Introduction
Trip taken November 11 to 16th, 1996. Cast of characters were myself (Darla), my friend (Dave), and my 4 year old son (Steven). This report was written to the Disney Vacation Club message board on AOL, and was written from Boardwalk's deluxe studio.
Greetings from the BoardWalk
We checked in last night and had no problems so far (Of course, our plane did not arrive until 7:30 pm and we didn't get to the BoardWalk until around 9:00 pm). We didn't even try to find a place to park, we took the easy way out and had them valet park our car.
We are staying in a deluxe studio. This studio comes with a small day bed (which my 4 year old loves, he is so happy to have a bed all to himself). I don't know, but I feel like the Old Key West Studios are a little bigger. I think maybe because they are more square and it just looks bigger. Steven says that the BoardWalk is bigger (what does he know, he is only 4). My friend is sleeping on the pull out couch and he said that it is ok, better than he thought it would be.
After we checked in, we took a stroll down the BoardWalk. Boy, was it cold, just like Atlantic City. My friend Dave said that Disney is really great, they even made the BoardWalk feel like Atlantic City by bringing in that cold breeze from the Ocean. Only at Disney.
Oh well, We are getting ready to go to Magic Kingdom and see that Cake. Thats all for now.
Day 2 at the BoardWalk
Well, we did get to see the Cake and wow what a cake. I can't believe they actually did it. The life savers were swaying in the wind and my son thought that that was neat!!!. It was really crowded at Magic Kingdom today, the worst I've seen it in a long time. Of course, I'm use to coming in the first week in May and the second week of December.
My 4 year old rode Splash Mountain for the first time today (he finally reached 44 inches) and he really loved it. He was laughing the whole time, even for the big splash at the end. Mickey's ToonTown also made a big hit for him, now he likes more at Magic Kingdom besides the Grand Prix Race Cars. He really enjoyed the new roller coaster at Mickey's ToonTown.
It's been too cold to swim and try out Luna Park, but we did take a look at it. The pool seems smaller than the Old Key West main pool. It has an odd shape, maybe that is why it looks smaller. The roller coaster sliding board looks pretty neat, but I'm not sure the my 4 year old will go down it. He is pretty wimpy.
We tried to leave Magic Kingdom before the parade started, but no luck. They wouldn't let us go over the bridge from Frontier Land, so we were forced to watch the parade, which turned out to be pretty good. They had Beauty and the Beast float, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, and the Grand Finale Float. It was very good, I just wish we could have gotten a better viewing area. Oh well!
I'm going to take a rest now, you all take care and have a Disney Day.
Right now the little one is taking a nap and I'm relaxing too. We may head over to the Rainforest Cafe tonight, if we can get in.
Day 3 at the BoardWalk
Well, we have been having a wonderful time. Last night we tried to eat at the Rainforest Cafe, but there was a 2 to 3 hour wait. We all agreed to skip it and head over to Dixie Landing's Food Court. The food courts are great when you have a small child. Steven and a nice relaxed dinner do not mix!!
We got back to the room at 9:00 pm, just in time to see the fireworks over Epcot. You can't see all the fireworks, just the tall ones, but they were so colorful and great. We went out and stood on the Balcony and watched. The balcony isn't as small as I thought it would be. The balcony's on the floor below us are twice as big as ours, so I wonder if they are two bedroom units or one-bedroom units. You know, the really neat thing about this deluxe studio is that it is not connected to a one-bedroom unit. I was really surprised. It looks like they have a lot of these studios. Another thing that is different here is that we receive a paper every morning, even on Sunday. I don't have time to read it, but it is nice to know that it is there.
I also forgot to tell you about our first night here. We were walking down the BoardWalk and a cast member, holding a bunch of balloons, stopped us. She asked my son if he could hold on to these orphan balloons, someone had left them on the boat after a birthday party and she didn't want them to go to waste. My son was reluctant because there were 12 balloons (4 big Mickey balloons and 8 regular), because he was afraid that he would be lifted up in the air (I think he watches too much Winnie the Pooh). She finally talked him into it and she tied the balloons to his wrist. He walked around with them for about half an hour and than we headed back to the room. The minute we walked into the room balloons started popping all over the place. I think this scared my son more than anything. Here the fan was on and the balloons were being attacked by the blades. Once we turned off the fan there were only 6 balloons left. Only one Mickey balloon survived. Oh well!
