Well, my trusty digital camera is finished. I absolutely loved it! It was a Canon and I have used it many times over the last 4 years. Now I need to buy a new one and I need your help, what do you have? What do you recommend? I want something not too big and less than 500 dollars.

We have a Nikon Coolpix P3.

It has wireless connecting capabilities, which was the deciding factor on this particular model of Coolpix.

Doc also wanted something that uses a rather standard memory (I think it's an SD card?)

It is probably overpowered - it's 8.1 megapixels.

I'm still adjusting. I miss how quickly a regular camera just takes a darn picture. ;) But I'm learning to love it.

Adrienne

Edited to add: It's a nice size, it was just under $500 and my Canon Rebel was my first non-Nikon camera. I had to replace it because the shutter button broke. It's just not that old to be so broken. So back to Nikon we ran!

I have a Kodak camera and I like it. It's easy to use. I would recommend you check out Consumer Reports reviews in addition to the feedback you get here.

Thanks! I found a great website that has extensive reviews of each camera plus a great consumer feedback section.

I'd recommend getting one that uses the same kind of memory card as the old one.

I have (and have previously recommended (http://mousepad.mouseplanet.com/showthread.php?p=846265&highlight=canon#post846265)) a Canon PowerShot S2 iS. It uses SD cards and is pretty good with battery life. Over our recent cruise it served me quite well.

I have an HP that I'm pretty happy with the 'next picture' speed (when the batteries are freshly recharged). My sister liked mine so much when they visited me a year ago, her husband and kids got the same one for her for Mother's Day that year. That speed, along with pixel size, price, and dimensions were the biggest considerations when I was looking at mine.

I'm wondering if yours might be faster, Adrienne, if you went to a slightly lower resolution than the default 8 MPixels, when you wanted to be faster? Mine is in the 5 MPixel range and I blew up a picture to 16x20 and it's still really clear.

We love our Nikon. See here. (http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25533) For us since we vacation just the two of us a lot, we love being able to trun the lens around to take pictures of ourselves.

Thanks for all the advice and the link to the other thread. I am checking it now.

Oh yeah, we did that, LOL. My thing is that sometimes when I push the button it doesn't take a picture. At this point, I haven't taken time to really learn how to use it so I'm blaming user error

my first was a Canon Powershot S400
my second was a Canon Powershot S500
my third was a Canon Powershot SD550

a previous poster has a good point in buying a camera that you might already have extra batteries and memory for.

i also get the extended warranty and seem to get the best point-n-shoot Canon on the market. The SD550 is less than $500 and is 7.1 Mpixel. works great for about evything except indoor sporting events.

I also have the Canon Powershot S2IS. I just bought it this week and I gotta say I love it, I really do! This is my very first digital and I researched and agonized for weeks. I thought about getting the S3IS, but couldn't justify the price difference for minor upgrades. I really like the way it fits in my hand. I have small hands, but with the subcompact cameras I held, they just didn't feel right. I felt like I would have my finger over the lens more often than not.

Nursemelis,

As a previous Canon user who strayed to use Panasonic and Kodak, and now wants to get back to Canon, I say to not only consider your media, but also how the software looks & feels. I LOVE my Lumix, but it doesn't do thinks like automatic rotation that Canons do, or instant sync with most systems.

Another fabulous website for checking and comparisons is dpreview.com

Andrew - I wish I had bought the S2 IS, but how is it for burst mode and fireworks shots? My Lumix excels with that, but it's tired and needs to be replaced.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've used virtually none of the features of the S2 iS. I'll have to try the burst mode and low-light stuff at some point.

I used the fireworks mode on a fiberoptic light toy my daughter has. We had it outside for a brownie sleepover. It worked great. So I am sure it would do the same for fireworks, just make sure you are steady or have a tripod. Here it is, I had to cut the pixel size to fit it on here, it is much clearer on my computer. The wind is blowing it just a little so it made those worm figures.

JM - that's in complete darkness? How cool is that!

Andrew - I am stunned. Now get out there this weekend and do your homework! :p (hehehee, just kidding!)

Another very happy S2IS owner. We've had it since about Sept of last year. We really like it. We dont use a lot of the features. It seems to take great pictures in "auto" mode. I did try the firework mode at DL ealier this month. I didnt have a tripode, so they didnt turn out very good.

Has anyone used the Kodak EasyShare C663 Digital Camera?

It's on special at Costco next week for $199.99 and seems to be decent. I don't do anything fancy with my pictures...just take them, print them, put some in photo albums/scrapbooks, send some to family.

Thoughts?

Well, I didn't get that EasyShare since I really didn't "need" another camera at the time. However, my APS camera just died, so I'm ready to jump into the tiny pocket/purse-sized digital arena now.

My budget is around $200-250. I like the Canon A620 and A540. They seem to have features I'd use...I especially like the 4x zoom vs. the 3x zoom on slightly more expensive models.

Someone had mentioned a site that gives good camera reviews...could someone link that for me again please?

Any thoughts or recommendations for that price range?

Thanks!
