Monterey Bay Aquarium -- Wanted: "Official Explorer"

MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM SEEKS “OFFICIAL EXPLORER”
Get ready to explore at the Monterey Bay Aquarium with “Oceans 2006: A Year of Exploring.” To help guide the way, the aquarium is looking for an “Official Explorer.” Children between the ages of 10 and 13 who are committed to conservation are encouraged to apply.
The Official Explorer will work side by side with aquarium staff throughout 2006 to help further the aquarium’s mission to inspire conservation of the oceans. He or she will appear at the aquarium’s Exploration Events and work with the public relations staff and the media to help highlight the importance of ocean conservation.
Official Explorer benefits include:
· A one-year family membership to the Monterey Bay Aquarium
· Admission for Explorer and 11 other kids (of appropriate ages) for Underwater Explorers
· Science Under Sail excursion for Explorer and his or her family (of appropriate ages)
· Exclusive behind-the-scenes tours of the aquarium’s Outer Bay and Ocean’s Edge exhibit areas
· An official Monterey Bay Aquarium uniform shirt to wear at special events
· Free tickets for the Explorer’s entire class to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium once (max. 30 tickets)
· Recognition and profile on the aquarium’s web site
· Opportunity to “job shadow” an employee Monterey Bay Aquarium employee for a day
To be considered for selection, children must print out the “Official Explorer” application that’s available on the aquarium’s web site, and submit it along with a letter of recommendation from a teacher and a 250-word essay demonstrating their commitment to conservation. Applications are due by December 1.
The Official Explorer must be prepared to serve a one-year term, be available for six to eight special events at the aquarium in 2006, be comfortable appearing before and being interviewed by the media, be willing to host a blog and be between the ages of 10 and 13 on January 1, 2006.
