‘FIESTA DEL MAR’ WEEKEND EVENT AT AQUARIUM TO CELEBRATE OCEAN CONSERVATION

First “Environmental Hero” awards to go to Mexican rock group Maná, actor Esai Morales

Celebrate ocean conservation through Hispanic cultural traditions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium during its inaugural “Fiesta del Mar” event on October 15 and 16. “Fiesta del Mar” will include live performances by musicians and traditional Aztec dancers, auditorium programs, bilingual feeding shows, conservation information booths, crafts for kids and more. Children 12 years and younger will receive free admission on both days.

During the weekend, the aquarium will also present its inaugural “Heroe del Medio Ambiente” (Hero of the Environment) award to the rock group “Maná” for its work to protect sea turtles through its environmental conservation foundation, “Selva Negra,” and to actor Esai Morales for his work as founding board member of “E.C.O.” (Earth Communications Office) and with the Wildlife Preservation Fund in Costa Rica.

Maná will be honored on Saturday at 2 p.m.; the group will not be performing at the aquarium during “Fiesta del Mar.” Morales will receive his award on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both awards will be presented on a second story balcony in “Splash Zone” overlooking the Great Tide Pool.

Maná’s appearance at the aquarium was arranged through WiLDCOAST, an international conservation team dedicated to preserving endangered marine species and threatened coastal wildlands of the Californias. For more information on its projects, visit www.wildcoast.net.

The full lineup of “Fiesta del Mar” programs and activities – all included with aquarium admission – includes:
Family musical performances by Juan Sanchez at 11 a.m., 1p.m.and 3 p.m.; on both days, in the auditorium.
Jalisco harp performances by William Faulkner between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.; on both days, in the main entrance.
Pre-hispanic musical performances by Martin Espino between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.; on both days, in the Marine Mammal Hall.
Aztec dance performances by the Mixcoatl Anahuac Troupe; at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 and 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, on the Great Tide Pool deck.
Presentation by Dr. Exequiel Ezcurra, former president of the National Institute of Ecology in Mexico; at noon on Sunday, in the auditorium.
“Last Journey for the Leatherback,” a short film about leatherback sea turtles; in Spanish, at noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, in the auditorium; in English, at 2 and 5 p.m. both days, in the auditorium.
Bilingual penguin feeding programs; at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on both days, in Splash Zone.
Bilingual Outer Bay feeding program; at 11 a.m. on both days, at the Outer Bay exhibit.
Bilingual diver feeding program; at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both days, at the Kelp Forest exhibit.
Conservation information booths featuring WiLDCOAST International Conservation Team, Iemanaya Oceanica (conservation of sharks and rays) and the aquarium’s Seafood Watch program; between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. on both days, throughout the aquarium.
Face painting; between noon and 4 p.m. on Saturday, near the second floor entrance to the skywalk in the Ocean’s Edge exhibit wing.
Family crafts and activities; between noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday, in the Discovery Lab.
A prize wheel booth; between noon and 4 p.m. on both days, on the second floor entrance to the Outer Bay exhibit wing.