Today we went to Epcot and the Honey I Shrunk the Audience was a big hit again (it never fails). I can't believe that I've seen it 3 times and I still laugh and scream. We also got to see the new Universe of Energy, what a great improvement. The whole thing flows together, is entertaining and you learn about energy. I really enjoyed it. We also rode Horizons and yes the smell of oranges is still there. Man, it smells like someone just peeled an orange.
My friend Dave is still at the parks, but Steven and I came back for a swim in Luna Park pool. Steven won't go down the coaster slide and neither would I We are both chicken. But, Steven did love the Elephants that sprayed water into the pool. He also liked the play ground right next to the kiddy pool. I don't know if this is neat or not, but they don't have sand here. They have the rubber turf for the kids to play on. It is nice because there is no sand in the pool, but you can't make any sand castles out of rubber turf.
Day 4 at the BoardWalk
Well, today was a long day. We started out at MGM and than ended up at Magic Kingdom.
We took the long boat ride over to MGM. We have to stop at the Yacht Club, then the Swan and Dolphin then we went to MGM. Even though the ride was long, we were still excited. Our first stop was Tower of Terror and for the first time I actually enjoyed it. Every time I had ridden it before, I was tense instead of trying to enjoy the ride. This time we were in the front row and I just relaxed, and it wasn't that bad. Three drops. The funny thing is that when we left the ride, my son told me that he didn't like that ride. I guess being in the front for him wasn't so cool.
We got to see Muppet 4D and the Great Movie Ride and when that was over, we walked right out in time for the 1:00pm Toy Story Parade. I love this parade. The music is great, the characters are great, the only problem was that my son couldn't see over all the people, so I lifted him onto my shoulders, now my back isn't so great.
After the parade, we decided to go over to the Magic Kingdom. What's the best way to get from MGM to MK? We decided to take the bus to the Poly and than take the Monarail, It only took about 40 minutes.
We arrived at MK at 2:30 pm, just in time for everyone to start lining the roads waiting for the 3:00 parade. We decided not to fight the crowds and go into Tony's and eat. It was just Steven and me, since I let the rest of the folks enjoy MK without the 4 year old. Now, I'm relaxing in the room while the 4 year old sleeps. Oh this is the life!!!
PS: Tonight we are meeting Mary (SLEEVESEND) and doing the pontoon boat to Epcot to see the fireworks. Should be fun.
Day 5 at the BoardWalk
Well, last night I meet Mary for the fireworks cruise and we had a wonderful time. My 4 year old was so amazed, that once the fireworks started I didn't hear a word from him. Really, I just loved the new Epcot fireworks show, they have more fireworks and more pictures displayed in the water. Seeing the fireworks from the pontoon boat is neat, but you can't see any of the countries.
Today we went to MGM and it was packed. We only went to see the Indiana Jones show and than Steven and I left. Oh yeah, I forgot, we did get to stop at some shops on our way out. I ended up spending $114 on 25th anniversary things. You can't get them at the Disney Store, at least that is what they said. I got the 25th plate and 25th anniversary book from when it all began and a couple of other things.
We came back to the BoardWalk and had a very good hot dog for lunch. Than we spent some time sitting on the verandah, Steven found a small rocking chair just for him. It got a little overcast today and it started to sprinkle at MGM, but now it looks like it is getting sunny again.
Day 6 at the BoardWalk
Today started out really slow. I decided to make this a relaxing day (kind of like all the rest!). We were going to head over to MGM again and see the things we missed yesterday, but when we got to the boat dock, there were already about 25 people in line to catch the boat, so we decided to go to Epcot.
We headed straight for Honey I Shrunk the Audience again, but my son didn't want to see it again, so we ended up doing the Journey into Imagination ride again. After that we played with all the stuff on the second floor. I really think that my son has more fun playing and running about than sitting on the rides. Upstairs, they have the table of nails and he loved running his hand under that. There were other neat things there too.
