Has anyone been involved with Team in Training?

I've signed up for an information session with them. I'm interested in the group aspect, to meet people and keep me motivated.

How is the fundraising aspect?

A friend of mine did Team in Training and she had a GREAT experience. She did a century bike ride. They trained together regularly, and had excellent guest speakers who taught them about race nutrition, injury prevention, etc. I don't know how much she had to fundraise, she sent letters out to lots of people and didn't seem too stressed about the money aspect.

While I am not involved in Team in Training, I did John Bingham's Columbus Distance Classic yesterday. This was my very first half marathon, so I was all eyes and ears not wanitng to miss anything. I noticed a number of Team in Training folks in this race and they seem to be very well supported by each other, coaches, family, etc. Our Sunday morning news profiled one of the Team members and noted that the entire group raised over $105,000 in yesterday's race. Wow!

Good luck to you!

They make up one of the largest fundraising groups represented at the WDW marathons. They always wear their purple tank tops, and are usually referred to as the "GO TEAM IN TRAINING" and "GO PURPLE PEOPLE" people on the course.

Sounds like a good organization. I may participate with them for the WDW half, but the info meeting if for the Adirondack half in Sept.

Thanks for all the insight. :)

My wife and I ran our first marathon with Team in Training at Disney in January '05. It was a life-changing experience. When we signed up I had not run a mile in my life. A co-worker of mine was signing up and asked if anyone else on the team was crazy enough to do this with her. I wanted to get into better shape, and my father-in-law had leukemia so the cause was right. We had an excellent coach, organized training runs, and very touching motivational speakers. In just over four months we went from couch potatoes to marathon finishers. The most touching moment was when we gave our medals to my wife's father. He passed away last year, and we did Goofy in '06 with Team in Training in his memory.

Through Team in Training we have raised money for a very good cause, developed friendships that will last a lifetime, gotten into the best shape of our lives, and developed a crazy addiction for endurance sports. In September I will be completing an iron-distance triathlon. Disney '07 will be my 9th marathon, and my 3rd with Team in Training.

My story is similar.

I did the Honolulu marathon with Team in Training 10 years ago. When I'm asked, "What is your greatest accomplishment?" I tell the story of my experience with TNT. I was not a runner and ran two miles straight for the first time in my life at one of the first weeks of training.

There are so many positive aspects of doing a marathon this way. The friends you make will keep you coming to practice. The person you will be training in honor of will remind you of the importance of the cause. The team spirit you'll feel during the race will keep you going to the finish line.

The fundraising seems very scary at first, but follow the advice you get from the training and get over your fear of asking people. So many people will love to help and you will hear stories of how Leukemia has touched so many lives.

I'm currently training to do the Disneyland half marathon with another group called Train to End Stroke and this time around the fundraising has been a breeze.

I really hope you decide to do TNT, it truly was a life changing experience and something I think everyone should experience.

Thanks for the info. everyone. If I don't chicken out, there's a meeting next week I'm supposed to attend, then we start training the week after that!

I just went to an information meeting for TNT last week, and one of the races we can choose is in Disney World in January. I don't even like to run any more, but after that meeting I've been able to think of little else. I don't use message boards much, but I am trying to find out all I can about the Disney race so my husband and I can decide whether to choose Disney and take our two very small children or if it will be too hard on them dragging them around. If you choose to join the group, good luck!

Did you make it to the meeting, or has it not happened yet?I made it to the meeting! I plan to give it a go. The people there were very nice and honest about the challenge. There is tons of support to help with every aspect. Our training kickoff is next Wednesday. :)

First training run last night went well. I went with the run/walk crew to start out. We did 5 minutes running then 5 minutes of walking. It went fine, and I think I could probably do more running and less walking. I will probably try it out on my own to see how it goes. :)

Thanks for all the support everyone! My first weekend group run went well and I found some others in the group who are running a similar pace. I also have my website set up. Baby steps! :)

Bumping this to find out if there are any more Team in Training people out there? I know some groups have just started last weekend. I'm in the Capital Region/Vermont Chapter.

stan4d_steph, I just ran the Disneyland half and feel inspired to take on a full next. I really like the idea of doing it for a greater cause than just my ego. There's a TNT info meeting in my town (Simi Valley) this coming Saturday and I plan to go.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Now that you've been at it a while, what do you think of the training plan? How far did you run on your last group outing?

Now that you've been at it a while, what do you think of the training plan? How far did you run on your last group outing? The training plan is good. I like having something to follow, since otherwise I would not have much of an idea what the heck to do!

Last weekend I ran/walked 6 miles. This week I am taking off from running because of an ankle sprain (from soccer, which is now FORBIDDEN!). I'm doing elliptical instead. I'm supposed to go 9 miles on Saturday, but it will probably be less as far as elliptical equivalent. I will still end up likely having to do about 2 hours on the thing! EEK! I keep telling my ankle to get better soon.

Sorry to hear about the ankle sprain. I can run for hours, but I'm done in after a few minutes on the elliptical machine. I can't imagine 2 hours of it, but I'm positive it will be a great workout. Congratulations on your 6 mile run/walk, that is a big milestone on your way to 13.1. Good luck with your recovery!

stan4d_steph,
Reluctant DG and I hit that meeting last weekend, thanks to him seeing your tag line on the boards. We are starting training for the LA Marathon with TNT--close to our hearts because we unfortunately lost a friend of ours this summer to leukemia (so crappy!)
The stories on the board are what convince me I can do it, having never run at all and still needing to lose another 60 lbs. (45 down so far).
How training going now? Ankle all better, I hope.
Leslie
