View Full Version : Jack Sparrow Cereal, anyone have a scan or photo?

I want to use a box of the Captain Jack Sparrow cereal as a prop in a little Disneyland fan video I'm making, but I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it's already sold out.

Does anyone have a scan of the box, or a high-res photo they'd be willing to share? If so, I could print it out and tape it to another box and use that as my prop.

And a funny story that only real Disney geeks would appreciate... I was in Safeway with the sole purpose of searching for the Jack Sparrow cereal, when the POTC theme song comes on over the in-store musak. Not just some remake of the theme, but the actual "Pirates of the Carribean Yo Ho End Overture" track. I don't know about you, but I've NEVER heard any Disney music played in supermarkets, let alone park attraction music/audio. It was a weird and cool coincidence.

Being aware of proper copyright issues, of course (I don't know by whom the video is to be seen), here are two eBay auctions that have photos attached:

I can;t find this stuff ANYWHERE. We just want to try one box and save the front - but the darn thing has not been delivered to any of the stores in Irvine, CA - and some of the store managers said "huh?" when asked.. oh well.

I would like a box too, but I doubt we'll ever get it here!:(

I also heard the POTC theme this past weekend in a Vons grocery store which is related to Safeway. Even thought I was done shopping I walked around in circles just to hear the whole song.

I believe these stores are playing the Disney music because of the DLR promotion that they are running where you can buy tickets to the park in the stores. Our Vons stores have been playing a full range of Disney music. It's awesome! It also makes us all want to go to Disneyland so it works.

Copyrights, sigh... Yeah, I'm painfully aware of copyright issues, having worked in printing, desktop publishing, and internet development all my life. And also painfully aware of the lengths the Disney Company has gone to make those copyright laws more henious. Howerver, my use of the product in the video isn't any more a copyright violation than showing my friends using Disney products or wearing Disney-branded clothes in a home movie and then putting that movie on my blog. It's an amateur fan video, not a commercial production. My asking for a scan or photo might be a minor violation. Back in the day, we would have called it "fair use," but I don't know if the Disney lawyers even recognize that term anymore. Well, they must because they haven't shut down and fan podcasts, as far as I know. And hopefully the lil video I'm creating will make it onto a podcast.

Anyway, thanks for the links! The larger images might be workable, but I might end up buying a box for myself for $5.99 on eBay and using that. olegc and Vegitabeta, if you really want a box, search on eBay. If you want it badly enough, and can stand to wait, they're available. Let's just not get in a bidding war, heh ;)

I'm curious to your thoughts on this. What do you believe Disney has done that is so henious? I will spare you my viewpoint on this. Intellectual Property law is my work.

They have it at the Wal*Mart in Dixon, as well as the PotC Fruit Snacks.

The Copyright Term Extension Act, also known as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act or the Mickey Mouse Protection Act of 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Bono_Copyright_Term_Extension_Act).

I probably should have kept that little snide comment to myself, because I don't want to get into a debate on it. There's good arguments for either side, I'm sure. But I find it hypocritical of Disney, whose works are mostly derivative in the first place. And even as a producer of copyrighted works myself, I find U.S. copyrights insanely long.

So I find myself torn between loving and hating Disney. Aah, what's a mouseketeer to do? :D

I wouldn't hate Disney too much on this one. This act basically brought the United States in line with the rest of the international community. Copyright law in almost all WTO countries is basically the same. If it wasn't Disney, it would have been one of the other large media corporations that has copyrights in various countries. Sounds like you just don't like the fact that copyrights exist for a long time. The way the law is written, it is basically meant to allow the author of a work to have lifetime rights over that work, and then for his or her own kids to have the rights for their entire life. On average, corporate copyrights expire around the same time an individual copyright would. It is true that Disney lobbied hard for this because they have a huge interest in protecting their characters. They will probably lobby hard again as the new expiration approaches. However, most people in this business believe that they will not be successful this next time. The reason for the last extension was that they pretty much had to do it to equal the playing field in the international market. Without that as a factor, this last extension probably would not have happened.

Might I suggest a new thread in the lounge to discuss copyright issues?

Heh, point taken, stan4d_steph. This isn't the right thread for this discussion. But thanks, grundler, for the thoughtful response. You've given me some great points to consider. I don't know enough about the topic to debate it any further. Honestly, I'd rather just think about my upcoming Disneyland trip :D

Mostly I'm being lazy because every post to this forum has to be approved. I'm glad you got your photos though.

Wal-Mart sells it. They also sell fruit roll-up type snacks that have Capt. Jack's image on the box. Another set of food items are specially marked boxes of M & Ms, including "white chocolate pearls" candy.

Try the cereal aisle at Wal-Marts that are full supermarkets. Here in the New Orleans area we see it in the stores all the time.

We have both the cereal and the snacks here in Central CA. Our local SaveMart can't hardly keep the box of Cereal in the store though.... (I was looking for it, cause it had a great closeup makeup/hair reference shot.) Seems the girls and even older women are literally grabbing numberous boxes of it as soon as they put it out LOL:D

But, it can be found.

As for using it in a fanfilm. I've been involved in a number of fanfilms that are SW related, as long as it's not for profit, and you have disclamers all over the place. (Something like "This film is not for profit, but solely for entertainment purposes. The likenesses and characters you see here are not ours, but the property of WED (or whomever..) and we are merely borrowing them to play for a while, we promise to dust them off, not break them and put them back when finished. "

Never seen any problems (and that is basically a direct quote from one of the disclaimers,,,just change WED to George Lucas)....The main thing is that it's NOT FOR PROFIT of any kind, and this is just basically a group of people making this for their own enjoyment.

No, NOT a lawyer..but did spend years in the Entertainment Industry ...and someone who has been in numerous fan films.

Break A Leg with your Fan Film..:)

I found this cereal on sale--clearance, mind you--at my local Albertsons about two months ago. Since some of my kids were into a chocolate cereal phase then, I thought they'd love it. However, that phase stalled until *this week* and now, one of them has it for breakfast every morning (pirates are a prominent theme in our household right now).

I don't know whether our Albertson's still has it, but I think I paid $2/box for it.

I've heard it in Safeway and Food Maxx (another Safeway store) I haven't heard any other Disney music there, though... When Sean and I heard it, we started dancing around in the aisles :) Fun to shop while listening to POTC!!