After that we headed over to the countries. I don't know about you all, but I could never get my son interested in this part of WDW. He is too young for the passports and all he really wants is to buy a truck or car. So I told him that maybe at USA they will have a truck or car, that kept him quiet for a while. Once we hit the American Pavilion, that's what he wanted to go look for, but at 1:00pm, all the characters (Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Chip, Dale, and Pluto) came out and danced and sang for us, than the kids got to stand in line and wait for a hug and a picture. Steven stopped for that, but after that, he was ready to go and find his truck. So we went into the USA shop and sure enough they had a Coke-a-Cola truck and Steven had to have it. What can I say, I promised him if he could find a truck, he could have it so he got it.
Last night we went to the Rain Forest to eat. We sat by the Apes and they would make noise every couple of minutes. My 4 year old really like this restaurant, he ordered the chicken nuggets and they came in the shape of dinosaurs. There is also a big alligator in the front of the restaurant with 3 parrots swinging above. This place is very kid oriented, it was loud, but fun. We also got a chance to play in the sand box (not me, but my son) before eating at the restaurant. We got there at 5:00pm and there was no waiting. Much better than the 2 hour wait the night before.
The other night we were at the Yacht and Beach Club and they already started putting up the Xmas display there. They said that the display would be done tonight, so we are going to head over there before going to Epcot for the fireworks display (This time from land). They also have some other Xmas decorations up, like the Xmas tree at the Marketplace and they've started hanging the lights at MGM. I guess they have to start decorating now if they want it all done by Thanksgiving.
Well, got to take that nap, only 2 more days and we have to go home to Cleveland (I'm dreading the snow).
PS: I forgot the most exciting thing that we did last night. After we ate at the Rain Forest, it was 7:30pm so we hurried in our cars over to the Contemporary. We made it there right before the fireworks were about to go off and we went up to the 15th floor. When you go the right of the restaurant, there is a door that takes you out onto the Contemporary roof, from there you can view the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom. They also pipe in the sound from the Magic Kingdom. It was a great way to end the day. And the fireworks display is fantastic!!!!!
Final Day at the BoardWalk
Well, this is my last night here. It will be my last post from the BoardWalk, since we have to check out by 11:00am.
I can't believe it, it rained today. This is the first time I have been to Disney World while it was raining. I was beginning to think that it never rained in WDW, now I know better. It looks like it will stop by tonight, we are planning on going back to MK to see the Spectro Magic Parade and the Fireworks. As a matter of fact, I can see the sun trying to come through the clouds as I type.
We went to Magic Kingdom this morning and did the things we didn't have time for earlier. The rain and the fact that it is Friday seemed to keep the crowds down. We got to do the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and Mr. Toads Wild Ride all before 10:30am. Not bad. Than we had to go and check all the stores to see if there were any cars or trucks for sale. Believe it or not we found some in the 101 Dalmatian. The kid has his own priorities.
Last night we went to Epcot to see the fireworks. We parked on a bench at 8:05pm in front of Canada. I know it was early, but we'd already saw all of Epcot and wanted to get a good spot for Illuminations 25. Once 9:00pm rolled around, there were three layers of people to see the fireworks. So I stood up and let the kids that were in the back row come and stand with my son. I can't believe that he made a friend that night. Him and his friend started to dance to the music and were really acting crazy. We all loved the fireworks. I think that Epcot did a good job. The funny thing is, that you can't see the pictures on the water from this angle like you can from at France. I don't know if that was due to the wind or just a different view. Anyway, it was great.
After the fireworks, we headed over to the Yacht and Beach Club to check out the Christmas display. The cast members were right, the display was complete and the two trains were running around the track. They really out did themselves this year. They had a small town with kids ice skating and sled riding down the hill, Santa's workshop, And much much more. All made out of eatable stuff, except for the people of course. Either way, it was definitely worth a trip over to see it.
Well, good bye from the BoardWalk. I'm sad to go and return to Cleveland with all that snow.
Take Care and Have a Disney Day,
