EXHIBIT NEWS: RED OCTOPUS, JACK MACKEREL, WHITE STURGEON,
RED PHALAROPE
You can get a close-up look at a red octopus in the Kelp Lab.
Its normal color is red or reddish brown, but like other octopuses
it can change quickly – in a fraction of a second – to yellow,
brown, white, red or a variety of mottled colors. To defend
themselves or for social signaling (for example, courting),
octopuses change to color patterns that contrast with their
surroundings. To camouflage themselves, octopuses change to
color patterns that blend with their surroundings.

Look in both giant octopus exhibits for small schools of jack
mackerel. You might want to count them, because it's possible
that one or both of the octopuses will develop a taste for fish.
In the wild, jack mackerels travel in large schools; young
mackerel are often found in or around kelp beds. It’s a popular
commercial fishery; wild-caught jack mackerel from Hawaii are
rated "good alternative" on our Seafood Watch pocket guide.

There's a new white sturgeon in the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit,
six feet long and weighing 75 pounds. We obtained it from
Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, where it has lived for 20
years. White sturgeon grow slowly, maturing in eight to 20 years.

We've added a third red phalarope to the aviary. The birds get
their name from the beautiful chestnut-red bellies that the
female (not the male, as in most bird species) displays during
breeding season.

Visit What's New on our web site to learn about these and
other new arrivals in our exhibits.

AQUARIUM NEWS: THE LIBORIA RETURNS
It's back! We’ve put back on display the colorful Liboria
fishing boat made for us and donated in 1984 by master
boat-builder Frank Siino; it’s hanging from the ceiling by the
historic cannery boilers. The Liboria is a felucca or selana of
a type first seen on Monterey Bay in the 1870s. Constructed by
immigrant Italian boat builders in the San Francisco area, the
19-foot to 20-foot craft were patterned after existing
Mediterranean types. Their bent oak framing, cedar planks and
versatile lateen-rigged sails proved remarkably seaworthy for
local conditions and offshore navigation.

Set up for single-handed operation, the boats were rowed or
sailed to the fishing grounds. Long handlines with baited hooks
were most commonly used, although some nets were used by boats
working in pairs. Fishing gear and catch were stowed in tubs
or baskets on deck and below. The "thole pin and grommet" rig
is arranged so that all ropes, spars, sails and gear can be
disengaged and carried ashore. This means the hull shell can
be cleaned out, an advantage considering the nature of the cargo.

The construction methods and lines of the felucca inspired the
Monterey clipper, the most popular vessel from the heyday of
the sardine fleet, 1916 to 1950.

CONSERVATION IN ACTION: OCEAN ACTION TEAM
In November 2006, California will create a network of marine
protected areas off the Central Coast -- a network designed to
protect fish and wildlife in their natural habitats. Without this
protection, they remain threatened by everything from coastal
development to unsustainable fishing practices.

We've made lasting protection for marine life off the Central
Coast our top priority this year. We're mobilizing public support
to create an underwater legacy as impressive as our state park
system on land. You are the key to success.

Decision-makers like Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Fish and
Game Commission must hear that protecting marine wildlife and
habitats is important to you and your family. If they know the
issue is a priority for you, they're more likely to protect our
oceans for the future. You can learn more and sign up now for our
Ocean Action Team.
