Is anyone here doing SBD or done SBD in the past?

I started SBD a week ago and am still in Phase 1. It hasn't been all that difficult but I can't imagine giving certain foods up for a great length of time (rice, potatoes, tortillas). How do you cope with it?

I have lost 7 pounds. Of course, I have LOTS more to go but I have started walking and will start lifting weights at the gym again next week.

I have not tried this one. I hope Shortiemetoo reads this because I know she was doing this one and had done very well on it.

Good going Shannen! :)

Thanks, Ruthie. I thought Renta had done it in the past too so maybe she can chime in.

My hubby, my sis, her hubby and I all really like the SBD. We agree that Phase One is pretty boring, but it gets better. We have found the "trick" to adding stuff back in without it backfiring is to add in moderation. For example: I now allow myself a bagel once a week. My hubby may ask for a pasta dinner this week and next week want a special dessert. My sis and her guy also follow their hearts desires, but we all share the same mantra:

"Only one "treat" and try to limit to one time per week."

You'll do great, especially since you've added the exercise.
Good Luck, I'll be thinking ggod thoughts for you.

My father and stepmother are on it, and they're having no problems sticking with it, even though they really enjoy the "bad" stuff.

Funny story, we were at WDW, eating dinner at Flying Fish Cafe. After my father ordered, the waiter asked "South Beach?" After my folks told him that they were both on it, he said that he was planning on starting it the next week, and they spent the rest of the night discussing the diet and what substitutions worked well. LOL

Apparently, there's a similar program called the Sonoma diet. Has anyone tried that?

DizChick - So are you saying that you essentially only eat one carb item a week? Or are you saying that you eat whole grain items but you allow one "bad" carb item a week? Or are you saying that you pretty much eat like you are on Phase 1 but still allow one "bad" carb item a week?

Helen - I saw the book but I haven't skimmed through it. I think they are probably very similar. Lean protein and lots of veggies. It hasn't been easy giving up cereal and tortillas but it is working.

Shannen - sorry for the confusion: When we went from Phase 1 to Phases 2 and 3 we started with one whole grain item every other day to see how we did. Once we felt comfortable with that, we continued to add the whole grain items in moderation. The "bad" carbs are the once a week treat.

The great thing is that when we've overdone it on vacation or with holiday meals, a couple of days back on Phase One gets us in swing again.

Hope that clears up my first post.

Thanks, Kathy! :fez:

I finally broke down last night and bought some whole wheat pitas (okay on Phase 2 but a no-no on Phase 1). I made steak fajitas last night and I was going to use these instead of tortillas. I didn't use them. DH did but I didn't. That is the third time I have been faced with cheating on Phase 1 and I didn't (the first time was Red Lobster cheese bisquits). Yeah me! I may indulge with a piece of pizza Friday night at my nephew's birthday party though.

I almost forgot, I am now 9.5 pounds down! Woohoo! (I still have to get to the gym though.) :D

Way to go, Josie!!! :D

Tell me, is this working better than WW? is it easier to stay on course? weight coming off easier? Are you doing it with someone?

Thanks, sweetie!

Rick and I are doing it together. If you can get through the first two weeks, it is pretty easy. The first two weeks is basically lean protein, vegetables and LF dairy (only LF plain yogurt). You then gradually add back in wholesome grains and carbs. Check out this website: South Beach Diet Message Board (http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/forum/index.php). It explains the plan and has a list of Phase 1 foods. It is basically like WW Core program.

I don't know that it is easier than WW but I think it a healthy plan. It depends on how healthy you eat when you are on WW. I do really well for a while and then start eating junk but think it is okay as long as I stay within my points range. Yeah, go figure.

Hey, I am checking out that site . . . the before and after pics are amazing!

I have to start something here and usually do WW but the South Beach has come to my attention several times and I may give it a good go.

I am now down 11.5 lbs. but DH and I have decided to switch to Weight Watchers again. It is just too hard to go without carbs. We are still going to try to eat whole grains and such but we needed a little more flexibility.

You might enjoy the 'new' Core program that Weight Watchers has - I think it's been about 1.5 years, now - but from my understanding, it's very similar to South Beach and the like, but without the 'go totally without' part. There is no weighing/measuring/counting involved.

I have thought of doing the Core plan but I seem to a have a problem with the "eat until your full" part of it. ;) I am pretty good at counting points though.

Fantastic Shannen!!!!! I think switching to WW will be fine at this point. You have a great start that will help keep you motivated! :)

Unlike me, who is still waiting to get that start.

Did you make it officially to South Beach Phase II before going to WW? On Phase II, you basically can have two servings of fruit and two servings of bread/oatmeal/sweet potatoes per day. I'm finding it's pretty easy to stay on Phase II if I can have a slice of toast with breakfast and a sweet potato with dinner. Don't forget, beans do not count towards the carb/starch limits.

Phase I was another kettle of fish altogether, which is strictly proteins and veggies until you get the sugar cravings under control. Hated it -- that's why I could never stay on Atkins. But I did find that tummy inches did melt off during Phase I, which is what helped me get through that two week period.

I have to chime in about the Phase 2 and 3 parts being easier - I agree completely. Shannen, I might suggest that even if you haven't done a full 2 weeks on Phase 1 go ahead and switch to Phase 2. My hubby is down a full 30, count'em 30 pounds!!! Woot!! Woot!! Can't say enough about his success as this is the ONLY diet he had ever been able to really show great gains (or should that be losses) with.

Hey, what ever you decide is cool, because you are doing something. Good for you!!!

Thanks, Sheila and Dizchick. I am now officially back at WW but I am so glad I read the SBD book. I think what I have learned will help me in my journey to lose this weight forever. I am counting points but also watching my carbs (most of the time). The weight loss has slowed down (13 lbs. down now) but I am okay with that. It will speed up once I commit myself to going to the gym (next week) instead of just walking (which is what I have been doing).
