanding Achievement: the Disney Animal Kingdom Lodge for Themed Hotel; for Attractions, both Disney Animation and Soarin’ Over Calfornia at California Adventure; and for Theme Park and Entertainment, the Oriental Land Company’s Tokyo DisneySea in Japan.”

Established in 1994, the Thea Awards recognize excellence in the themed entertainment and experience design industry, an industry that harmoniously blends a combination of disciplines to create theme parks, entertainment attractions, science centers, aquariums, zoos, museums, live shows, corporate brand lands, exhibits, family entertainment centers, huge event spectaculars and themed restaurants and retail stores. Through these venues and events, TEA professionals -- writers, producers, designers, artists, architects, technicians, engineers, directors, choreographers, educators, operators and economists -- tell stories that engage visitors and participants in experiences that were once only available through myth and legend.

“The works our members create are among the most recognizable and familiar. Everyone knows the zoos and aquariums, attractions and museums, theme parks, special events and more that we have built. This year, TEA has chosen to honor an elite representation of the hundreds of projects and thousands of people who have brought smiles to children’s faces and made grown-ups feel young again.,” said James. “We are an industry filled with special people and projects, and we honor Disney and their partners for their exceptional contributions to our industry and the world.” The complete list of honorees for the 2002 Thea Awards includes:
