View Full Version : Sunscreen recommendations?
Hey there - heading for DLR end of May/early June so I know the kids will need sunscreen. I was just wondering if anyone had a brand to recommend? I have a v. wriggly 1 YO boy and a 3 YO "princess." We plan to use the hotel pool in the afternoons, too. Any help appreciated - thanks!
tmptink 05-16-2006, 11:03 AM I used the Banana Boat Mist Spray 50 last week and only had to apply once but we did not go in a pool or anything. My dd did not get burnt at all. She is as white as a gost. I like the smell too. It smells like bubble gum or something like that.
My wife knows better than I about what brands to use. I did want to point out though, that if you are at the resort without, they sell sunscreen in DCA at Greetings from California.
jennia 05-16-2006, 06:57 PM My advice with little ones that young is to get the Coppertone Water Babies or another brand that is made FOR small kids. Having had sunscreen get in my eyes a few times in my life, let me tell you that is something you don't want to happen during your day at DLR. We always use a SPF 45 for everyone young and old. After a few visits to the park I end up with a nice tan even WITH my sunscreen!!! :)
Koala Gurl 05-16-2006, 07:42 PM The Banana Boat sunscreen for kids now says, "As gentle as water." Not that I have gotten sunscreen in DDs eyes, but it makes me feel better (since I HATE it when I put on sunscreen and I sweat or get in the water and it goes in my eyes!) Smells good too!
I get the spray kind and put it in my hands first, then apply. Quicker than the lotion and it seems to work just fine.
adriennek 05-16-2006, 08:20 PM I hate sunscreen. The smell of it makes me ill. That's why I love the spray. I can spray it on the kids and let them smear it in. I supervise to make sure it gets everywhere it needs to go, of course. We have used the Coppertone Water Babies (pink bottle) and the Coppertone spray in the blue bottle.

munchkinsmom0003 05-16-2006, 08:45 PM Here's what our family uses:
Banana Boat Quick Dry Sport Sunblock Spray SPF 30 (http://bananaboat.com/products/10704.aspx?cat=4&curBrowseBy=Usage)
We have the pump spray version, but I saw on the website that they now have the continuous mist spray version for this sunblock. We usually put the liquid on our hand, then apply, just like Koala Gurl does. It's definitely a lot quicker to apply than the lotion.
HTH!
Shinku 05-16-2006, 08:48 PM I like the kind with the colored tint (coppertone kids perhaps?) because then I can see where it goes and where I've missed instead of the white-ish or clear-ish kind where it 'melts' away too fast.
Stick with a brand you've heard of before (coppertone, banana boat, something to that effect). Make sure it has UVA and UVB protection. Make sure it's waterproof/sweatproof, even if you're not going into the pool you'll tend to wipe your brow or whatever and accidentally wipe it off. Make sure it's at least spf 15, 30 is better.
This is great -- thanks so much, everyone!
stan4d_steph 05-17-2006, 09:21 AM My nephew has sensitive skin, so my sister uses Neutrogena's sunscreen.
heidiwhr 05-19-2006, 05:47 PM We always use Water Babies SPF 50. They are doing a promo now where a travel-sized bottle comes with the big bottle, which is prefect for keeping in the diaper bag or my purse. I love having it so handy!
Jwebbal 05-20-2006, 09:21 PM We use waterbabies usually, but we use the sunblock sticks for faces only on the face. Keeps it from getting in your eyes and stays on a long time.
DizChick45 05-21-2006, 02:32 PM The stick is also great for the backs of necks and ears :)
clownchk 05-23-2006, 06:16 AM Don't forget to use sunscreen on the parts of hair!! Nothing like having to comb a kid's hair with blisters in the parts!!

heidiwhr 05-24-2006, 08:35 AM Or wear a hat. :)
I was thinking the same thing. I have my kids wear a bucket-style hat while in the sun. I even found a tiny one at Gymboree to fit my 2 month old for our DL trip earlier this month.

Of course, that only works if your child will actually wear a hat. Our 2 1/2 year old absolutely refuses to wear a hat. In fact, we haven't been able to get a hat on him since he was 6 months or so.

junglemom 05-29-2006, 03:41 PM For my SIL's buisnesses sake I must put in my vote for the healthy non-carcenogenic Arbonne skin care products. It does work Fabulous! I use the adult version and use the baby care line on my kids.
