View Full Version : Searching Just a Certain Part of the Planet

I wanted to search the WDW updates for something about the changes to dining at Cinderella's -- but I think the only way I could do that is to search ALL of MousePlanet and wade through a ton of hits (including all the trip reports that mention the castle). Is there any way to JUST search the WDW updates (or any other sub-category of MousePlanet)?

I wasn't sure if this went in Administration or Columns, but since it was about MousePlanet, I figured this was more appropriate.

THANKS!

When I'm trying to find something that I know that I wrote somewhere, some time in a park update, I usually include WDW and Update in the search terms. That doesn't edit out all of the trip reports, but it certainly cuts them down. There's probably a way to do something using URLs, but I haven't taken the time to figure it out. (For those technically adept with Google search limitations, all WDW Park Updates start with the string "http://www.mouseplanet.com/articles.php?art=wd".

Unfortunately there is not an easy way to limit search to specific columns with the Google search we provide.

You can do some things to weed out larger sections of the site by adding the "inurl:" operator your search.

If you are using the Google search box provided on our site, then you can enter your search terms and then add to the end:

inurl:articles.php
inurl:guide.php
inurl:mousepad
inurl:trip.rpt

The first will limit your search results to articles published on MousePlanet. The second will find any pages in the Park Guides. The third will limit your search ot MousePad (I sometimes use this because the searching is a bit more powerful than the native MousePad search). The fourth will limit things to trip reports.

So, to most narrowly restrict your search to the WDW Park Update you could do a search along the following lines (too complex, I know)

everest inurl:articles.php "Walt Disney World Park Update"

That will search for instances of the word "everest" but only in articles that contain the phrase "Walt Disney World Park Update." This should be 99% accurate but if another article also mentions the park update by its full name it could end up in the results.

Cool, thanks you two!
(Hmm, I probably could have done my search and included Mark's name, since he isn't too often mentioned in trip reports!)

Drince88, I just wanted to say thanks. In the process of answering the question above I had a eureka moment that solved an issue I was having with coding.

So I was able to make a relatively minor change to the way the site is coded that will allow very specific searching in the future. I now have to wait until Google next reindexes the entire site but once it does I'll be able to roll out some more advanced search options.
