Rainforest Cafe at DTD seems to be popular with kids. I don't know whether or not they take reservations though. Without them, there is usually a lengthy wait.

can't decide on when to do Joe's crabshack,

May I ask how married you are to Joe's and why? I would personally prioritize anything Disney over Joe's.

RFC does take reservations. They have an 800# on their website for advance resies, or you can go there that day to make a same day resie. If you are planning on eating there on a weekend I would recommend calling them ahead of time.

ESPN Zone doesn't take reservations. They do have the arcade to kill time while you wait. This is verrrrry popluar with my Hubby and The Boy. I tend to sit at the upstairs bar and watch them.

Personally, we find that there are enough places in the park that dont require reservations, that we just leave ourselves open most nights. I hate to feel locked in to a time and place. We may make reservations for one night at Ariels or Goofys, but the rest of the time we just go with what feels right.

Not that married to it, went to Joes in Jacksonville Fl, in June, liked the place atmosphere etc. thought the kids would get a kick out of it...but that's about the only reason..

Your best bet might be making reservations for half the nights you stay. That way you are open to go and do what you would like. Some nights a little snack may just do the trick and some places you can walk in without a problem. In terms of where to eat.....some of out favs are Crystal Palace, Coral Reef, Nine Dragons, Le Cellier, and Mickey's. We usually make our reservations around 5 or so since it's a down time and that way around 6/7 when everyone is eating a lot of rides and what not will have shorter waits. I would stay clear of the crabshack, unless your kids are older. The prices are high and the food is not typical kid friendly food.

Don't know if your kids are boys or girls, but if girls, I highly recommend Ariel’s Grotto. The place is swimming in Princesses! We were there on Friday (my, wife, baby and our 3 y/o niece) and there were no less then 5 Princesses doing meet and greets throughout our meal (Ariel, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle and Snow White).

They all individually came to our table and chatted a bit with our niece (who was beside herself with joy) and posed for pics.

We had a late lunch (2p) and it was fairly slow so we may have been a bit luckier then someone eating on a busy day. The prices are reasonable ($20 for adult, $14 for kids--3 course meal and drinks). Ask for an outdoor table if weather is good...more room for the princesses to maneuver with less tables then inside, which makes their interaction more personable (IMO).

I don’t think too many people are aware of the new character format yet (all Princesses), but I would expect it to become extremely popular very soon.

I agree that if you want something special ie. a character meal or specific atmosphere blue bayou, napa rose, rainforest make the reservation and make the time to eat. Reservations are easier with kids because your know exactly when you will eat and where and avoid the lines which even I hate when I am hungry. But if you decide against reservations it just depends on where your at and what you want since so many things are available.
Our favorite "fast" places are Hungry Bear where you can sit and feed ducks along the river and watch the mark twain and canoes go by, tomorrowland terrace..um..club buzz where if your there at the right time you can listen to live music while you eat, and Rancho Del Zocalo yummy mexican food with seating watching big thunder railroad go by. I think all of those places are usually bustling with activity which helps when you have toddlers who want/NEED to get out of a stroller and stretch. Oh and croc's bits and bites at the DLH is awesome short lines and hot food.
