1. EXHIBIT NEWS: NEW ORLEANS PENGUINS & OTTERS TO RETURN HOME,
OCEAN SUNFISH UPDATE
The good news is that the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in
New Orleans plans to re-open before Memorial Day. The bad news
is we need to send back its 19 penguins and two sea otters! So,
if you’ve become as attached to these animals as we have, be sure
to visit before mid-May (exact departure date TBD) and say
good-bye and good luck to these charming animals. The penguins
are with our colony in “Splash Zone” and Emma the sea otter is
with our exhibit otters; Buck the sea otter is behind the scenes.
Our ocean sunfish is growing very fast. It weighed less than 40
pounds when we introduced it to the Outer Bay exhibit on
November 23, 2005. Our staff now estimates its weight at between
125 and 150 pounds! The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) is the largest
bony fish in the world. It starts out life as a teeny tiny fry
but can grow to be huge – about 3,000 pounds. Ours is healthy
with an appetite to match – each day it eats about four pounds
of squid, hoki (cod) and gel squares full of vitamins and other
nutrients. It’s trained to recognize a target – a red ball –
floating on the surface, which means it’s time to eat. You can
watch it being fed at about 10:30 and 3:30 daily. But also keep
an eye on it during the main Outer Bay feedings four times a
week – it’s the first ocean sunfish we’ve had that braves the
tuna feeding frenzy to get itself another dozen squid or so.
You can see some of the feeding activity on our Outer Bay Cam.

4. CONSERVATION IN ACTION: TAKE ACTION EXHIBIT
Creating a network of marine protected areas off the Central
Coast is our top conservation priority in 2006. To help in
the effort, we've created a new Take Action exhibit in our
Outer Bay galleries to raise awareness about why we need
to do more to protect marine life and coastal habitats.
When the exhibit opens on May 12 you'll be able to learn
more, and send a postcard to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
urging him to support the strongest possible network of
marine protected areas. You can also sign up and become a
member of our Ocean Action Team – joining a group of folks
like you who care about the future of the oceans, and who
want to stand up and speak out so your voices can have the
greatest impact. You can learn more and sign up now for our
Ocean Action Team.
