EXHIBIT NEWS: THREE NEW PENGUINS, BLUEFIN TUNA, CALIFORNIA
LIZARDFISH
On or around February 20, we’ll introduce three new adult female
blackfooted penguins into Splash Zone--Susu (sue-sue), which is
Swahili for "licorice," Umngane (oom-ga-knee), which is Zulu for
"friend," and Zuri (zur-ee), which is Swahili for "beautiful."
They join our permanent colony of 15 penguins and will remain
with us when we eventually return the 19 penguins under our care
from the Audubon Aquarium of the Americans in New Orleans.
The Sand Channel exhibit in the Kelp Gallery now contains two
California lizardfish, so-named because of their reptilian
appearance. This species prefers sandy or muddy bottoms, and
ranges from San Francisco to Mexico, usually in depths of 60 to
150 feet or more. Juveniles are nearly transparent with a row of
large black spots on their belly; adults come in various shades
of brown with red blotches on the back, dark blotches on the side
and a pale belly.
The Outer Bay is home to seven new bluefin tuna. They range in
size from approximately 42 inches to 65 inches in length. Can you
tell the difference between yellowfin and bluefin tuna? Don’t
worry; some of our staff has difficulty, too. Hint--bluefin tuna
have visibly shorter pectoral fins and a more bluish tinge to the
tail.
Visit What’s New on our web site to learn about these and other
new arrivals in our exhibits. http://www.mbayaq.org/news/
AQUARIUM NEWS: KELP CAM LIVE AUDIO, TOPP WEB SITE WINS AWARD,
"OCEANS IN GLASS" DVD
Now you can hear as well as see the feeding show in our Kelp
Forest exhibit by watching our Kelp Cam. We’ll stream live audio
during both daily programs, at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is the
third cam with live audio during a feeding show--tune in to the
Penguin Cam at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, and the Outer Bay Cam
at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) web site earned
recognition in this year’s Ultraweb Awards for "high quality
content, good design and proficient functionality." From an
applicant pool of over 5,500 sites, fewer than 100 sites achieved a
comparable evaluation, and only 30 met criteria for higher level
distinctions. To learn more, visit:
http://www.ultrawebaward.com/winners.asp. For a recent example of
TOPP's award-winning storytelling, visit
http://209.232.226.109/web/FeatureDetails.aspx?id=66&WG=9 where you
can learn how TOPP scientists use sunlight to plot the tracks of
migrating albatross and tuna.
Our Gift & Bookstore will soon carry DVD copies of "Oceans in Glass:
Behind the scenes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium." The PBS Nature
program, which is airing nationwide, offers a visually stunning look
at what it takes to create our exhibits. The program also features
the white shark we had on exhibit before we released her in March
2005. For a preview of the program or to order a DVD from PBS,

CONSERVATION IN ACTION: RESTAURANT PARTNERS, SEAFOOD SUCCESSES,
MARINE PROTECTED AREAS, DAVIDSON SEAMOUNT EXPEDITION
Using your Seafood Watch pocket guide at restaurants and stores
is beginning to have a real impact on the way seafood is sold. On
the restaurant front, we’ve launched a Restaurant Partners
program on the Monterey Peninsula, with more than 30 participants
signed up already. Each of our partners agrees not to serve items
on the red "Avoid" list on our Seafood Watch pocket guides, and
to train its wait staff about sustainable seafood choices. We
assist in these efforts, providing materials, answering questions
and helping with staff training. For a complete list, visit our
Restaurant Partners page to learn more and find a participating
restaurant.

Seafood Watch and everyone who uses a Seafood Watch pocket guide
has played a key role in two recent announcements that will
transform the global seafood market in a big way.
First, Compass Group USA--the largest food service company in the
United States and the parent company of our food service
provider, Bon Appétit Management Co.--has announced plans to
shift its purchases away from threatened fish species and toward
sustainably sourced supplies. The new policy will impact
approximately one million pounds of fish purchased annually by
Compass Group. Bon Appétit’s enthusiastic adoption of Seafood
Watch guidelines when purchasing for its 150-plus clients was the
inspiration for the Compass Group decision.
Second, Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, has announced
that within three years it will source all of its wild-caught
fresh and frozen fish for the North American market from
fisheries that meet the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)’s
independent environmental standard for sustainable and well-
managed fisheries. You can help us make a difference as a Seafood
Watch Advocate--find out more at
http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/cr_seafoodwatch/sfw_consumers.asp.
The aquarium is actively working to win approval for a network of
marine protected areas along California's central coast--and
eventually along the entire coast of California. If you'd like to
help with this and other critical ocean issues, become part of
our Ocean Action Team. You can learn more and sign up now at
http://www.mbayaq.org/cr/cffo.asp.
Fantastic deep sea life, living on the sides of a huge undersea
mountain off the Big Sur coast, has been documented in detail by
a team of scientists from the Monterey Bay National Marine
Sanctuary (MBNMS), the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
(MBARI) and Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. They, along with
filmmakers from the British Broadcasting Corporation, completed
an expedition on MBARI’s research ship Western Flyer to the
Davidson Seamount. As in two earlier expeditions, scientists saw
wondrous things, including vast and fantastic deep sea coral
gardens and what prove to be new species. You can view their log
and see images from the trip at
http://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/explorations/06davidson/.
FREE OFFERS: SHARK POSTER, GIANT OCTOPUS WALLPAPER
This month’s Sea Notes specials include a free shark poster and
wallpaper of*a giant octopus in its Ocean’s Edge exhibit.
