"THE LION KING" TO BE A HIGHLIGHT OF BROADWAY/L.A.'S 2006-2007 SEASON
The wait is over! After becoming the longest running production to ever play the Pantages Theatre, DISNEY'S THE LION KING triumphantly returns to Los Angeles beginning Thursday, November 16, 2006 for a limited engagement of eight weeks through Sunday, January 7, 2007. Opening night is set for Saturday, November 18, 2006.
"I am thrilled that THE LION KING will be coming back to its home in Los Angeles, the beautifully restored Pantages Theatre in Hollywood," said Thomas Schumacher, producer of Disney Theatrical Productions. "We were fortunate to have found eight weeks in our touring schedule to play the Southland during the holiday season."
This United States National Tour is currently one of eight productions running worldwide along with New York, a second United States National Tour, London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Scheveningen, and Melbourne. A limited special engagement is scheduled to open this July in Shanghai, China.
Now in its ninth sold-out year in New York at the New Amsterdam Theatre, THE LION KING is the winner of six TonyË Awards including Best Musical, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, the New York Drama Critics award for Best Musical, the Evening Standard Award for the Theatrical Event of the Year, two Olivier Awards, a Theatre World Award, the Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography, two Drama League Award and a GrammyË Award for Best Musical Show Album.
Director Julie Taymor became the first woman in Broadway history to win the Tony® Award for Best Director of a Musical. Taymor, along with Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING. Choreography is by Garth Fagan, scenic design is by Richard Hudson, costume design is by Julie Taymor and lighting design is by Donald Holder.
The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated film and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay for THE LION KING. The score features Elton John and Tim Rice's music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.
THE LION KING will begin performances on Tuesday, November 16. There are three lower-priced previews prior to the production's opening night on Saturday, November 18 at 8pm. Subscribers to the Broadway/L.A. 2006-2007 Season will have the first opportunity to purchase tickets to the production. Also, reservations for groups of fifteen (15) or more are now being accepted by calling 323-463-4367.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public at a later date to be announced. Ticket prices range from $15 to $87; VIP Ticket Packages are also available which feature prime seating, priority reserved parking, and a souvenir program from THE LION KING.
