BURBANK, Calif. - Michael Eisner, who stepped down last week as chief executive of The Walt Disney Co., has resigned his seat on the company's board of directors, Disney said Thursday.

Wonder if this means he has something specific planned or if he just decided to give it up.

This is purely a guess, but I suspect he plans to start an entertainment company of his own (probably a film production company, possibly along with his son) and remaining on the Disney board until next February would have generated a conflict of interest.

Eisner tendered his resignation from the Board of Directors of the Registrant, effective immediately. Mr. Eisner’s status as Chief Executive Officer of the Registrant ended at the conclusion of the Registrant’s fiscal year on October 1, 2005, and he no longer provides any services for the Registrant.

Interesting that this action actually happened back on Friday, September 30th. But they didn't announce it until almost a week later.

This was obviously something that was cooked up in advance as part of the agreement for Eisner's departure. This wasn't something Eisner decided to do 6 days after he resigned. It was pre-planned and part of his departure choreography.

I think that is very unlikely...

I strongly suspect this is nothing more than Eisner clearing conflicts of interest for whatever entertainment venture he decides to go into next.

Note that Disney actually never made a formal announcement about this at all. It made it into the press because it was included as part of a SEC filing, which is public information.
