Hi,
I am a student at Saint Mary's College and I am doing a project on Disney. If any current or former employees could answer a few questions about working at Disney it would really help me out!

Questions:
1) Position at Disney:
2) Is Disney as good place to work? Why or why not?
3) Are there any negative aspects to working at Disney?
4) Is there fairness in hiring, promotions, and developing a career at Disney?
5) Does Disney encourage people to do the right thing and call out unfair practices?

Thanks so much for your time.

I did the college program at walt disney world. i hope this helps you

1) Position at Disney: showkeeper (custodian) at MGM.

2) Is Disney as good place to work? Why or why not? No. The attitude from many of my fellow cast members was negative to begin with. During the hurricanes, they deployed us in a completely unorganized fashion to resorts, expecting us to learn a new job on the spot. The pay is terrible. True, there are times when it gives you a good feeling to see happiness brought to the kids, but, happiness does not pay bills. The college program is what i worked through, and it is a terrible idea. They use you for cheap labor, and thats it. They kick you out as soon as you are done, unless you are one of the unfortunate who choose to extend and do more of the college program.

3) Are there any negative aspects to working at Disney? see above

4) Is there fairness in hiring, promotions, and developing a career at Disney? In the disney college program, they reserve the right to use you wherever they wish, in order to fill positions. For kids who think this is a good idea to do the program, they will be screwed. If someone came in expecting to work in somewhere to relate to their major, and end up doing custodial work, or some other bottom of the barrel job, its a complete mis-representation of the term "college program".

5) Does Disney encourage people to do the right thing and call out unfair practices? When I encountered 2 very serious situations (sexual harrassment and use of racial slurs by cast members) i was greeted and welcomed with my complaints. I was drilled with questions, which was kinda expected. They would not let me see results though, that is very dissapointing. I did call out several fellow cast members about poor work quality, and when my manager listened, they said there wasnt much they could do. I raised flags, blew whistles (figuratively) and I made it very apparent that these employees were not working to their expected level, and for some reason, noone did a thing about it.

Is this specific to Disneyland, or Disney in general?

1) Position at Disney: Outdoor vending

2) Is Disney as good place to work? Why or why not?

No. It's a huge pain just to get to work, park, switch costumes, and dress. My schedule was more of a guideline - some days I was asked (coerced) to work later, some days I was asked to go home early (because the park was not as busy as expected). Plus it was A LOT of work for little pay. I did like that we got free sodas on our breaks/lunches.

3) Are there any negative aspects to working at Disney?

The thing I disliked the most was the fact that you had to be there about an hour before your shift started (unpaid) to park, get backstage, switch costumes, and dress. (I think you got paid for maybe 20 minutes to do all that, but in reality it takes much longer.)

4) Is there fairness in hiring, promotions, and developing a career at Disney?

I only worked there in high school and a little bit of college so I wasn't trying to develop a career.

5) Does Disney encourage people to do the right thing and call out unfair practices?

I don't think I ever encountered anything like that.

I choose not to comment to this thread because my comments will just be too negative and I would rather just not bring back bad memories.

1. attractions - ST and AO did F! and parades as well...

2. Like all places of employment it had its up and downs...I loved working there and found that many of my fellow CM's were very cool but at times had a negative attitude about being there. Though I found that those who were there becuase they did it only for the love of DL (like me) where the money wasnt a total issue, just being in a place that you have loved for so long, had a great general outlook on being a CM

3. The pay and the fact that as opposed to our FL conterparts, there is NO Child Care services. The only reason I left was due to the latter.

4. Ummm, well.. I have heard both negative and positive. I think it depends on the area of the park.

5. I'm sure they encourage privacy/anoniminty (sp?) if you feel the need to have to let your leads or managers know of something going on...otherwise I have no clue.

Whats your basis for the project? Wheres the college located?

Wheres the college located?

Its a private college in Los Angeles.

I believe the basis for the project is simple...she's probably studying Human Resources/ Human Relations. Projects like this are done quite often as I had to do several of them while working on my degree. You do a comparison of similar companies, job responsibilities and compare/contrast.

I was just wondering, from anyone who works or has worked at Disney World... what are these "transfer guidelines" one must meet to move to another department? I want to be a character and will be auditioning again in April, but will taking another job in a different department make it harder to get a character gig? Do you have to wait a certain amount of time after being employed before you can try to transfer?

If you want a definitive answer, your best bet may be to ask at the audition, or to call the Jobs Hotline beforehand if you're afraid that it might influence the outcome of the audition.

So, did we have any happy experiences working at DL? And as a side note...If working at any job is such a pain, I would recommend another career choice :)
