Last night, at 2:30 am, a crowd gathered on the Las Vegas Strip to watch the Boardwalk Casino tower implode. About 170 lbs of explosives took the building down in just a few seconds.
The Boardwalk Casino featured a fake rollercoaster and parachute ride facade, along with a big clown's face. It was located just north of the Monte Carlo and south of the Bellagio. It was originally a Holiday Inn and built in the late 60's.
The entire 66 acres, from the Monte Carlo to the Bellagio, is being developed by MGM-Mirage-Mandalay into a $7 billion "City Center" mixed use complex.
Also this year, Castaways and Bourbon Street buildings were imploded. The Stardust has a year left before it is dropped to make way for a new $4 billion complex; and both towers of the Tropicana are expected to be dropped once the bidding war over the holding company Aztar (AZR) has been settled.
