View Full Version : Can I take my own Segway?
Leap for Joy 10-23-2005, 06:34 PM We were in Disneyland this weekend and it's my first trip since getting rheumatoid arthritis. Day one didn't seem too bad and I went all day. The next morning I could barely walk but thought the stiffness would ease up if I got moving. I was wrong wrong wrong! Obviously I'm going to need help for my next trip. I might watch for a used wheelchair to buy inexpensively, but I'd really like to buy a segway. And that leads to my question...
Do you know if Disney allows guests to use their own segways in the parks?
Whittibo 10-23-2005, 06:40 PM Good question. I never saw one there except the one the CM's had near Innovations. Why not rent one of the powered wheelchairs?? I am just thinking, people would have more 'compassion' for someone in a wheelchair then someone on a segway. Plus, what would you do with it while on rides??

Good question. I've never seen them in the parks, but then again...not too many folks own their own.
Leap for Joy 10-23-2005, 07:00 PM I didn't rent a wheelchair or scooter because it was spendy. The wheelchairs are $28 and the scooters are $55! I never processed that before. That really is a bit expensive for one day!
Alex S. 10-23-2005, 07:12 PM Most of that cost is the $20 deposit that you'll get back when you return the wheelchair ECV. The end cost of a wheelchair rental is just $8.
I'm pretty sure that DL does not allow people to use their own Segways.
MammaSilva 10-23-2005, 07:17 PM Actually, the cost of the rental for an ECV is 35 with an additional 20 dollar deposit. I just got back from the parks and rented one the friday before MA to save my knee for saturday when I wouldn't have as much assistance with strollers and wheelchairs. You get the $20 refunded to the card you use for the deposit and the new 'upgrade' is that you can transfer/hop between the parks with the rental. In the past you had to turn it in then go to the other park and ask for another, you didn't pay twice but you had to risk the other park having one available.
Whittibo 10-23-2005, 07:46 PM Even $35 is a bit pricey. :s I guess if you have someone that can push you, a standard wheelchair for $8 isn't bad, that's how much the strollers are.

That was when each individual park had bag check, so they wouldn't let rented wheelchairs or strollers out of each park because people could then just take off with them. Since they've moved the bag check to either side of the esplanade, both rented wheelchairs and strollers can be taken between both parks, just not past the bag checks.
Leap For Joy - Like Alex, I can't imagine that Disney would allow it, but you could always email them to ask beforehand.
Cheshire Figment 10-24-2005, 06:16 AM Disney does not allow guests to bring Segways into the parks at WDW.
One of the major reasons is that Segways can travel up to 12 MPH and can be very dangerous in a crowded area. My personal ECV has a top speed of 4.5 MPH, and 5 MPH seems to be the top end for those I have looked at. The ECVs Disney rents have a top speed of only 2 MPH.
I have to be extremely careful when travelling above a walking speed as most guests are so entranced by things in the parks that they do not have situational awareness. When I am in a park I am either with friends or relatives or there for shopping or dining. Because of this I am able to pay attention to what is going on near me and not oohing or aahing over what is seen.
There are Segway classes at Epcot. The Segways used are wired for a maximum of 6 MPH. There is 1.5 hours of training inside of a building, and then the group is able to go out to World Showcase before it is open to other guests. The route taken from the Communicore building is not heavily travelled and the Segways are (usually) safely returned before the real crowds start.
ToursbabeC3po 10-24-2005, 11:16 AM I would call and tell them you are using it as a mobility device and see what they say. Before the rule was if it is not being pulled from behind (Wagons, or pull carts) it was fine to come into the park and that was for insurance reasons.
Sagways are very fast so I can see why they would say no but it is worth a call.

Cheshire Figment 10-24-2005, 07:34 PM Segways are still not considered a "mobility device" under the ADA. Disney does not allow them for guests except for the class as mentioned above, and that is supervised.

Oh man! I wish I had known this!!! I sat alone in the motel room watching boring TV one day... :crying:
Leap for Joy 10-24-2005, 07:47 PM Thanks for the info everyone! I was hoping to justify my segway purchase though... I guess I'll have to find another way to do so!
Just to back up what Cheshire Figment said, the FDA has not approved Segways as "durable medical equipment," so it is not covered under the ADA. Disney does not allow them to be used by guests inside the theme parks except when participating in a guided Segway tour.
