View Full Version : 3rd gate Las Vegas?
Nfatuated 09-15-2005, 10:30 PM I have a friend who works for the BLM in Nevada and he said that Disney was intrested in a land swap in Nye county, 30 minutes from Las Vegas. Could Disney be opening their 3rd gate in Las Vegas? I guess it really would not be a 3rd gate, but it is only 4 hours north. Anyone ekse heard of this.
coronado_g 09-16-2005, 12:56 AM No, I haven't heard anything like that. It sounds like a very unsubstantiated rumor. There's nothing in Nye County worth even driving by, let alone trading for.
Sandiegoboy 09-16-2005, 03:35 AM who knows.
I think they should get some land in Vegas and build a casino.

Disney themed slot machines..... I'm there! :)
jrad32 09-16-2005, 08:40 AM No way this can be true, but it is funny. For those of you who don't know, Nye County is a desert area with the major metropolis of Tonopah (about 2 hours northwest of Las Vegas) and Pahrump (about 40 minutes southwest of Las Vegas).
Pahrump is a growing bedroom community for LV, but it's not very conducive to a theme park. The roads in and out of Pahrump are two lanes, and the weather, 110 in the sumer, would be a problem. Also prostitution is still legal in Nye County. Prostitution is not legal in Clark County (where Las Vegas is).
I can't imagine Disney building a theme park in Pahrump next to a house of ill repute. What is it going to be "Disney's Brothel Land" or "The Shady Lady featuring Cinderella"

They've always called Vegas the Adult Disneyland. Maybe it really can be now? Ah the "happeist place on earth!"
HorizonsA 09-16-2005, 10:20 AM That would be dumb. Usually when you make a resort, all theme parks and whatnot are not hours away from each other. At Walt Disney World, It doesn't take 4 hours to get from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot, or 5 hours to get from Animal Kingdom to MGM Studios.
Why would they make a "third gate" to Disneyland 4 hours from the resort itself?
amarvel 09-16-2005, 10:33 AM Its an interesting idea, but i would think the more plausible one would be for them to make a Disney themed casino on the strip rather than a whole park out in the middle of nowhere....
SarahShep 09-16-2005, 11:23 AM LOL! Anytime Disney buys/aquires land, it doesn't mean that they're going to build a theme park.
A) Real estate is a good investment, no matter who you are and ESPECIALLY in Nevada and Arizona, two of the fastest growing states in the union. It's entirely plausible that Disney is just going to sit on this for awhile, and sell it off in the future for astronomical profits.
B) Maybe they're thinking of building studios out there in the future, as SoCal is becoming increasingly crowded and congested...I know that several prominent studios (and rumored, Disney) own land out here in AZ for just that future purpose.
And if they DID decide to build a theme park, it would be one in of itself, I'm quite certain. There's no way they'd call it a third gate...it's in another state! That would make no logistical sense. That'd be like calling WDW a second gate to Disneyland...just wouldn't work. I'm pretty sure they consider a "gate" something that you can get to in one day. And there's no way I'd EVER drive 4 hrs there and 4 hrs back...You'd need a plane to go park hopping.

Or a high-speed Monorail (http://www.gamblingmagazine.com/articles/28/28-591.htm)...
Another Dimension 09-16-2005, 11:34 AM I can't imagine Disney building a theme park in Pahrump next to a house of ill repute. What is it going to be "Disney's Brothel Land" or "The Shady Lady featuring Cinderella"
Disney's Pahrump Adventure.
"Disney Theme Parks: Ever changing in, worldly forms, of entertainment!"
SarahShep 09-16-2005, 11:37 AM Or a high-speed Monorail (http://www.gamblingmagazine.com/articles/28/28-591.htm)...
LOL! that's crazy...but even 90 minutes is too long for me. I'll take 3-5 minutes (depeding upon how fast you walk) across the esplande, thankyouverymuch! :) That would cut into way too much park time.
mousey_girl 09-16-2005, 11:53 AM There have been rumors about Disney in LV for years...until they actually do something I won't hold my breath.
olegc 09-16-2005, 01:26 PM C'mon folks - Disney is not in the real-estate market just to build theme parks you know.. .They have a vacation-rental and time-share business that they have been promoting for years. Also - aren't they now getting into the vacation-adventure business. Not that I would know what adventures would be in suburban LV areas other than finding water. However, they have been starting to promote trips to locations in the US where there are NO disney theme parks or film/television studios.
Just another way to expand the empire...
Sandiegoboy 09-18-2005, 07:05 AM It will be a third gate, I read it in the newspaper.
Oh, and the peoplemover will connect all 3 gates.
Alex S. 09-18-2005, 09:08 AM As was said, the Kingdom of Nye is only 30 minutes from Las Vegas, but it is an isolated 30 minutes with no easy access that could accommodate Disney level traffic.
That said, if you took the main road out of Vegas to Pahrump (four lanes with many stop lights) you would go past the former home of former Disney World monorails (see the bottom of this MousePlanet article (http://www.mouseplanet.com/karl/ht040715kb.htm).
That part of Nevada essentially has three claims to fame for the average American:
1) Hookers (and blow)
2) Art Bell
3) Pahrump is where the aliens first landed in Mars Attacks! (as an tribute to #2).
So, I wouldn't expect anything since, a) most reports of Disney land purchases are false in the first place, and b) a theme park in this location would make absolutely no sense.
potzbie 09-22-2005, 04:11 PM WHERE would be a good location, where land is cheap?
How about South America? Central America?
Disney could place a resort in Brazil.
Sure -- "Go down for Carnival, but stay for the Mickey Mouse."
I was thinking of Australia, but those people can fly up to Honk Kong, close enough so as not to take business away from anything closer.
I was thinking of Mexico, but that is too close to California to justify the costs.
For Europeans, Paris is a fine location.
Is there enough interest in Things-Disney to sustain non-American Disney resorts?
In the U.S., where would be the preferred location?
To service Canadians, either central Canada or the U.S. Pacific Northwest might be nice.
My crystal ball told me Texas (north, not coastal) would draw from 6 or 7 states.
But I think Disney should capitalize on where the tourists already go.
That implies Branson, MO.--The second home of country music.
Right?
Alex S. 09-22-2005, 04:25 PM The real problem with further American parks is the preference to have year-round parks. A Disney-level park would be a huge capital expenditure in return for just seasonal income.
About the only other place that could provide that would be Gulf Coast Texas and that is just too far out of the way. Just about anywhere else gets too cold in winter,
Branson winds down quite a bit through the winter and has pretty severe winters. Through January the average low is under 40 and the average high barely tops 50 and a couple feet of snow will fall through the month. 5 months out of the year have average highs under 60 degrees.
Unless Disney decides to dabble in smaller regional parks, I really don't think there is a place for another major Disney theme park resort. For economic reasons it might make sense to move Disneyland elsewhere they could gain some concessions similar to WDW on oversight, space, and regional control (I don't think it would happen).
TowerofTerror 09-23-2005, 10:19 AM The park would be cool if they have one in las Vegas but think it wont happen anytime soon
